Watercolor
A History
By Marie-Pierre Salé

The most comprehensive and best-illustrated history of

watercolor painting ever published

The term watercolor calls to mind atmosphere, luminosity,

and immediacy—qualities that derive directly from the quick-
drying, translucent nature of water-based pigments.
In Watercolor: A History, Louvre curator Marie-Pierre Salé
provides an authoritative and beautifully illustrated account
of this versatile and widely beloved artistic medium.
Salé’s incisive text traces the development of watercolor
from the thirteenth to the twentieth century in Europe and
the United States, encompassing every type of work—from
plein-air sketches to finished studio pieces—and a wide
variety of artists. Here are Dürer’s detailed animal studies,
Turner’s landscapes, Cézanne’s tireless explorations, Sargent’s
light-dappled sketches, O’Keeffe’s pioneering abstractions.
This handsome volume features more than three hundred
full-color illustrations, specially printed on Munken paper to
capture the vibrancy and texture of the original works. It is
sure to be welcomed by art historians and art lovers alike.

Marie-Pierre Salé is curator of nineteenth-century French

drawings at the Musée du Louvre and the author of several

Saints in Art and History
By Fernando Lanzi and Gioia Lanzi

A book of saints at once beautiful and profound

Saints in Art and History presents the lives of some 150 saints

in chronological order, from the family of Jesus and the early
Christian martyrs to the founders of the great religious orders,
to modern holy figures like Mother Teresa. This arrangement
reveals the tremendous impact that the saints have had
on the history of the Catholic faith, and on world history.
The lives of the saints are illustrated not only with works of
great art—by Memling, Raphael, and Bernini, among many
others—but also by popular images, such as folk carvings and
votive postcards.
A thoughtful introduction explores the nature of saint-
hood, the role of saints in Catholicism, and the significance of
their images. Other special features include a visual diction-
ary of the saints’ attributes, and a map showing the patron
saints of the nations of the world.
This attractive volume is at once a valuable resource for art
historians and other scholars, and a splendid gift for Easter or
any occasion.

Life and Culture in Northeast India
By Dipti Bhalla Verma and Shiv Kunal Verma

An abundantly illustrated journey through one of the

world’s most diverse and fascinating regions

Although India’s northeastern administrative region makes up

only 8 percent of the country’s land mass, it is home to some
140 indigenous tribes, each with its own unique culture. The
terrain, predominantly hilly, ranges from snow-capped peaks
to tropical rainforests. Now, for the first time, noted authors
and filmmakers Dipti Bhalla Verma and Shiv Kunal Verma
provide a comprehensive introduction to this little-known yet
captivating part of the world.
Verma and Verma conduct us from the towering
Kanchenjunga massif in Sikkim to the tea plantations of
Assam, to the astonishing biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh,
to the martial tribes and Baptist churches of Nagaland, to
the birthplace of polo in Manipur, to the living root bridges
of Meghalaya, to the farms nestled among the hills of Tripura
and Mizoram. They take us into the lives of the many peoples
of these eight states, who maintain their traditional customs
and beliefs even in the face of growing ecological threats.
Featuring more than three hundred color photographs and
several detailed maps, Life and Culture in Northeast India will
be an essential volume for anyone interested in the peoples
and places of Planet Earth.

Larry Poons
Introduction by Michael Fried
Text by David Anfam, David Ebony,
Barbara Rose, and Karen Wilkin

The first book-length monograph on one of the greatest

living American painters

Larry Poons (b. 1937) shot to fame while still in his twenties,
on the strength of his “dot paintings,” in which dots or ellipses
were meticulously arranged on brightly colored fields, creating
a rhythmic, pulsating effect. But within a few years, Poons
abandoned the hard-edged precision of the dot paintings for
an organic mode of abstraction based on vertical drips of flung
paint. This marked the beginning of an uncompromising five-
decade evolution that has finally led the artist back to a more
intimate mode of painting with brushes—and his own hands.
At every stage, Poons’s career has compelled the attention of
critics and, in particular, other artists.
This handsome volume, the first full-length monograph
on Poons, reproduces more than 140 of his most important
paintings in full color, some as spectacular gatefolds. The
insightful text—a collaboration between four leading critics
and historians—traces the development of his work. Larry
Poons is a necessary addition to the library of anyone with an
interest in American art.

