Carson City Hospital receives quality improvement award
CARSON CITY – Carson City
Hospital has received the Michi-
gan Center for Rural Health’s
2010 Michigan Rural Health
Quality Improvement Award for
Quality Improvement Award -
Award of Excellence. The award
acknowledges quality improve-
ment efforts in inpatient clini-
cal performance in the care and
treatment of heart failure and
pneumonia, outpatient clini-
cal performance in the care and
treatment of chest pain and
acute myocardial infarction, and
customer service.
This is the second year the
Michigan Center for Rural Health
has offered this award. Carson
City Hospital applied evidence-
based medicine to improve care
processes in the treatment of
heart failure and pneumonia,
and overall customer service.
“Together our staff is dem-
onstrating we are providing
the very best in medical care,”
said Bruce L. Traverse, FACHE,
President and CEO of Carson
City Hospital. “Carson City Hos-
pital is committed to the tenets
of quality improvement that em-
brace evidence-based medicine
to improve health outcomes.”
Carson City Hospital’s mul-
tidisciplinary team embraced
evidence-based medicine in or-
der to review their current pro-
cesses and create interventions
that improved the treatment
of acute myocardial infarction,
chest pain, heart failure and
pneumonia, and overall cus-
tomer service. Clinical indicators
were based on the Appropriate
Care Measure (ACM), a compos-
ite score that captures whether
or not a patient received all the
care that he or she was eligible to
receive. The 2010 Michigan Ru-
ral Health Quality Improvement
Award – Quality Improvement
Achievement Award was based
on an ACM score of 95 to 100%.
“Award recipients are com-
mitted to providing their patients
with high quality health care,”
said John Barnas, Executive Di-
rector of the Michigan Center for
Rural Health. “(We are) pleased
to sponsor this award, which rec-
ognizes the dedication of hospi-
tal staff to provide the right care
to the right patient each and ev-
ery time.”
Barb Staines of the Qual-
ity Improvement Department at
Carson City Hospital attended an
awards ceremony during the 11th
Annual Michigan Critical Access
Hospital Conference October 28,
2010, in Boyne Falls, Michigan,
at which Carson City Hospital
was honored by The Michigan
Center for Rural Health.
‘Project Kidsight’ set for Dec. 11
Do you really know if your pre-school age child can
see well? Early detection and treatment of problems can
have far reaching impact on a child’s vision, learning,
and sometimes even their overall health.
To aid in detecting any major problems, the Sand
Lake Lions Club will be providing “Project Kidsight”
vision screening Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Kent District
Library-Sand Lake Branch, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. No
appointment is needed, but an adult representing the
family must be there during the screening and sign con-
sent.
The American Association for Pediatric Ophthal-
mology and other certifed experts say that the best time
for treatment of many eye problems is in the pre-school
years and that many problems will not improve if left
until 8 or 9 before detection.
“Project Kidsight” is a program of the Michigan Li-
ons Clubs in cooperation with Children’s Hospital of
Michigan. The objective of the program is to screen
young children to detect poor vision or risk factors,
and is done by Michigan Lion volunteers using a spe-
cial camera. This takes about 10 minutes. The photos
are then sent to professionals at Children’s Hospital for
evaluation, and if further testing is recommended, the
family is contacted directly. The Sand Lake Lions have
been told that at least one child from previous screen-
ings was among the children with problems requiring
treatment. To date, about 5 percent of those screened
state-wide have been referred for further testing.
There is no charge for this service project of the Li-
ons, but donations will be accepted. You may also bring
in used glasses or drop them in the eyeglass Collection
Box at the Sand Lake Independent Bank at any time.
Remember, 10 minutes could mean lifelong better
vision for your child.

