Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Being a working student is not easy it takes a lot to manage the demands

of work while going to school at the same time, with some even raising a

family. It can be daunting experience, but getting that diploma in the end while

earning your keep is definitely possible (Ramos, 2017). Working while

studying is not an easy task, especially fir full-time students who work for

more hours a week. This can be tough situation which needs balancing of

time and studies and work. Students working as assistants in the campus

assume extra responsibilities, with the goal of earning for school fees and

other needs. Working full-time while also studying are those who usually

belong to families with low average income, while survival is a must

(Frigillano, et.al,2015).

A study conducted at Georgetown University by Lidiya, K(2018), states

that juggling between work and school can be incredibly stressing, especially
because both endeavors demand ample time and unfaltering concentrations.
Although most jobs don’t pay students enough wages to cover their living
expenses and tuition fees, these wages go a long way in reducing the deficit.
A lot of people think that having a job while studying will be very stressful, but
that is really not the case. Having a goal and mission, will definitely be able to
balance working and studying. In fact, it is more than just balancing job and
school. There is a lot to gain from working while studying.

Further, a study conducted at Polytechnic University of the Philippines,

Santa Rosa Manila. Concludes that the life of working students is not easy.
Working full-time allows them to maintain the current job and salary
associated benefits while also progressing their studies. Students may rely on
their job for their own or for family’s health insurance or students may need
the income for full time work to support themselves and still be able to afford
grad school. Maybe students truly enjoy their job and know that staying
involved there is part of their over all life trajectory just their degree is
continuing to work full-time while commencing grad school may even have
additional benefits, such as a chance to apply classroom learning in work
settings and vice versa. Academic performance of the working students
attractive increased attention among the university teacher and students with
the aim of knowing and understanding the reasons, problems and other
factors affecting them. This may empower them for lifelong learning to their
journey to success hundred by their busy schedule and always no time to
their study (Arceo, et.al,2013).

This study aims to answer this following questions:
1. Why do students choose work while studying?
2. What are the experiences of working students?
3. How they overcome the challenges of being a working students?

Scope and Limitations

This study focuses on the experiences of working students of
Northlink Technological College. The most target participants would be the
working college students. This study limits only to students who are currently
enrolled and who are also working and also previously working. Only those
working students are allowed to participate in the research.
