Newage Garment established in 1984, the company has been successfully exporting formal & dress shirts for over two decades to exacting standards. With 220,000 pieces per month production capacity, fabrics used are numerous and include solid and yarn dyed Cotton, CVC, TC, Poplin, Polyester, Twill and Dobby sourced from local and regional suppliers. Their buyers are happy to lean on them for product development based on a large collection of fabric gathered from their extensive network of suppliers. The 5,000 square meter factory is situated in Dhaka and employs over 1,300 people. The factory has received certification from a number of their buyers who are satisfied with their work practices.
1.1 Origin of the Report:
The Report is originated from our Industrial Relations course teacher Tasnuva Rahman and as it’s an essential part of this course. It gives students an opportunity to know real life situation in a better way. Through this report we have get an opportunity to know that the way of compare the following HR practices with Labor Code 2006 in Newage Garment.
Broad objective: The broad objective of preparing this report is to identifying the HR practices with Labor Code 2006 in “Newage Garment.” Specific Objective: The specific objective of the report is to identifying:To identify whether there is any trade union or not To identify whether they gives the employees full salaries or not Whether there is any sufficient lighting facility, bonus facility, overtime facility or not Whether there is any working facility, holiday facility and other facility
It’s very difficult to collect all the relevant data because the garments manager don’t want to give us necessary information and Due to time constraints and access limitation. Secondary sources: We have also gathered data about from the company’s own website and brochure. we have encountered some typical difficulties. it was not possible for us to get some other data required precisely.1.3 Scope and Limitation: To prepare the report as our course teacher mentioned the scope of following to compare the HR practices with Labor Code 2006 so we couldn’t exceed the boundary. 1. They have no any chamber tank. Floors. They established alarm for warning their worker to remove accident. vat. They don’t arranged demonstration of fire extinguishing. Workers are familiar to escape incase of fire. But every floor has a large adjust fan which can cold the working place. Precautions in case of fire The garments have an alternative stair connected with every floor and their have equipped for escape in case of fire. pit. Machines of the organization were established in a suitable place for worker. Protection of eyes It is a garments so worker is save from eyes problem but some worker face this problem who always can do work looking down. They write up the ordinary door using red color. They have a free passage way of escape incase of fire for use all of the workers. Their doors are not exit from any room. The garments authority give training to the worker that how to escape in case of fire. Precautions against dangerous fumes A pipe has in the outside of the generator room which is adjusted with generator which is help to remove smoke. pipe flue because it is a cloth garments.

Restriction on working hours of women Women workers don’t work in the garment in between 10p. But in special cases. Their interval for take rest or have meal does not spread over more than 9 hours in a day that save with the permission of the government. but that is not exceeding sixty hours in a week. Night Shift For working in night shift. Spread over of working hours The periods of work of the workers are coordinately arranged. Adult workers are required to work for forty-eight hours in a week. Weekly holiday Workers get one day as weekly holiday Compensatory weekly holiday In case of emergency if any worker don’t get the weekly holiday for excess work they shall get compensatory weekly holiday. The rate of allowances is not fixed for every worker.m 8 .m-6p.