Academy of Arts, London, 2016–17), the largest exhibition
of its kind ever held in Europe. David Ebony, a contributing

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
and Huckleberry Finn
By Mark Twain
Illustrated by Norman Rockwell

A great American novelist, illustrated by a great

American artist—now available in a collectible two-
volume set

In 1936, the Heritage Press, a publisher of fine editions,

commissioned Norman Rockwell to illustrate Mark Twain’s
Adventures of Tom Sawyer; four years later, they asked him
to illustrate The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as well. For
each book, Rockwell created eight full-color paintings and
numerous pen-and-ink drawings, the product of extensive
on-the-ground research in Twain’s hometown of Hannibal,
Missouri. Famously, Rockwell even tried to buy some of
Hannibal residents’ old clothes to dress his models in.
For years, the Rockwell editions of Tom Sawyer and
Huckleberry Finn have been unavailable in stores. Now
Abbeville Press is proud to reissue them as a handsome
new clothbound set. The color plates are reproduced
from new photography of Rockwell’s original paintings, the
typesetting has been done anew to a high standard, and
new introductions—illustrated with Rockwell’s rarely seen
preliminary sketches—examine this unique encounter
between two legendary chroniclers of America.

Revised Edition
Passion by Design
The Art and Times of Tamara de Lempicka
By Baroness Kizette de Lempicka-Foxhall

An attractive new hardcover edition of the classic

biography of Tamara de Lempicka, whose paintings
defined Art Deco and whose life epitomized the Jazz Age

As F. Scott Fitzgerald portrayed the mad glories of the 1920s

on the printed page, Tamara de Lempicka (1898–1980)
captured them on canvas. A seductive Garbo-esque beauty
with an irresistible force of personality, this refugee of the
Russian Revolution successively conquered Paris, Hollywood,
and New York with coruscating portraits of the world’s rich
and famous. Her Art Deco paintings earned for her a life more
fabulously excessive than anything Fitzgerald dreamed of.
Passion by Design offers an intimate look at a fascinating
personality—these are Tamara’s own stories, just as she
related them in person to rapt audiences. They were
compiled and edited shortly after her death by her daughter
Kizette, who added valuable historical context. This new
edition is illustrated with vibrant color reproductions of
her finest paintings, as well as exclusive photographs from
family albums. An additional chapter by Victoria and
Marisa de Lempicka, the artist’s granddaughter and great-
granddaughter, explores the ever-evolving legacy of Tamara
de Lempicka, from the record eight-figure price fetched by
her painting La Tunique rose in November 2019 to the new

Uncorked
A Corkscrew Collection
By Marilynn Gelfman Karp and Jeremy Franklin Brooke

A splendid (and giftable) visual guide to the beautifully

convoluted world of corkscrews

Ever since the standardized wine bottle came into use in the
eighteenth century, thirsty people have sought a convenient
means of removing its cork stopper. At first they employed
whatever was at hand—including teeth, forks, awls, and the
helical screws used to clean guns—but the purpose-built
corkscrew soon came to market and multiplied into more
permutations than the proverbial better mousetrap.
In Uncorked, Marilynn Gelfman Karp uses her own collection
of corkscrews—carefully chosen both for their inventiveness
and for their aesthetic qualities—to trace the history and
evolution of this curious tool. She establishes a taxonomy of
the corkscrew and then presents, by category, more than 650
individual specimens dating from the eighteenth century to
the present. They range from the simplest “basic T” models
to the most whimsical flights of fancy (a folding pair of legs in
striped tights, a bullet, a concertina) and the most complex
mechanical contrivances. Each example is illustrated with
superb color photography and fully described.
Uncorked is at once a serious contribution to the history
of material culture, and a delight to leaf through. It will be an
essential reference for helixophiles (as corkscrew collectors

