PARAGRAPH

Read the passage through carefully before you attempt any question.
The poetic expressiveness and creativity of Japanese women poets of the Manyoshu era is generally
regarded as a manifestation of the freedom and relatively high political and economic status women of that
era enjoyed. During the Heian period (A.D. 794-1185) which followed, Japanese women became
increasingly relegated to domestic roles under the influence of Buddhism and Confucianism, which
excluded women from the political and economic arenas. Yet, since poetry of the period came to be defined
solely as short lyrical poetry, known as waka, and became the prevailing means of expressing love, women
continued to excel in and play a central role in the development of classical Japanese poetry. Moreover,
while official Japanese documents were written in Chinese, the phonetic alphabet kana was used for poetry.
Also referred to as onna moji ("women's letters"), kana was not deemed sufficiently sophisticated for use
by Japanese men, who continued to write Chinese poetry, increasingly for expressing religious ideas and as
an intellectual pastime. Chinese poetry ultimately yielded, then, to waka as the mainstream of Japanese
poetry.

PASSAGE

Read the passage through carefully before you attempt any question.

Have you ever thought that within a single afternoon you could lose your
sense of security? Have you ever taken into consideration changing
completely the way you look at the world around you? That happened to

vujannat.ning.Com
WWW.vujannat.ning.COM

me, and I'm still paying for the consequences of somebody else's action.
The feeling of security and serenity, that everyone should have, is often
taken away with brutality for the price of a few dollars. Unfortunately, this
happens over and over throughout the world, and it is hard for the victims
of criminal actions to recover from their deep wounds.

It was just a day like any other, if possible, even better because it was a
Saturday, the end of the working week, and one of the first nice and sunny
days of Rome's spring. My best friend and I were in the shop that she
owns. It was the middle of the afternoon; we were both pretty happy and
making plans for the weekend, and the atmosphere was extremely relaxed,
almost lazy. Suddenly a man entered in the shop. We knew, somehow, that
he didn't look like one of our usual customers, but we welcomed him
politely anyway. Without any hesitation he pulled something out of his coat
that we did not recognize immediately, but when he ordered us to go into
the back with him, there was no doubt that this "something" was a gun. We
were so scared that we could barely understand what was going on. My
heart was beating so franticly, that I thought everyone could hear it.
Suddenly, while watching the entire scene in astonishment, a shiver ran
down my spine. I had that kind of feeling like when you are not sure if
you're dreaming or not. In the beginning, I thought it was a stupid joke by a
similarly stupid friend of ours, but it took me half a second to realize that it
was cruel reality. I still shudder at the thought of it. He seemed to me so
calm and so used to this kind of action. "Don't you dare say a single word
and come with me in the storage" he said. It was almost a whisper, a few
simple words uttered nastily. He gave us precise orders and while doing
this, he offended us and kept reminding us that he could shoot at any time.
He looked for the money in the register, from our wallets, then he asked for
our jewelry and we gave him all he wanted. He was imperturbable while
bringing his "job" to conclusion. At that point, he was supposed to leave,
instead, he seemed not to have any intention to do so. Suddenly I
remember his face becoming soaked in sweat. My friend and I had no
chance to talk to each other and exchange our thoughts, but I'm sure we
had the same horrible feeling. Fortunately, after a few interminable minutes
he left.

You can never know where you can feel safe; growing up you learn that
gradually. When you are a child, you feel safe with your parents in your
home or wherever you are not alone. Then you begin to understand the
news and you learn that horrible things are happening "out there", but you
still keep thinking that those events are just other people's worries, not
yours. Terrible things happen only to the people you read about in the
newspaper, but you will soon start to explore the world on your own and
little, insignificant, nasty things begin to happen to you too. You see a car
accident, you look at ambulances, someone is mean to you and, somehow,
you know that this is as the world goes. Then your conscience starts to

vujannat.ning.Com
WWW.vujannat.ning.COM

make you realize that you are a person like any other. So why couldn't bad
things happen to you? You are afraid that something could happen and,
depending on your optimistic or pessimistic mood, you can deal or not
with this thought.

I think that from the precise moment the guy walked out of the shop, I
completely changed my way of relating to the world. Someone could say
that I am exaggerating, and maybe they are right, but this is how I feel. I
always look around to see which kinds of people are possibly following me.
Now I usually double-check everything: if I've locked myself in the car or in
the house. I think about how to dress if I have to go out alone or in a
particular part of the town; I am always careful not to wear any jewelry.
Whenever an unknown guy is getting too close or is trying to get
information from me, I tighten up. I know that it is wrong, that not everyone
is looking to attack me again. After all, I consider myself lucky, since
nothing really bad happened to me or to my friend, but what affects me is
the thought of what could have happened. We could have died or he could
have beaten us! I know that I have to work on it because since that day I
haven't felt safe anymore, What I don't know is where to start. Now I am
sure only of one fact, that I blame this guy, not for having taken my jewelry,
but for having deprived me of my innocence.

PARAGRAPH

vujannat.ning.Com
WWW.vujannat.ning.COM

Read the passage through carefully before you attempt any question.