free vision screening for 1-5 year olds

you very much for your hard work

done it without you. They would also
like to thank all of the community

ported them throughout the season,
whether through various donations
or equipment usage.
A special thank you to Evergreen

ment. A warm and very special

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way
to brighten up your home’s decor, consid-
er painting high-profle features such as
doors or cabinets. Fixing up these smaller
spaces can really make a big impact.
Here are a few tips from the experts at
Behr on how to proceed:
How to Paint an
Exterior Door: The
Door Frame
Step 1. Starting at the top door frame,
begin painting the inside of the frame.
Work outward from the edge of the door.
Step 2. Continue until the frame is
complete. Wipe away the excess paint.
The Door Trim
Step 1. Starting at the top corner of the
door trim, paint along the side edge of the
trim where it meets the wall. Continue un-
til all side edges of the trim are complete.
Step 2. Return to the top of the door
trim and paint the face of the trim.
Step 3. Continue until the door trim is
complete.
The Door
Step 1. Pour thoroughly mixed paint
into a bucket and dip a quality 2- to 21/2-
inch wide nylon/poly-ester brush into the
paint. When working outside, work out of
direct sunlight and in temperatures be-
tween 50ºF and 90ºF with moderate hu-
midity.
Step 2. With your brush, paint the in-
side and outside edges of the door.
Step 3. Starting with the top panel of
the door, paint into the recessed area of
the panel. Begin at a corner of the recess
and continue around its perimeter. Work
from top of the door to the bottom.
Step 4. Paint the remainder of the panel
until the entire panel is complete. Repeat
until all panels are complete. Wipe away
any excess paint. To eliminate unwanted
brushstrokes, smooth out the panel by tak-
ing a lighter stroke over the newly painted
area.
Step 5. When the panels are complete,
paint the stiles of the door in the follow-
ing order: middle, top, center, bottom, left,
right.
How to Paint a
Cabinet: The Stiles and
Openings
Step 1. Pour thoroughly mixed paint
into a bucket and dip a quality 2- to 21/2-
inch wide nylon/poly-ester brush into the
paint. When using more than one gallon of
paint, combine the colors for better color
uniformity. This intermixing is called box-
ing.
Step 2. With your brush, paint the in-
side edges of the cabinet door openings.
Step 3. Paint the middle stile from top
to bottom, following the wood grain. Then
paint remaining stiles in the following or-
der: top, bottom, left, right.
The Side Panels
Step 1. Using your brush, paint (cut in)
around the perimeter of the cabinet where
it meets the ceiling, walls, countertops and
foor.
Step 2. Pour paint into a paint tray.
Work the roller into the tray until it is fully
loaded with paint. For best results, use a
¼-inch roller cover.
The Paneled Doors
Step 1. Paint the edges around the pe-
rimeter of the door.
Step 2. With the door open, paint the
recess of the door panel. Start at a corner
of the recess and continue around its pe-
rimeter.
Step 3. After painting the entire panel,
wipe away the excess paint that has over-
lapped onto the door frame.
Step 4. Paint the door frame in the fol-
lowing order: top, bottom, left, right.
Step 5. Paint the backside of the door.
Leave the doors open until the paint is
completely dry.

In memory of our Mother
Velma (Dietz) Long
It has been 1 year December 13th
You were a precious gift from God above, so much beauty, grace and love.
You touched our hearts in so many ways, your smile so bright even on the bad days.
You heard God’s whisper calling you home, you didn’t want to go and leave us alone.
You loved us so much, you held on tight, till all the strength was gone and you could
no longer fight.
He had called your name twice before, you knew you couldn’t make him wait anymore.
So you gave your hand to God and slowly drifted away, knowing that with our love we
will be together again some day.

