5-7 Race Calendar

Its time to bid farewell to 2010 and welcome in 2011. 2010 was a great year for the club. We saw lots of growth in membership, expanded our training programs to add a First 5K Program for adult runners, and expanded our Young Runners Club for kids as well as our Marathon and Half Marathon Training Programs. Our second annual Summer Sizzler 5K /10K race was a great success with more runners than ever competing in the event. We even added a kids fun run to the Summer Sizzler festivities. As a club we participated in numerous races of all distances including everything from the 5K or10k distance to several local and out of town marathons and half marathons. There was also the Warrior Dash, an obstacle course mud run, and our very first triathlon as a club at WoodRiver. Of course not all of our time was spent running, our red9runners also stepped up to the plate and volunteered for the YMCA‟s Partner With Youth campaign as well as volunteering to help put on other local races. There was also time to relax and hang out at the Spring Picnic, the marathon pasta party, traveling to races together. celebrating after, feasting at the Custard Run, and of course the Christmas Social. There were pr‟s set, first time achievements gained, and personal goals met. 2010 was a wonderful year! A very heartfelt thank you to all of our fabulous runners and volunteers who have made this past year such a huge success. As great as 2010 was, I have a feeling that 2011 will be even better. We are very excited about the half marathon scheduled for May 22, 2011. We will need lots of help from our faithful red9‟ers, so be sure to mark your calendar. When/Why did you start Running? I started trying to run June 2008. I was dieting and started going to the Y on a regular basis, Joe set me up on a routine, when we met the 2 nd time he saw that I was avoiding the treadmill, I was at a standstill with my weight loss and needed some impact in my routine. When asked why I wasn‟t using the treadmill I had many excuses with one of them being back trouble. Joe explained the benefits and how I could get started trying so I thought it was best that I attempt a regular routine on the treadmill, walking. I then moved my walking outside, I would walk around the horse pasture, I started running to one fence post then walk to the next. I slowly got where I could run all the way around. Yes, I started feeling pretty great and the new routine was helping me loose weight. Miles last week: 20 Favorite Distance? 6 miles Your first Race: Ben‟s Hope Edwardsville Nov. 2008 Your last Race: Girls on the Run, Forest Park Nov. 2010 Favorite Race? All of them, I still can‟t believe I actually run. Your mantra is: Keep putting one foot in front of the other (from Dave Cashen) Favorite food before a race or long run? Whole wheat toast with Natural Peanut Butter Favorite Gadget? Nike +/ ipod Something “strange” you always need on a run? I don‟t need anything to strange “yet” just music/phone Amount of races you've done in your life? 12 including Sprint Triathlons Amount of races you've done this year? 8 When I can't run, I... get cranky and worn out

Music or no Music? Yes, when alone If yes, favorite music: I like a variety of music, I have a lot of Hip Hop and Christian music on my ipod right now, anything that peps up my mood. Favorite book? Bob Greene‟s Best Life Favorite Movie? Pretty Woman Favorite Runner? I envy those who are fast, I‟m sure I‟ll never run a 5 or 6 minute mile. Dave and Betsy have been a large influence with my running. I‟m thankful to Dave for getting me started in the run club and telling me to keep putting one foot in front of the other and to Betsy and Cheri for helping me through my first ½ Marathon. Favorite brand of apparel? Fila and Saucony Favorite brand of shoes? Mizuno How many pairs of running shoes do you have? 1 active, several retired that I switch off to once in awhile Fuel on long run or race is: GU gel and Chomps Last/current injury: Haven‟t had an injury that I‟ve had to go to the doctor for, just a few aches and pains PR you're most proud of: 28 min. 5k this past summer Next Challenge ahead: The Lincoln ½ Marathon in Springfield and GO! St. Louis Full Marathon within a week A Goal further ahead you'd like to get to someday: Well, I didn‟t think I would be doing a Full Marathon this soon, it was a future goal that has became a “near” future goal. Why do you run? Health Benefits, running helped me get off of my BP Med. and it makes me feel good. I hate getting out there many days but once I‟m done I feel awesome. Running has been great for my Grief Depression, my son died suddenly 4 yrs. ago and if I had not started working out and running I would probably stay in bed most of the time. Exercise is a great drug.

Way of Lights 5K - Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. - This is an evening run through the Christmas Lights at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville. Check out Winter Luau 5K - Saturday, January 29, 2011 - This race is held at Lindenwood University in Belleville, IL and has a luau theme. Toolen‟s Top „O The Morning Hibernian 5K - Sunday, March 6, 2011 - This irish-themed run held at Toolen‟s Running Start in Shiloh, IL always has great attendance prizes and lots of good food and beverages. Lincoln Memorial Half Marathon - Sunday, April 3, 2011 - How about a road trip to the Land of Lincoln, Springfield, IL for a half marathon where the medal looks like a giant penny. Go! St. Louis Marathon and Half Marathon, April 10, 2011 - Whether its your first or twenty-first event, we‟ll help you get ready for race day. Marathon and Half Marathon Training Program starts on December 4, 2010.

Running & Racing Report
Capping off a wonderful year, in December we had runners at the Jingle Bell Run as well as the Gingerbread Run. While our Christmas Lights run had to be canceled due to ice, the party was still on with numerous red9‟ers in attendance. December also kicked off our marathon and half marathon training program with 20 runners deciding to train for long distance. Most are training for the Go! St. Louis full or half marathon, however we have others who are doing that race as well as Land of Lincoln in Springfield, IL, the Country Music Marathon in Nashville, TN, the Lincoln Marathon in Lincoln, NE, and Grandma‟s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota.
