Professor Chris Brink, PhD, DPhil Vice-Chancellor Executive Office Newcastle University King’s Gate Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 7RU United Kingdom

Dear Colleague

I am writing to invite you to take part in the third Newcastle University Employee Opinion Survey. Our last survey took place in 2007 and it proved invaluable in providing us with a clear picture of your views. The survey has been designed to help the University gain a better understanding of the range of issues that contribute to your level of satisfaction with your working life. The responses that you give will help us to identify areas where improvements are needed. The 2010 survey has been designed with the assistance of Capita Survey and Research Unit, part of Capita Business Services Ltd — a leading research consultancy with vast experience within the public sector and, more specifically, Higher Education environments. Questionnaires should be completed anonymously and returned direct to Capita. This is the case both for those of you that complete the questionnaire online and those who request a paper copy. No one from the University will see individual responses. The results will be presented in a cumulative form in which no one's individual answers can be identified. The survey is conducted in accordance with the Data Protection Act and it is, therefore, the duty of Capita Survey and Research Unit to ensure that you cannot be identified in any reports they produce. Upon completion of the project, you will receive the results of the survey for the University as a whole and for an area more local to you, that is, your school, institute or service section. Of course, none of this would be of any value if we do not take action based on the results. In 2007, whilst the overall picture was very positive, we did take note of your concerns over areas such as communications, workload planning and helping staff to cope with change. A number of local action plans were drawn up as a result and I hope our results this time will show that we are making some progress. You can find out more about the action taken as a result of the 2007 survey on the Employee Opinion website http://www.ncl.ac.uk/hr/eos/. This website will also give you more information about the 2010 survey process and keep you informed of the project’s progress. In 2007, 48 per cent of employees responded to the survey, and, although this was a good response, the success of the survey depends on as many of us as possible completing and returning the questionnaire. I would strongly encourage you all to take this opportunity to contribute your views. With thanks and best regards.
