context

PREVIOUS LESSON

In the previous lesson, students focused on emotions in media, specifically in movies. They used these emotions
to help write short personal narratives. My lesson will incorporate expression and using emotions when the
students see personification in short clips of movies, advertisements, and also write their own short story.

UPCOMMING LESSON

The students will write their own narratives, whether they be personal, biographical, or fictional as the
culminating writing project for the end of the year. My lesson will aid in supporting ideas related to
fictional narratives.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION
What are the issues or concerns that you need to take into consideration as you plan and teach this lesson?

I need to take into consideration the students' vocabulary familiarity because there are some larger and more
complicated words that students may not know yet. I also need to take into consideration how much time to
allot for students to create their puppet show commercials. This is because they need to write it down first,
and then practice reading, speaking, and moving the puppets all at the same time.

LESSON PROCEDURES
Indicate
! how you will teach the lesson.

The times are a rough estimate of how long each section of the lesson should take.
1. Before class, the teacher will make sure that the project and speakers are working correctly, and
that the Google Slides presentation is ready to begin. The teacher will also make sure that they
have enough copies of the printed materials to distribute to students.
2. When the students enter, the teacher will have an oral prompt and ask students what they did
over the weekend. (5 minutes)
3. After the oral prompt, the teacher will explain to the students that they will be learning about
personification. The teacher will show this slide on the Google PowerPoint and will explain the
definition to them. The teacher will hand out the graphic organizer to the students. Then, the
teacher will play the clip of All In The Golden Afternoon from the Disney Movie, Alice In
Wonderland. The teacher will ask students to identify the characteristics of the flowers and write
this in the graphic organizer. (5 minutes)
4. Then, the teacher will explain that the flowers are inanimate objects and that Alice is an animate
object. The teacher will show these slides on the Google PowerPoint, explain the definitions, and
ask the students to write this in their graphic organizer as well as the expressions. The teacher will
emphasize that in real life, flowers cannot speak, sing, or move like humans, but how in this
example, they are demonstrating human characteristics. (5 minutes)
5. Next, the teacher will explain that they will watch a few short advertisements and identify whether
the objects are animate or inanimate, the characteristics and the expressions of each object, and
write them down in their graphic organizers. The teacher will show this slide on the Google
PowerPoint and will explain the definition. The teacher will play an M&M's commercial, a Geico the
Gecko commercial, and a Goldfish commercial. (7 minutes)
6. After, the teacher will ask students to flip over their page and will pair up students to read and
identify two short sentences and one short passage that implement personification in literature. The
students will use the same graphic organizer to identify the personification. (5 minutes)
7. Next, the teacher will explain that the students will create their own, five sentence advertisement
and script that uses personification that they will present to the class. The teacher will explain that
the students will put on a puppet show with provided stuffed animals. The teacher will write the
word script on the board and will explain the definition. The teacher will explain that the script can
either be based off of a list of provided scenarios (going to the beach, a birthday party, playing
soccer, baking cookies), or the students can come up with their own. The teacher will walk around
and assess the students' progress and assist if they need help. (10 minutes)
8. Students will have three minutes to practice reading and performing their script while using the
stuffed animals before presenting it to the class. (3 minutes)
9. Lastly, students will present their puppet show advertisement to the class. (5 minutes)
10. If time is alloted, students will either verbally answer or write down what they enjoyed and
learned from this lesson.
