Organizational Context

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international


development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man
and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA
supports countries in using population data for policies and
programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is
wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS,
and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.

Duties and Responsibilities


The UNFPA Humanitarian Assistant will be bases in Nairobi and work
under the direct supervision of the Head of the Sub-office of south
central. The contractor will support the Head of Sub-office in office and
field operations and may be required to travel within Somalia and
south central regions, subject to approval by the United Nations
Security Coordinator.

The contractor will have responsibilities of liaising and maintaining


regular communication with partners in south / central Somalia.

The contractor will perform the following duties:

• Assist in preparing an inventory of humanitarian and relief


partners, including national and international NGOs in south /
central Somalia.

• Assist in establishing and maintaining baseline information on


health facilities, availability of emergency obstetric care, drugs
and medical supplies.

• Keep up to date records on UNFPA programme in south central


Somalia.

• In collaboration with humanitarian agencies and local authorities
assist in organizing GBV working groups in south central regions.

• Assist in mapping RH/GBV service facilities and help in


developing training plans in GBV prevention and response.

• Work closely and systematically with key humanitarian partners


and other relevant stakeholders to support coordination of
reproductive health programmes in south central regions.

• Participate in assessments of contractors and UNFPA partners.

• Participate on behalf of UNFPA in emergency and humanitarian


activities of UN sister agencies, OCHA, WFP, WHO, UNHCR and
UNICEF, among others.

 Perform other functions as may be requested by Programme


Specialist.

Qualifications and Experience Required
 Diploma in nursing, management/Administration, public health,
Gender or other related social science/ development studies,

 A minimum of three to five years of increasingly responsible


managerial experience in humanitarian and relief operations,

 Field prior experience in the UN system will be an asset,

 Experience in reproductive and sexual health, safe motherhood


with preferably some experience on gender and development
issues,

 Proficiency in English required; knowledge of Somali language is


a MUST,

 Initiative and sound judgment. Dedication to the United Nations


principles and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with
concerned partners,

 Sound ability for negotiations, communications and decision


making.
