It’s me Top, with a major complaint. I’m sure you know I’m not the complaining type but I’ve been the victim of a tremendous injustice and want people to be aware of what happened.
A wet Toppy playing with a ball at the dog park
It started last Wednesday morning when my mom had to go to the clinic for a blood test. Since I was just sitting around the house I followed her outside and with my best ‘please don’t leave me alone look’ persuaded her to let me in the car and go along. We arrived at the clinic some ten minutes later and since such places have stupid rules like “No dogs allowed inside” mom had to decide between leaving me in the car or tying my leash to a tree outside the clinic. Since there was a nice tree five or six feet from any path mom figured it would be best to leave me outside in the fresh air. She tied me up and went inside. Fifteen minutes later I was patiently waiting by the tree, minding my own business, when a strange man approached. He looked around and seeing I was all alone carefully approached making sure I was as friendly as I look. Seeing that I was just the sweet innocent puppy I appear to be he reached down and undid my leash from my collar. He then attached some kind of metal thing to the collar and started dragging me away. Well, there are limits to my sweet disposition so I let him know my displeasure at this rough treatment by barking loudly. Despite my loud protests nobody came to help me so I took matters into my own paw and nipped him on the leg while pulling strenuously away from his grasp. With my ferocious effort he let go and I immediately ran to the door of the clinic barking and frantically trying to get inside to mom’s protection. A security guard at the clinic saw this and went to the waiting room to alert mom. She immediately came outside and was distressed to see me there. The first thing she noticed was the metal hook hanging from my collar. Seeing my leash was gone she walked over to the tree and discovered it still attached and unbroken, a sure sign someone had let me go. About this time the strange man came over to where mom and the security guard were standing and started rambling about how I had jumped out and bit him when he was just walking down the path. Mom was a bit suspicious and started asking him questions. Rather than answer he just walked away after muttering something about “calling the police.”
A while later mom took me home and we thought the incident was over. She told dad and he was furious since he was certain that I had narrowly avoided a ‘dog napping’ by what he called a … well, I’d prefer not to use that term. It turns out the incident wasn’t over. Apparently the security guard called the police or SPCA to report the incident and this morning an animal control officer came to our house to investigate. Dad told him my version of what had happened, it’s amazing how dad knew exactly what happened but I guess that’s because he knows and loves me and realized any other version was impossible. Anyway, the animal control office took down the information and told dad I had to be quarantined for ten days. He said I’m not even allowed to go out front and bring in the newspaper each morning which is absurd since that’s my most important job. As for the strange man, he just disappeared. Despite his evil intentions he got of completely free while I, totally innocent, am stuck in my house for ten days. Dad says that in the old days they used to hang horse thieves and cow thieves. Frankly I think that an even worse punishment should be reserved for dog thieves, after all we are man’s best friend. And quite frankly if dad ever got his hands on that guy he’d probably wish he was just hung. Anyway, I’ll endure my ‘punishment’ since I have no other choice. But I do want to warn you: If you have a dog or other pet you love please don’t leave him or her unattended when you are outside of your home. It’s a dangerous world out there full of strange and evil men.
