The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre (or the Tony Award as it is more widely known) was
created in 1947. The name was inspired by Antoinette Perry, an actress, director, producer and leader of the American
Theatre Wing who had passed away around the time of the award’s inception. Broadway musicals and plays that meet
the eligible date requirement are nominated each year by a Nominating Committee and voted for by members of
various theatre organizations. The award categories include Best Musical, Best Play, Best Lead Actor and Actress in a
Musical and Play, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design and many others. The ceremony is presented annually in
New York City by the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League and features performances from current
Broadway musicals and the awards, which are presented by members of the Broadway and entertainment
communities.
