Do a closing activity such as a Color Poem all together. Have students agree on a color and ask
for what things can be that color. What makes _____?
Use purple as an example:
Grape Sweet smooth grape
Sweater Cozy soft sweater
Shoes Shiny new shoes
Say: To make it more interesting, we are going to add more words to it.
Ask: How does a grape taste? What does a sweater feel like? What about shoes?
Add on words to the color that students say.
Reread poem.
Closure: Form a coherent picture of the content. Reinforce major points learned. Clarify key points.
Go back and discuss bits and pieces of what was taught. Ask them what they remember and
emphasize each main point of poetry once more.
Did they recognize rhyming words in all poems read?
Discuss poem just created and ask if it rhymed? What did it make them feel? Can you imagine
the poem? Does it make you laugh, is it silly?
Say: Poetry is different than a story because it has fewer words and it even creates a picture in
your mind. Sometimes it’ll rhyme but it won’t always. Like our color poem, it didn’t rhyme but
it is still a poem. They can be as silly or just make you feel a lot of different ways. Remember,
poems can even be found everywhere! In a color, the bible, etc.
