Association for Women in Communications (AWC) breaks hearts

Winthrop AWC cancels spring semester events

The Association for Women in Communications plans many recruiting events for the spring semester. After the
CDC declaring COVID-19 as a pandemic, the University shut down, canceling all upcoming events.

AWC was hoping to use the spring semester as a way to involve more students. With future events such as
movie screenings, tabling, guest speakers, and collaborative communication workshops, recruiting came to an
abrupt end.

Many students were looking forward to the new events. “Although I’m a senior, I know the younger members
are working hard to focus on recruiting events for the fall semester,” says Mariah Jurrow, AWC member.

The goal of the semester was to show the campus what AWC has to offer their student’s in engaging and unique
way. “Right now, we are just making sure everyone is staying safe and trying to focus on the future of the
organization,” Jurrow says.

“We’re really upset that we were just beginning to recruit new people and bring awareness to how great this
group is for young minds. We are now having to rely solely on social media,” said Madeline Milne, AWC
member.

“We will do our best to adapt to the sudden changes, as well as observe the ways the communication industry is
being affected,” said Madeline Milne.
