CASE STUDY
A DAY IN THE LIFE
Summary of the Case Study:-
 This case shows the daily working life of Rachel, the project
manager of a large information systems project to mainly
discuss whether she allocates her time appropriately or not.
 Early morning she gets pre-time to her office scheduled timings,
so that she can make the optimum utilisation of her time.
 She is always trying hard to stay ahead of all of her co-workers
& competitors, ofcourse.
 She is a manager who is well known to her responsibilities,
duties & tasks assigned to her. Additionally, we also find her to
be socializing & one who is interested in the internal politics of
the organisation.
 She also handles her clients very appropriately.
 Throughout the case, we find her to be very pre-occupied with
lots of calls, e-mails, messages, etc.
Question 1
How effectively do you think Rachel spent her day?
Ans-
 Review project reports and prepare for the weekly status
meeting - 25 min.
 Discus the project with her superior - 20 min
 Participate in the progress review meeting - 45 min
 Identify and respond to the issues arise in the project - 20 min
 Socializing and catching up with personal news - 10 min
 Reviewing the days schedule - 15 min
 Updating boss on key events of the day
Due to everyone has different aspects in judging how effectively one
can handle everything, but from my point of view, if a manager, like
Rachel, who can spend his or her time on project work beyond 65%,
then I’d probably consider him or her as an effective project manager.
So, therefore, in this case Rachel is no doubt to be positive asset to
her company for sure.
Question 2:
What does the case tell you about what it is like to be a project
manager?
Ans-
 Outlining specific goal for team mates.
 Coordinate her boss and updates everything to her boss.
 Great relationship with other managers, team manager and
individuals.
 Identifying, tracking, managing and resolving project issues.
 Integrating diversifying workers from different departments
 Being an optimistic cheerleader and powerful coordinator
between each department
 Maintain great integration with other managers when solves an
issue.
 Take full responsibility that project is completely successful
within time and budget.
 Discussion with the team members whenever got an issue and
get their idea too.
 Keeping project status meetings, small discussions to coordinate
and integrate.
 Improving the project’s success rates with better leadership.
 Frequently interact with her project team identifies the issues and
response to those effectively.
 Managing the overall schedule to ensure work is assigned and
completed on time and within budget.
Conclusion:
 Even though Rachel spend 70% of a daily working time on
dealing with projects work, like directly, it doesn't mean that she
did effectively in the project itself.
 In other words, she can still save time by taking care of her
client firm issue thoroughly and cautiously.
 Moreover, than that, if she were powerful enough, she should
have handled this project more effectively.
 As a project manager she has power in her hand, and she also
has to use it very carefully otherwise as project team dismissed
it the future, then she would face a big problem in terms of
working with her fellow workers.