December 13, 2010
High school teacher, Colleen Simmons, was nominated for the
National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. The Veteran of Foreign
Wars (VFW) awards this honor. Colleen teaches sociology, psychology,
speech, and world history. She’s been teaching for 18 years, 13 of them
at TC Middle School.
Teachers nominated for this award are
those who promote civic responsibility, flag
etiquette and patriotism, those who organize
community volunteer projects, and help
students to develop a better understanding
of democratic values and beliefs.
Colleen has taken on many leadership
positions such as, administrator for Helping
Hands, Patriot’s Pen, and Toys for Tots. She
is a student council advisor, and this year
she is the advisor for the Bullying Program
at the high school. Colleen was selected as
a Target Teacher Award Winner in 1998.
Peggy Just, Howard City VFW
representative, nominated Colleen.
Peggy stated, “Her (Colleen’s) greatest
accomplishment is the life-enduring impact she leaves on every young
person who passes through one of the many classes she teaches. Indeed,
it is people like her who put pride in the American flag that hangs on
the wall of her classroom.”
Shannon Higgins joined MacNaughton Elementary in September.
She is the preschool program director and teacher. Shannon received
her bachelor’s degree at Central Michigan University and her master’s
degree at Oakland University. She taught kindergarten for five years
and middle school for one year in the northern Metro Detroit area.
“I had wonderful teachers who provided me with outstanding
educational experiences. My favorite teachers were able to get us
excited about learning. They allowed us to be active in our learning
and we had fun in the process. My teachers also fostered in me a love
of literacy. By frequently reading aloud to us, and planning memorable
reading activities, I grew to love books. Finally, my favorite teachers
also made me feel that I was truly cared
about as an individual. I understand how
important this is and I strive to provide
my students with a warm and caring
classroom environment where each student
feels valued. These wonderful experiences
growing up influenced my decision to
become a teacher,” said Shannon.
Shannon grew up near Clarkston, which
is located by the DTE Music Theater and
Palace of Auburn Hills. She moved to
Rockford in September. In her free time
she enjoys downhill skiing, attending
community events, reading, bike riding,
and hiking.
Last spring, the Board of Education considered a reconfiguration of
our elementary buildings. The question was: Would it work to change
Sand Lake into a Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade building for the entire
district, and change MacNaughton Elementary into a Kindergarten,
First, and Second grade building for the entire district, and then close
Edgerton Upper Elementary? The Board decided not to make any
changes for this current school year. A meeting has been scheduled for
community members to review this idea and to look at other ideas that
may be beneficial for our school district. This meeting is scheduled for
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the boardroom at the
Administration building in Sand Lake.
Kevin Harkness is a voice that is heard every day by the bus drivers.
He is the new dispatcher—the one that makes sure busses get out on
time, takes parent calls regarding
students not riding and communicates
this to the bus drivers. He joined the
staff in September and in addition
to dispatching, he has other duties
such as scheduling maintenance
and ordering parts for service. He
also trains sub bus drivers and gives
experienced drivers a refresher course
covering the new state laws.
Kevin lives in Howard City
with his wife, Jaime, and their three
children. Jaime is a fifth grade teacher
at Newaygo Public Schools. In Kevin’s
free time he coaches several sports
teams. He is an assistant coach for the
varsity football team in Newaygo.
MacNaughton third graders went back in Michigan history to a
time when only Native Americans lived here. Garth Butler, who had a
wealth of information and authentic artifacts to share, helped the third
graders in this journey. They learned how Native American children
were born and cared for by parents, the roles and chores of children,
and games they might have played. The lullaby “Rock A Bye Baby”
was written because the mothers hung their babies in cradleboards on
a branch while they worked outside. Children’s games replicated the
skills they’d need when they grew up, such as; arrow accuracy, running,
and being quiet. Thanks to the MacNaughton Boosters for funding this
amazing adventure.

Tri County School News

December 13, 2010
The Tri County Middle School Pom Team, coached by Kim Hayden, competed
in a major competition in Byron Center this weekend. They placed third in
Contemporary Dance and third in Jazz. The biggest honor was the last and most
prestigious award handed out, called the Tracy Weber Unity Award. TCMS Poms
won it for their teamwork, character, and skill.
This award was given the most attention of all awards, and the T.C. girls were
picked over such teams as Rockford Varsity, East Kentwood Varsity, and Jenison
Varsity. These kids and their coach, should be congratulated for representing Tri
County in such a positive way.
The Byron Center A.D. also called the team up before the competition began,
to offer condolences to them and our community for the loss of our former
principal, and teacher. The entire assembly (about 900 spectators) bowed their
heads for a moment of silence in honor and memory of Mark and Randy.
Mark your calendars. There will be a Senior All Nighter meeting on
Sunday, Dec 19 at 7:00 p.m. at Mattson’s Hardware. Plan to attend and hear
what great things are happening. It’s never too late to join in the fun.

