Corus Engineering Steels

42CrMo4‘IM’ / 42CrMoS4‘IM’

An improved machining, inclusion modified medium carbon alloy

through hardening steel.
Features Benefits
• Calcium treated steel for Inclusion modification The modified inclusions are less abrasive to cutting
tools, acting as a lubricant and barrier at the tool /
• Contains soft, deformable calcium aluminates workpiece interface.
encapsulated in manganese sulphide rather than
hard alumina oxide inclusions Compared with the standard grade the IM steel gives:
• Improved machinability with reduced machining cost
• Controlled analysis for consistent response to heat
treatment, repeatable strength and fatigue properties • Up to 30% longer tool life for a given cutting speed

• Grain size 5 or finer • Up to 20% higher cutting speeds for a given tool life

Guaranteed Machinability use of IM steels.
42CrMoS4 IM steel, in the hardened and tempered
condition with a tensile strength of 900N/mm2 minimum,
will give a V15 test speed > 150m/min using P10
uncoated carbide tools to ISO3685 condition “C”.