Sick leave Workers in the garments don’t get full wages for the purpose of sick leave. Manager fixes the group which is required to work on a system of shifts and which is not required any system of shifts. This includes the periods of work that is required to be done by the workers. In case of group work. Manager also fixes the system of shifts and the relays are supposed to change periodically. Number of groups. 9 . is mentioned separately in the notice. Notice of periods of work for adults and preparation thereof There is a displayed notice that is correctly maintained by the workers. Annual leave with wages Every adult worker who has completed a period of one year continuous service in the garments are allowed to leave one day for every twelve days of work with full wages.Restriction on double employment No adult worker employed for work in more than one establishment on any day. workers time etc. Casual leave Every worker permitted to casual leave with full wages for ten days in a year. workers are classified groups under different supervisor according to the nature of work. Worker’s monthly income according to government rule is-3000 taka and they have overtime work facilities. Any leave with wages c. 2. They always try to keep distance with them. The management of the Newage garment is not so much co-operative with workers.6 Trade Union: One year ago. The chief executive of the establishment or the manager or a person responsible to the employer for the control and supervision of the establishment shall be responsible for such payment. they communicate with worker by third party or leader. But now there is no trade union exists in the organization. 11 . there was a trade union in Newage garment and they were also involved with Jatio Shromik Party. If the contractor does not pay the wages. Their leader was also member of JSP. The leader always talked with their workers and discuss about their problem.Responsibility for payment of wages Every employer shall be responsible for the payment to persons employed by him of all wages required to be paid according to the code. After identify their problem they communicated with the management and try to solve the workers problem. When workers face any problem by management they communicate with JSP. 2. There had a leader between them who is explain their problem to JSP and management. Most of the time workers were exploited by the employer.
there is separate restroom for male and female workers which are suitable for them. 12 . They have emergency electric system in case of load shading. The lunch room is sufficiently lightened. And if they do any fault their work then management cut some fees to their salaries. there is no room for the use of children. Lighting and Drinking water For every employee have sufficient lighting facility. This facility is conveniently accessible and kept clean. Shelters In the garments. Canteens There is no canteen is managing in the garments for the workers. Sometimes they fire employee without any noticed. In every floor. Here another problem is that supervisor or manager always makes bad behavior with employees. where workers have their meal and also take rest at the interval of their work and also have filters of pure drinking water facilities.7 Other facilities Washing facilities There is a separate appropriate facility for washing are provided and maintained for the use of the male and female workers therein. they have Spittoons plant with written in Bengali and English. 2. cool temperature and clean and have proper ventilation facility. They have three fresh water plants. Rooms for children As it’s a garments factory.
Latrines and Urinals They have sufficient latrines for male and female that is separated. They should repaint or re-varnished the entire wall of outside the garments also. 13 . Latrines are provided based on male and female percentage. Worker’s night shift work schedule should be start after sometime of their previous shift. They must have a childcare room for keeping the women worker’s children and with the proper recreation facilities. Garment should provide full wages to the workers for the purpose of sick leave. Garment have an alternative stair that is too slender not so contented. Findings and Recommendation From the visit of this company. Authority should provide the workers a separate rest room where they can take rest only. “Latrines” are written in Bengali and In English. The authority should maintain a fixed rate of allowances for every worker. So they must manage a canteen for the workers and employees. They must provide free schooling facilities for the worker’s children. Holiday of the workers should be increased because many of them have to work in late night as overtime. . we found that the company has good position but they have some problems those are: They have no canteen facility. 3. They must arrange demonstration of extinguishing system. Although they worked very hard so their wages must be increased.
There are both male and female workers works for there live. 14 . medium and small Garments in Bangladesh where many people work. discrimination in welfare measures. political influence etc. As most of the workers are female in the garments the authority should consider the maternity leave for female workers. proper opportunities for better improvement. Sometimes they are supposed to work overtime to earn more money but this is create mental pressure for them though the amount of overtime salary but is not add any great value in their livelihood. lack of safety in workplace. we think they will be able to overcome those problems very soon. Majority of them are female and lower class workers who live below poverty level. They work very hard in Garments from morning to evening. 13 Conclusion At last we can draw a conclusion that there are many large. Except some part. lack of facilities. improper services for the workers. for the improvement and betterment of the labor’s livelihood the owner’s of the Garments Industry should strictly follow the HR practices with Bangladesh Labor Code 2006. The management should develop the HR practices more in the organization so that workers and employers both will be benefited. On the other hand most of the garment’s worker are also facing problems. like. Finally we can say that. But they get very poor salary which is very low for their standard livelihood. We are observing garments which are approximately good in position. As most of the workers are illiterate in this garments so they can not bargaining with the management that’s why they need an effective trade Union. As they are getting low wages so they are not motivated and get interest to do the same work properly.
