SYNOPSIS
The conventional method to verify an installed pile is to carry out a Maintained Load Test (MLT). A careful analysis of the test
results would indicate whether the tested pile managed to meet the respective criteria of Capacity, Settlement and Integrity.
Where there is a site constraint and MLT is not able to be carried out, High Strain Dynamic Load Test (PDA) may be used as
a replacement or if a Sustained/Maintained load still required, a Bidirectional Static Load Test (BDSLT) may be used to replace
the conventional Maintained Load Test. Advantages and disadvantages of bidirectional test is discussed.

In a preliminary pile test using MLT method, it is normal to instrument the pile using Vibrating Wire Strain Gauges (VWSG)
and also extensometer to obtain information on the distribution of the skin friction along the shaft and also the contribution of
the end bearing. This is to verify the skin friction and end bearing obtained from the instrumented load testing is what the
design engineer has assumed. Should the shaft friction and end bearing from the tested results be better than assumed,
further cost savings may also apply to the working piles by having shorter penetration working piles. A novel way of testing
using Distributed Fibre Optics Strain Sensing to replace VWSG and extensometer is introduced and discussed.

Who should attend:

• Site engineers who are in charge of supervising testing.
• Engineers, consultants, foundation professionals who desire to have a better understanding of new testing
technologies in the construction industry.

SPEAKERS BIODATA

Mr. Chong Mun Fai obtained his B.Eng (Civil) from Monash University Melbourne, Australia (1990). He has been involved
in the foundation testing industry since 1989. During the years he participated in numerous PDA Users Days in Malaysia,
Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong and USA where in depth training of High Strain Dynamic Load Testing and
interpretation was taught. He is a certified PDA tester with a MASTER level in Dynamic Measurement and Analysis Proficiency
Test from Pile Driving Contractors Association, USA.

At present he is the Managing Director of Dynamic Pile Testing Sdn Bhd which he set up in 1994. In 2015 he established
Smart Sensing Technology Sdn Bhd to facilitate testing using Fibre Optics Sensing. Most of the work are in Malaysia but the
services of DPT has spread to countries like New Zealand, Australia, Guam, Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea,
Taiwan, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia and the middle east like Saudi, UAE and Yemen.

He has travelled and shared his knowledge in IEM, HATTI (Indonesia), HKUST, Cambridge University and lately in Eurasian
National University (Kazakhstan).

Dr Regine obtained her B.Sc (Civil) from University Sains Malaysia and Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from University
Malaya. She is currently a senior engineer in Smart Sensing Technology Sdn Bhd involved in geotechnical design and testing.
She involves mainly in the design of Bi-Directional Static Load Test instrumented with fibre optic strain sensor. Her experience
include site installation and testing works of normal Maintained Load test, Bidirectional Static Load tests, analysis and
interpretation of the fibre optics strain results. Her current role includes introducing and implementation of advanced sensing
technology, i.e. the Fibre Optic Sensors in Structural Health Monitoring.

Mr. Tee Bun Pin obtained his B.Eng (Civil) and M. Eng (Civil-Struc) from Univertisi Teknologi, Malaysia (2002 and 2005).
He has 6 years’ experience as consulting engineer involved in high-rise building and infra-structure design. He also has 5
years’ experience as major infra-structure and building contractor. Since year 2012, he has been involved in the research
and application of Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing Technology (DFOS). Currently, he has successfully implemented the
DFOS in varies civil engineering application in Malaysia, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Indonesia.

At present he is the General Manager of Smart Sensing Technology Sdn Bhd (SST) which he set up in 2015 to facilitate testing
and structural health monitoring using Distributed Fibre Optics Sensing Technology (DFOS). Currently, SST had successfully
implemented DFOS in many types of civil engineering application including instrumented test pile (Top-loaded Pile Maintained
Load Test, Bi-Directional Load Test, Lateral Pile Load Test, Pile Bending Test), soil nail pull-out test, diaphragm wall, basement
slab and tunnel deformation monitoring. Some recent projects that had been successful implemented with DFOS are MRT2,
LRT3, KL118, The Signature Tower at TRX, Oxley Tower, Damansara Town Center and some residential high-rise building
projects.
