High Volume Low Speed Fans

Justifying an HVLS fan upgrade

High volume fans help relieve the highs and lows of temperature ranges in
large, open buildings by destratifying temperature zones
Energy efficient and quiet
Long 18-24' blades move large volumes of air with very little draft
Slow speed reduces total energy cost for heating/cooling large areas
Highly engineered slow speed high volume fans from MacroAir distribute air quietly
through a facility, destratifying varying air layers for even temperatures
throughout without noticeable air currents to chill workers. Saves heating and
cooling costs.
Revolutionary blade design and energy efficiency mark the Whalenado fan from
Nordock as a strong competitor in the HVLS market. With 8' - 24' diameter sizes,
these fans move up to 397,000 cfm pulling only 3 amps for the largest fan.

Patterson Fans
With air volumes of up to over 380,000 cfm and coverage for a single fan of up to
20,000 sq. ft., Patterson fans are industrial work horses that mix air layers and
provide a more comfortable environment for workers.

High volume, low speed fans reduce utility costs, increase comfort

Industrial ceiling fans provide superior ventilation capabilities. They

continuously mix incoming fresh air with stale air, thus minimizing the total
amount of ventilation required to achieve adequate air quality. No other fan,
system, or ventilation technology does this better.

When used as a stand-alone cooling system, they can reduce the temperature to
yield an effective cooling of up to 8 F less within the fan's coverage area (up to
20,000 square feet per 24' fan)
When used in conjunction with an air conditioning system, its slow and steady
air flow can reduce or eliminate the need for costly and efficiency-reducing A/C
duct work
Effective for shipping docks, and other areas with opening doors and bays
During heating seasons, HVLS technology de-stratifies uneven temperatures that
occur at each level throughout the facility - forcing unused heated air from the
ceiling down to floor where it can have a positive impact on employees. This heat
differential can be in excess of 15 F from ceiling to floor, enabling significant
cost savings when thermostat levels are reduced
One HVLS fan consumes about the same electricity as one high-speed alley fan
but moves 12 times the amount the air
Better ventilation reduces spoilage due to pent-up moisture pockets or humidity
Quiet and non-disruptive operation
Benefits with or without air conditioning

When it's hot in facilities without A/C, slowly moving air breaks up the moisture-
saturated boundary layer surrounding the body, accelerating evaporation to produce
a cooling effect. When used in conjunction with air conditioning or evaporation
cooling systems, HVLS Fans can efficiently circulate cooled air throughout the
structure.

During the cold months the basic problem is air temperature stratification. Simply
put, this means since heated air rises, it gets caught in the ceiling and can
typically yield a significant temperature differential from that found on the
floor.

De-stratify heat levels to effectively heat or cool large spaces

HVLS fan technology circulates this trapped heat, continually forcing it to

circulate down and throughout the structure. This provides a more even distribution
of heat from top to bottom - especially important when employees are working at
different levels within a generally open structure. Furthermore, because of
advanced technology, there's never a chilling breeze - air movement is
imperceptible.

How to cool a warehouseLets face it: whether theyre concrete tilt-ups or

constructed of metal, warehouses can become stifling in the summer months,
especially if they lack adequate ventilation. Warehouse owners and facility
managers begin their search for HVLS commercial ceiling fans because they want to
cool down a warehouse for various reasons, including:
Inadequate Ventilation / Poor Air Quality

The activity that happens in a warehouse from manufacturing production lines to

forklifts spewing noxious fumes into the air to sheer people density makes it
imperative that warehouse owners and managers ensure fresh air is continuously
circulated.

Although a building may have an air exhaust system, the opening and closing of dock
doors creates short circuit scenarios. For example, the air pressure created in the
suction of the exhaust circumvents the system intake devices. Even on a closed
building system, the air drawn from the building and the air being replenished
follow a path near the ceiling versus the the entire buildings air space. In other
words, lots of stale air is left behind.

HVLS fans eliminate this problem as they continuously mix and churn all of the air
inside a building.
Safety Concerns

On high humidity days, water vapor is released into a building. Water vapor moves
independently of air and always flows to the coldest point, such as concrete
floors, which cool down at night. Once the concrete slab reaches dew point as
temperatures increase, condensation is formed on the floor posing real safety
hazards to people, animals and machinery (i.e. forklifts, Cow Mastitis).

Because HVLS fans constantly mix air from roof to floor, a constant state of
thermal equilibrium exists inside the building and hence, condensation doesnt
form.
Skyrocketing Energy Costs

If a company uses air conditioning, its usually regulated to sections of the

warehouse where products (i.e. pharmaceuticals) need to be kept at a constant
temperature. And because AC is costly, companies hold the line on running it on a
constant basis. Or, a company may be running dozens of high-speed 36? fans, which
are energy hogs.

In contrast, HVLS fans are incredibly energy efficient. One 24 foot HVLS fan can
replace 25 36" high velocity fans, can cover 10,000 square feet of space, and
achieve efficiencies of 300+ CFM/Watt at full speed versus 18 20 CFM/Watt for 36"
high velocity fans.
HVLS fans also work very well in conjunction with air conditioning as they maintain
constant humidity allowing building managers to raise the AC set point by as much
as 12 15 degrees. For each increase in degree, the energy savings is estimated at
a 3 5% reduction in energy consumption.
And, if youre designing a warehouse, including HVLS fans into your design enables
you to lower the amount of AC tonnage needed by 40%. (We have case studies coming
stay tuned!)
Personal Comfort

When youre hot, sticky and sweaty, you know even a little bit of air movement over
your skin feels really good. This is because the air evaporates the sweat on your
skin, which makes you feel cooler.

HVLS fans gently move a large column of air down and out, making everyone inside a
building feel cool and comfortable.