Although America carries a huge trade deficit with many countries of the world,
she exports to the world both her energetic culture and youthful spirit. These are most obviously reflected
in her fast food franchise outlets and dynamic film industry with its wide range of wide international
appeal.
When one considers why the Soviet system has collapsed and Western capitalism still thrives, many
political analysts and well-seasoned economists may offer a variety of reasons.
The answer, if simplified to an extreme, can be summed up quite easily. The Soviets exported ideology
while the capitalists satisfied practical needs. They exported fast foods and entertainment. The Soviets took
themselves and their ideology far too seriously. Lenin, in death was never decently buried but immortalized
in a vacuum-sealed glass coffin. The Soviet ideology is far too heavy-handed, far too difficult to digest for
people who only wanted their daily bread and a little humor. Ideologies are too abstract to absorb and too
hypothetical to find useful. They are not very nourishing and when forced upon the public over several
generations, they breed resentment, boredom and poverty.
On the other hand, fast foods appease the hunger at a price almost everyone can afford. Some have argued
that many fast foods contain far too many calories and the average hamburger and milkshake is high in
cholesterol and low in nutrition. But, the ambiance in the places which serve such foods is clean, friendly
and familiar.
America has capitalized on the appeal of fast food and successfully marketed its image. The fast food
restaurants with their perky attendants, soft background music and cheerful decor offer a homey, pleasant
atmosphere where a hamburger and a milkshake can be purchased at a reasonable price. Furthermore,
they can be found in almost every developed country throughout the world and have found a large
patronage in some of the most unlikely places. Even Moscow has finally succumbed to the pressure of the
people and the yellow arches of McDonald's can be found in the Russian capital.
In a similar manner the American film industry continues to delight and entertain both young and old
around the world. Films like E.T. and Jaws are popular because they are exciting. American actors and
actresses are often are handsome and attractive and have an international appeal. Directors like Spielberg
and Scorsese have established international reputations. They are gifted talents who know the art of
entertaining an audience and have produced films which have transcended culture and appeal to people of
all ages.

In addition, the hi-tech, special effects, the use of computer graphics and tremendous financial investments
which go into the making of a great film add to the wonder of the finished product. Nowhere is this better
illustrated than in the popular international mania which followed the release of the Titanic. So, forget
your problems, eat a cheeseburger with french fries, wash them down with a milkshake and take in a good
movie. It's the American way!

Passage

Alexander the Great had placed himself before the relief at Persepolis, the richest city in all
Persia. He had just come through rooms in which beautiful tapestries covered the walls.

vujannat.ning.Com
WWW.vujannat.ning.COM
Earlier he had seen, in one of the several palatial residences, caskets made from Lebanon
cedar, their wooden sides engraved, and decorated with gold and silver. He had admired the
high ceilings, supported by fluted columns that held aloft carvings of bulls and griffins.

Now he carefully studied the figures that had been chiseled into the outer stone walls. The
dress on some of the figures represented the attire in lands that Alexander had already
claimed for himself. The costumes on yet other carved figures represented people in lands
that were still part of the vast Persian Empire. These were lands that Alexander planned to
conquer. The people shown taking tributes to the Persian King were people whom Alexander
intended to subjugate.

Alexander the Great was eager to move on to these distant lands, but his colleagues, who had
downed large amounts of wine, stumbled around in a drunken stupor. Their inebriated
minds stirred up within them a desire for revenge. They wanted to make the Persians pay for
the damage a former Persian king, Xerxes, had done after invading Athens, more than 150
years earlier. Goaded by these drunken men and beguiled by members of his harem,
Alexander the Great ordered the burning of Persepolis.
Men and women, holding aloft flaming torches, raced up and down the terraces of Persepolis.

Flames ignited the wooden beams of the palaces once built by Xerxes. Looters fought off the
heat of the inferno in order to drag out gold vessels, and to tear silver rings from heavy
draperies.

When the fires had died out, all that remained were the tall stone columns and the exquisite
stone carvings on the outer walls. Alexander the Great had left, for discovery by future
visitors, the Persian soldiers who were untouched by the leaping flames. These “Immortals”
still march today in precise formation across the chiseled stone remains of Persepolis.

Passage

Just as most of us were finally beginning to grasp the Y2K problem, the confusion that
may follow a computer's failure to read zero-zero as the year 2000. Along comes
September 9th, 1999.
Some older computers, we were told, might read 9-9-99 as a kind of shorthand used to
mark the end of a program and shut something down! Like the northwest electric grid of
the Bonneville Power Administration.
That got everyone's attention focused on the last big nationwide power company
readiness drill for the year two thousand.
Here in Washington State, and practically everywhere else in the United States and
Canada, September 9th arrived without a hitch.
At least not a computer hitch. But there was a telephone call that threatened BPA's power
grid, one of the biggest in the country. The call came from someone who persuaded
someone else to throw some switches. However, an alert operator rerouted power and
quickly fixed the problem.
Judi Johnson is a Bonneville Power Administrator; "There are people who would like Y2K
to be a real event."
After a tour of BPA's control center, energy secretary Bill Richardson declared it and the
nation almost ready for New Year's Day, 2000. He says, "I can report today that
Bonneville is Y2K ready, and I have had reports from power companies all over the
country that they have all passed with flying colors."
The secretary acknowledged that 9-9-99 was never a serious concern but a way to focus
on 1-1-2000.
In the end, the energy secretary said, it was not so much a test of Y2K readiness, as it
was a show of confidence in the nation's electric companies even though, he
acknowledged, one percent is still not Y2K compliant.
