Activity No 2 Case In Point: Doing Good As A Core Business

Strategy

How might the implications of the P-O-L-C framework differ for an organization like

Goodwill Industries versus a firm like Starbucks?

The differences are that Goodwill is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to

get money to achieve its social objectives and Starbucks is a company that seeks to increase

its capital, for its own enrichment. Given that the purposes are different, the emphasis on

the P-O-L-C model is also different.

It can be inferred that leadership is the greatest management theory within the

Goodwill organization, since the projects that they have carried out with people they

commonly reject, need people who can guide and organize to fulfill their objectives.

Control on the other hand, is the greatest management theory in Starbucks, this is

evidenced in the words spoken by the creator Howard Schultz “Starbucks remain

steadfastly opposed to franchising, so that the company could control the quality of its

products and build a culture common to all stores”

What managerial roles are likely to be of the most value to individual Goodwill stores?

Within the 10 managerial roles, those of greater value for individual stores are those

roles that are within the interpersonal category (figurehead, leader and liaison), since it is

necessary to provide information to senior management, be a good leader and coordinate to

the employees. In this way, individual stores maintain the ideology with which they were

created.

Goodwill has found success in the social services. What problems might result from

hiring and training the diverse populations that Goodwill is involved with?
Having a diversity of personnel can generate a problem when training, since two

people with different shortcomings should not be trained, and this could incur a greater

expenditure of money.

Disabled people need adequate facilities to move around, and it is difficult to get a

company that wants to hire it. In addition, they may be more susceptible to getting sick, that

is, greater absence at work.

In general, Goodwill faces an easy-going society that is looking for experienced

employees who are in good health and accepted by the community, so their main problem

will be to train them enough for a company to prefer one of them, instead of a person who

meets all the requirements and is not part of the Goodwill organization.

What kinds of stakeholders does Goodwill need to manage that are different from for-

profit organizations?

Goodwill needs to manage with companies that are committed to the environment

and to the inclusion of diverse people. So with those who seek social equality and an

evolution of community thinking.

Why do you think Goodwill believes it necessary to continually innovate?

Because it allows them to stay current over the years. Since over time the way of

working, buying and even getting a job, changes, and if it does not adapt to these

transformations it can disappear. A clear example of this is the Forever 21 clothing brand,

which despite having many physical stores and creating low-cost fashion clothes, declared

itself in broken banking as its profitability decreased. This is because of their low presence

in the world of influencers and their unsustainable garments, which do not capture the

essence of the Z generation.

Case In Point: Hanna Andersson Corporation

Changes For Good

How has Hanna Andersson applied values-based leadership in terms of the

company’s choices related to P-O-L-C?

Planning: Hannna Anderson has created a successful plan that allowed her small

store to grow and have more than 100 million annual sales. Within his plan, he sought to

keep his clients satisfied and his employers happy, giving them flexible schedules and

supplementary child care reimbursement.

Organization: There is evidence of a good organization to keep such a company

afloat, since starting with a microenterprise from home sales to one of 29 retail stores

worldwide demonstrates that more than 400 employees had to be organized to Same

purpose.

Leadership: Leadership is one of Hanna Andersson's greatest qualities as there must

be a good guide that inspires employees to reach the levels it has reached. Although they

changed leaders, due to changes in marketing and revenue from new technologies, the

company has always been successfully taken.

Control: Hanna Anderson maintains control in all the situations that have been

presented to her, also performs charitable work that helps her save taxes and maintains a

good image before the public.

How did company leaders like Iosca, Petersen, and Stone help facilitate change

within the company? Did they remain consistent with the values of the founders?

These new leaders were contacted as a result of the changes the company faced

from selling online to expanding in retail stores, since the original owners did not feel able
to face the new transformations. Iosca opened retail stores around the world and established

online sales and Stone devised continuous changes that were not so overwhelming for the

company and its valuable employees. The values were maintained as these leaders were just

as committed as the initial owners, for example, Stone participated in inventory and

operational planning meetings to get to know the company in depth.

What were the reasons for organizational change within Hanna Andersson, both

internally and externally?

The continuing need to be at the forefront, the emergence of new stores, the

emergence of new forms of marketing and the need to expand.

What trends are likely to impact Hanna Andersson as they evolve over time?

One of the trends is advertising sales with content creators. At present it is not

enough to appear on social networks and have a website to be at the forefront, now you

must have a person who is very popular in social networks that makes the public believe

that it is a necessity to have a product from a certain company. This is how in 2020 a

company is sold and made successful.
