Type of Phrase

In this lesson, you'll see how Django plays a few phrases over one shape on the
fingerboard with the same notes and makes it sound different each time.

You can hear Django using this idea often, in many songs.

The first type is a phrase that Django plays over minor6 and Dom7 chords. It sits
on the half-dim7 arpeggio in such a way that when you play it from the 6 th degree
of the minor chord, you just get an inversion of the minor 6 chord and when you
play it from the 3rd degree of the Dom7 chord you get the 7add9 sound.

I show all the shapes and the explanation of that in my Complete Arpeggio and
Rest Stroke Picking Course, but for now, let's just concentrate on playing:

Phrase type 1: minor6 and Dom9 chords

The shape:

You can see that the shapes are the same, you can add or omit notes, but it's the
same idea. Now what you have to do is to make music with these shapes.

So, here are a few variations from Django's solo. You will hear many more
variations in other solos of his.

All the examples are over Am6/D9.

Learn to transpose them to all keys. It's easy on the guitar; all you need to do is to
move the shapes.

Phrase type 2: Dom7b9

This is something Django does a lot, playing the dim7 arpeggio from the 3 rd, 5th,
b7th or b9th of the Dom7 gives you the 7b9 sound.

Django usually mixed it with the descending harmonic minor scale from its 5 th
degree; combined, that gives you what I call "The Ultimate Gypsy Run" in one of
my courses.

Here, Django doesn't use the whole run, but only a small part of it. But he always
combines the dim7 arpeggio and harmonic minor scale.