1. Keep the money in your neighborhood.
For every $100 spent in locally owned businesses, $45 goes
back into the community.
2. Embrace what makes the area a cohesive group.
The “Big Box” stores are becoming more aggressive and
changing the character of our community. Local
businesses are “REAL”.
3. Get better service from your neighbors.
Local businesses often have a better understanding of their
products and community needs.
4. Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy.
Local businesses understand more what their customers need
and want.
5. Create more local jobs.
Small, local businesses are one of the nation’s largest
employers.
6. Help out the environment.
Less transportation cost and use of gasoline and diesel.
7. Support community groups and organizations.
Nonprofits receive an average of 350% more support from
local businesses than non-locally owned.
8. Invest in the community.
Local businesses are far more invested in our future.
9. Put your taxes to good use.
Local businesses need less infrastructure and make more
efficient use of public services.
10. Show the world we believe in our local area.
People are more likely to invest in or move to communities
that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and unique
attitude.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as
“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.
We at Hill’s Body Shop have noticed an increase in deer hits in the month of October through December
and a big surge directly after the time change, because more people are still on the road at sunset.
If you have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, Hill’s Body Shop, Inc. is here to help restore your ve-
hicle to its pre-accident condition. Your insurance company may refer you to one of their “preferred”
repair facilities. These body shops have an agreement with your insurance company to keep down the
cost of your vehicle repair in exchange for referrals. We believe it’s not in your best interest to take
your vehicle to these contracted repair shops. We believe safety and quality should come before cost,
whereas these “preferred” shops seem to put cost before quality and safety. We believe it to be unethical
to cheapen your vehicle repair to save your insurance company money. You’re our customer, not your
insurance company’s. Hill’s Body Shop, Inc. has always and will always provide the finest repairs avail-
able regardless of DRP contracts.
For more information about what you can do to avoid a car-deer accident and what to do if you do have
a car-deer accident, please visit our website http://www.hillsbodyshop.com/

Winter Itch
About this time of year a lot of people are miserable, not with the winter blues, or cabin fever, but with
Winter Itch. This is a condition of dry, itchy skin, usually with some small red bumps, sometimes little pustules.
Usually this is found on the upper arms, mid and upper back, chest and upper abdomen, and sometime on
the legs.
Most of the time, it is related to a reduction of skin moisture and skin oil. It may also be aggravated by over
heating parts of the body by heavy clothing.
The solutions are fairly simple.
Run a humidifier in your home, especially in sleeping areas. Humidity should be between 45 and 65. There
should be a little condensation on the bottoms of the window panes. Not too much; that might ruin the
frames.
Drink adequate water (chlorine free). Most adults should have between 40-60 ounces per day. Coffee and
soda pop are not considered water. In fact, they are dehydrating and contribute to the problem.
Reduce the temperature of your bath or shower. Hot water removes some of the skin oils which are
needed to lubricate the skin. Also only soap and scrub the important areas of your body: hair, armpits,
bottom, and privates. Scrubbing the rest of the body removes much needed skin oils.
Add oil to your diet. For adults, two tablespoons of olive oil every day is helpful (can
be mixed in food) and Omega 3 (fish or flaxseed oil) 2000-4000 mg per day with food
in two or three doses are highly beneficial for skin, hair, joints, and arteries.
In stubborn cases, Vitamin E may be added. Natural Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) 400-
800 units per day is good. Be careful with synthetic Vitamin E (l or dl-alpha tocopherol)
as it may add to the inflammation in your blood vessels.
Finally, in un-sunny Michigan, Vitamin D3 may be a good thing. It is not necessarily
needed to control the winter itch, but it is great for helping some other winter health
problems we experience. But, you can read more on that next week.

This little guy is in need
of a loving home. He is
a 2-3 year old tri colored
chihuahua. He gets along
great with other dogs
and loves everybody he
meets! He is just a little
guy, so for his own safety
he will need a family that
does not have toddlers.
He will be available for
adoption as of 12/3/10!
Stop in today and meet
him and even take him
out for a nice walk.
Many other dogs are
available to be adopted,
and plenty of cats too.
Go online to
www.petfinder.com/shelters/montcalm.html
for a full list of adoptable animals. Adoption hours are from 12:45
- 4:45 Mon.-Fri. Adoption fees for all dogs and puppies is $90.00.
That $90.00 includes: $10 for vaccinations (all EXCEPT rabies) and de-
wormer, $10 for license fees, $20 adoption fee, and a $50 refundable
spay/neuter deposit. When the animal has been spayed/neutered by a
required date the $50.00 deposit is refunded to you and the $10.00
license deposit is returned to you in the form of a dog license. Adop-
tion fees for all cats and kittens are $40.00, which includes: $5 for
de-wormer and vaccinations, $10 adoption fee, and a $25 refund-
able spay/neuter deposit. Once the animal is fixed by the set date, the
adopter is reimbursed the spay/neuter deposit.