Deep Affinities
Art and Science
By Philip F. Palmedo

An illustrated exploration of the fundamental

connections between art and science, from an author
who has lived in both worlds

In this thought-provoking book, Philip F. Palmedo, a former

physicist who now writes on art, reveals how the two defining
enterprises of humankind—art and science—are rooted in
certain common instincts, which we might call aesthetic: an
appreciation of symmetry, balance, and rhythm; the drive to
simplify and abstract natural forms, and to represent them
symbolically.
Palmedo traces these instincts back to a very early time
in human history—demonstrating, for example, the level of
abstract thinking required to create the stone tools and cave
paintings of the Paleolithic—and then forward, to the builders
of the Gothic cathedrals, to Leonardo da Vinci and Isaac
Newton, to Einstein and Picasso.
Illustrated with more than 125 creations of the genus
Homo—from a flint hand ax chipped half a million years ago
to the abstractions of Hilma af Klint and the James Webb
Space Telescope—Palmedo’s text leaves us with a new
appreciation of the instinct for beauty shared by artists and
scientists alike.

Posh Portals
Elegant Entrances and Ingratiating Ingresses to
Apartments for the Affluent in New York City
By Andrew Alpern
Photographs by Kenneth Grant
Watercolor drawings by Simon Fieldhouse

An illustrated tour of the elegant entrances to New York

City’s most celebrated apartment houses

This handsome, oversized book introduces us to the grand-

est entrances of New York City’s residential buildings.
These posh portals come in an array of forms and styles,
such as the porte cochère, with a passage to admit carriages
or motorcars; the classic awning, originally meant to be
retracted in good weather; and Neoclassical, Romanesque,
and Gothic revivals.
Architectural historian Andrew Alpern highlights
approximately 140 entrances from the nineteenth century
to the present, including those of the Dakota, the first true
luxury apartment house in New York; the San Remo, one
of Central Park West’s most impressive apartment houses;
and the Ansonia, at one time the largest hotel in the world.
Each entrance is accompanied by a description of its signal
features and a history of the building that surrounds it. All
are represented in splendid color photographs, and many by
charming watercolor drawings.
These ornate entrances offer a glimpse into New York’s
past, as well as its future—for today, once again, entryways

A new masterpiece of social history, uncovering the

interconnected lives of those who signed a young girl's
autograph album 130 years ago

Like many middle-class Boston girls of the late nineteenth

century, Annie McFarlane kept an autograph album, in which
her schoolmates, family, and neighbors wrote messages of
friendship and scraps of sentimental verse. This keepsake,
with its stamped and colored binding, was passed down
through McFarlane’s family to her great-grandson, the
independent scholar Theodore Dawes. Fascinated by the
faded inscriptions in so many varied hands—from the spiky
script of Andrew McFarlane (“Father”) to the labored cursive
of young Flossie L. Law—Dawes undertook an arduous course
of archival research aimed at uncovering the identity and
biographical details of everyone who signed the album.
The result is this book, in which each page of Annie

Brief Stories
By Philip Sultz

A critically acclaimed collection of very short stories

about a group of young men in postwar Buffalo, New

“I liked Sultz’s work from the start. It’s energetic, original, real, natural.

—Stephen Dixon, two-time National Book Award finalist
“My heart split open as I read these stories, remembering the
similar tales told by my husband’s family about Jewish Buffalo
in the 40s and 50s. These brief narratives elicit strong responses.”
—Lucy Kogler, Literary Hub
“Brief indeed, are these stories—a page, mostly. . . . Sultz is, by
trade, an artist who has written portraits of Buffalo people from
a generation whose full delightful particularities are unexpected
and compelling.”
—Jeff Simon, The Buffalo News
“Philip Sultz is a natural. By zeroing in on a moment, a conversation,
an incident, or an encounter, Sultz has composed a series of literary
snapshots of times past. . . . As we take in more and more of Sultz’s

Messi and Ronaldo
Who Is the Greatest?
By Illugi Jökulsson

A head-to-head comparison of the two greatest soccer

stars of their generation—and perhaps of all time

One, diminutive and reserved; the other, tall and theatrical.

