*What is the significance and meaning of Sri Suktam*?

The word Veda means knowledge, and the Vedas are

considered the most sacred scripture of Hinduism referred to
as sruti, meaning what was heard by or revealed to the Rishis
or Seers. The most holy hymns and mantras put together into
four collections called the Rig, Sama, Yajur, and Atharva
Vedas.

Rigveda is a Veda in form of *Sukti's, which mean 'beautiful

statements'*.

Shree Sukta is one of the `Khila' Suktas of Rig Veda. `Khila'

means an appendix. This part does not belong to the main
part of the Rig Veda, but appears to have been included at a
later time.

A collection of very beautifully composed incantations itself is

a Sukta.. *Suktas are chanted in Vedic hymns* (songs). They
are in praise of different forms of the God/Goddess, which are
known as “SUKTAMS”. Sri Suktam is one of the pancha
suktas such as Purusha Suktam,Narayana Suktam,Sri
Suktam,Bhu Suktam and Nila Suktam. Sukta means a
collection of Vedic mantras. A collection of Suktas is called a
Mandala.

Shree Sukta is found at the end of the fifth mandala and

before the commencement of the sixth mandala of rig Veda.
This mandala is also called Atreya mandala. *Because this
Sukta comprises of fifteen Rig mantras, it is called `
Panchadasharcha'*. During Parayana, additional verses are
also added, though these are not considered to be a part of
the Shree Sukta. Shree Sukta is very popular because it is
used in the worship of Sri Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth
and prosperity. However it does not address Lakshmi as
merely the goddess of wealth and as the consort of Sri
Narayana. It is a prayer to the divine mother of the cosmos.
She is seen as the very power behind the sun and the moon.
She is also identified with Agni or fire. Other gods like Shiva
and Vishnu depend on this cosmic Shakti or power for all their
doings. *She is `Narayani', the power of Sri Narayana, but at
the same time she is also `Tryambake', the consort of the
three-eyed Lord, Sri Mahadeva*.

For the adoration of Lakshmi, there is no hymn equal to the

Sri Sukta...The letters, syllables and words in the fifteen
verses of Sri Sukta, collectively form the sound body of
Lakshmi, the presiding deity of this Hymn. As it has come to
us from the consciousness state of the Rishi (seer), the
substance is Chit, the creative energy in Vaikhari or gross
from of sound.

Sri Sukta is a Siddha Mantra and is a radiant mass of energy.

By proper Sadhana, the jiva can raise itself to a divine status.
But to attain this, it is very vital that the meaning of the
