With a history of manufacturing in China that dates back to
the 1980s, Celanese is more committed than ever to delivering
product and technical solutions to Asia. Today, in the area
of emulsions, we have a dedicated local sales and technical
service team and laboratory in place to meet your need for
world-class quality standards.
Our ability to support our coatings customers within Asia is
about to take a great step forward. Today, Celanese is building
an integrated chemical complex in Nanjing, China, that will
manufacture some of the leading technologies required for
world-class coatings.
A new, world scale polymer emulsions complex
The new Nanjing site will feature a state-of-the-art vinyl acetate
ethylene (VAE) emulsions production facility as well as an
atmospheric emulsions facility to serve local requirements.
The emulsions facility will begin production in 2007. In order
to ensure superior customer service in China, a technical
service laboratory will also be based at the Nanjing site.
This world-class manufacturing complex will be totally inte-
grated to ensure continuous world scale supply. The facility
will include a 600,000 metric ton acetic acid plant that will
begin commercial sales in early 2007. A 300,000 metric ton
vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) plant will be operational in
late 2007 or early 2008. This local manufacturing complex
will incorporate the leading technology from the other plants
that Celanese operates around the world.
This new investment will make Celanese a fully integrated
acetyls manufacturer in China and trusted source of
supply in the decades to come.

Formulating better interior paints.

Low to no VOC formulations

Consumers across the world have been demanding more

environmentally friendly paints for years. Regulations limiting
the VOC content of interior paints are also driving the
development of new paint formulations. At the leading edge
of environmentally friendly technology, Celanese has shown
manufacturers that premium quality water-borne decorative
coatings can be formulated without the aid of coalescing
solvents with VAE technology. Solvent-free products are rated
highly among health-conscious consumers, while their low
odor is a distinct marketing advantage to all contractors and
consumers. Our emulsion products prove it is possible to
formulate a premium quality paint that satisfies the demands
of the consumer while also meeting the toughest regulatory

Conventional interior paints

Celanese also offers various emulsions for formulating interior

paints with coalescing agents. Vinyl acetate/VeoVa® polymer
technology can be used to formulate cost effective matt and
satin interior paints which offer excellent rheology properties,
color retention and stain resistance. This versatile binder can
also be used for exterior applications and offers superior alkali
resistance for use on masonry surfaces.

Formulating superior exterior paints.

The durability of pure acrylics

Use Celanese’s pure acrylic emulsions for durable exterior

paints. A combination of low water uptake and good hardness
of the polymer enables pure acrylic emulsions to exhibit excel-
lent durability even in the toughest climates. These emulsions
can be used to formulate premium quality exterior paints, plas-
ters and marble-chip plasters.

Emulsion technology for thermal insulation systems

Celanese has a range of emulsions to assist in the formulation

of products with superior application properties for use in ther-
mal insulation systems. Celanese offers three polymer types for
this market: vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE), vinyl acetate/VeoVa®
and pure acrylic. Formulate environmentally friendly coatings
that have no secondary energy costs in drying.

Superior water-based wood coatings

Our acrylic emulsions enable the coatings chemists to formulate

high-performance wood coatings using a water-borne system
in place of the traditional solvent-borne system. Varnishes
made with Celanese acrylic emulsions impart a high gloss
decorative finish while protecting the wood from damaging
marks and spills. They also offer good blocking resistance for
use on doors, windows, etc. Low VOC wood coatings are the
market of the future and Celanese acrylic emulsions enable
you to capitalize on the reduced VOC trend.