One with six Ballons d’Or, and the other with five. There’s no
doubt about it—Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the
best. But which one is better?
This lively book compares every aspect of the legendary
rivals’ careers, to let the reader decide. It presents their stats,
including their ten years of matchups in El Clásico, their
club trophies, and their individual awards and milestones. It
analyzes their style of play, and how it has evolved throughout
their careers. And, it looks at how their rivalry continues
off the field, in terms of endorsement deals, social media
followings, and philanthropic endeavors.
Packed with color photos of the champions in action,
Messi and Ronaldo will spark discussion among both players’
partisans.

A History of Fantasy Illustration of the
exhibition
Edited by Jesse Kowalski

The first-ever history of fantasy illustration

For hundreds of years, artists have been inspired by the

imaginative potential of fantasy. Unlike science fiction, which
is based on fact, fantasy presents an impossible reality—a
universe where dragons breathe fire, angels battle demons,
and magicians weave spells. Published to coincide with a major
exhibition organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum, this
handsome volume reveals how artists have brought to life
mythology, fables, and fairy tales, as well as modern epics like
The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones.
Enchanted traces the development of fantasy illustration
from nineteenth-century pioneers like John Tenniel and
Gustave Doré, to Golden Age illustrators like Howard Pyle
and N. C. Wyeth, to classic cover artists like Frank Frazetta
and Boris Vallejo, to emerging talents like Anna Dittmann and
Heather Edwards. More than 150 key works are reproduced
in vibrant color, many at full-page size. Additional essays by

A Force for the Future
Inside NRDC’s Fight to Save the Planet and Its People
By John H. Adams

An illustrated celebration of NRDC’s fifty-year battle to

safeguard the planet, from the Clean Air Act to the Clean
Power Plan

In January 1970, a handful of young attorneys gathered in

borrowed office space in New York City to start a new kind of
law firm. Their client? Planet Earth. Their target? Polluters. Over
the past five decades, the Natural Resources Defense Council
has grown into one of the nation’s leading environmental
advocacy organizations, with seven offices worldwide; a staff
of 600 lawyers, scientists, and policy experts; and an activist
network of more than three million members.
In this abundantly illustrated volume, cofounder John
Adams takes us inside some of NRDC’s most challenging
cases, describing how NRDC uses sound science to tell the
public the truth about local environments, public health, and
the climate crisis. He explains how NRDC helps craft effective
environmental protections at every level of government and
how it uses the courts to hold polluters accountable.
This book is not just a valuable record of all that NRDC has
done. It also provides a forward-facing glimpse into how an
organization evolves and takes charge in creating a new vision
for the future of the planet and its people.

Santorini
Portrait of a Vanished Era
By Robert A. McCabe and Margarita Pournara

Beautiful black-and-white photographs of Santorini taken

between 1954 and 1964—depicting idyllic landscapes and
traditional island culture

Today Santorini is visited by some 2.5 million people every

year. They are drawn by the spectacular beauty of this island,
whose ringed inner coast, with its sheer cliffs, was formed by the
collapse of an immense volcano. Though tourism is Santorini’s
main industry now, for centuries the island was home to a
distinctive farming and seafaring culture that had mastered the
art of survival under the most adverse conditions.
This bygone culture—and the rugged landscape that sus-
tained it—comes back to life in the photographs that Robert
A. McCabe took on Santorini in the 1950s and ’60s. His images
record a donkey ride up the steep path to the main settlement
of Fira; the cherry tomato harvest; a village baptism; to the
archaeological site of Ancient Thera; and many other scenes of
island life. They also document the beginning of Santorini’s rede-
velopment after the devastating earthquake of 1956. McCabe’s
photographs are complemented by Margarita Pournara’s essays
on the folk culture, geology, and wines of the island.
This handsome volume—a companion to McCabe’s recent
book on Mykonos—is a vital celebration of Santorini’s heritage,
and a fascinating souvenir for present-day visitors to the island.

Unlike most professional soccer players, Alex Morgan did not

start playing club soccer until she was fourteen. But her talent
was so obvious that only three years later she was called up to
the U.S. women’s under-20 team. That was just the beginning
of a history-making career that led her, most recently, to a
second World Cup title as co-captain of the U.S. women’s
team. This new edition of Alex Morgan—revised and updated
