Other Software
Minex requires a Java 2-compatible JVM. This is automatically installed during the installation script for
you. Otherwise, the Java 2 JRE, Standard Edition, for the Windows environment is available for download
from http://www.java.com (make sure you download the JRE for all languages).
Installation
You must be logged on as administrator or have administrator privileges. You will have been provided
with an installation CD. This CD contains both the Minex6.1 and the Java runtime environment.
1. Insert the Minex6.1 Installation disc into your CD/DVD drive.
On most computers the installation will start automatically. If this does not happen on your
computer, double click on the MinexInstallation.msi on the CD to start the installation process.

The next window shows the destination directory where the software and the shared files will be
installed.
4. Unless you need to change the default location, click Next to accept the default installation folders.
If you need to change the location of Minex or of the shared files click on the respective Change
button and browse to the folder you wish.
To help you distinguish between versions of Minex, it is recommended that you choose a
destination folder with the same name as the version of Minex you are installing, for example a
destination folder called 61 if you are installing Minex 6.1.

6. If you do want to exclude a component, click the drop-down button beside the component, select
one of the following options and then click Next:
This feature will be installed on local hard drive – This is the normal / default option.
This feature, and all its subfeatures, will be installed on local hard drive – Not
implemented at this time. Please do not use.
This feature will be installed when required – Not implemented at this time. Please do not
use.
This feature will not be available – Use if you decide not to install something.

The installation time will vary, depending on the options you selected in the previous steps.

Towards the end of the installation, the Geostatistics module is automatically installed (if this was one of
the features that you chose to install).
After Minex is installed, the drivers for the security sentinel are installed (unless they were already
installed). You must allow this step to complete to ensure that Minex operates correctly.
A Minex 6.1 icon is copied to your desktop, and a program folder called Gemcom Software is added to
the Taskbar’s Programs list.

Inside the folder there is an icon you can use to start Minex 6.1. This icon looks similar to the following
image:
To run Minex 6.1 you will need a sentinel and a token number (see Licencing for more information). You
can obtain both of these by contacting Minex support for your region.

If you are using a local licence, insert your sentinel into one of the USB ports on your computer.
After doing this, you can run Minex 6.1 by double clicking the desktop icon.
Note: The release notes (<minex install directory>\releaseNotes\MinexReleaseNotes.pdf) contain a detailed
list, and explanations, of all software fixes and enhancements included in the current release.

Licencing Local Licence Setup
Licencing
When you start Minex 6.1 for the first time, the Minex splash screen appears, and then the Licence
Request dialog appears.
Licencing Network Licence Setup
We will then send a return email with a token number, similar to this: c133e93f8539a83a, that you can
use to license the software. Copy the token number into the Token field in the Update Licence Token
dialog, and click Validate.
If the token number you have entered is valid, the field to the right of the Validate button will now show
‘Valid’ and the check boxes in the Licenced Modules panel will be selected according to those modules
that your company is licensed for. The licence file (tokens.dat file) is automatically generated in the
<minex shared files folder>\shared\etc\license folder.
When you click OK, the software finishes loading and is ready for use.
In the Licence Request dialog, select the required licence type, and click Ok.

You must then enter the name of your NLM server and (optionally) the class of licence required.
Licence Classes
Licence classes allow flexibility at sites which have a number of different users. The licence class
mechanism allows an administrator to set up different licence classes for the same product and release
which may have different sets of options or modules enabled.
For example, two Minex 6.1 licence classes might exist, one with options suitable for geologists and the
other with options suitable for surveyors.
To request a specific licence class you can use the -class command line option. If the licence class is
not specified then a default licence class is used.
Most sites do not use multiple licence classes and always use the default class by having the licence
class unspecified.
The advantage of using licence classes on large sites is to reduce the overall cost of the software by
purchasing appropriate software modules for various classes of users.
Licence class names can be any combination of alphanumeric characters.
If licence classes are used at a site, it is entirely up to the administrator which class a licence token must
belong to.
It is bad practice to put more than one token in a licence class, if the tokens have different modules. If this
happens, the user can never be certain what modules they are licensed to use. If you have more than
one token for a single product version, you should always put them in separate licence classes.

Switches Licensing Parameters
Licensing Parameters
By default, Minex will look for a local sentinel and licence first, and then search for a network licence. To
change this order, you must modify the shortcut on the desktop to include the -lm switch. The command
will look something like this:
c:\installdir\bin\Minex.exe -lm
Adding the -lm option to the shortcut ensures that the licence is granted in the minimum time possible.
Using the -lm option like this causes the licence server request to be broadcast to all computers in the
network. Depending on the state of the network and the traffic load in the network this could cause delays
in the granting of a licence. Therefore, for absolute best performance use -lm licenceserver where
licenceserver is the host name or IP address of the computer on which the licence server is running.
For example
c:\ installdir \bin\Minex.exe -lm MinexServer
or
c:\ installdir \bin\Minex.exe -lm 192.168.100.72
If multiple licence servers exist in the network you can make the application client search the licence
servers in order by adding -lm licenceserver1,licenceserver2 to the shortcut. The only other option
you might need to be aware of, is that every server "listens" to the network using a particular port number.
The default port for the NLM is 1234, but it can be any number in the range of 0-65535. If your server has
been configured to use another port (unlikely, but it may be necessary in some cases), you will have to
use the command -lm <servername>:<port number>
Switches
A number of switches are available to configure Minex. To use them, add them to the Target field of the
Minex shortcut. (Right-click on the Minex icon and select Properties. Then select the Shortcut tab).
Switch Description
-java pathname points to the location of the jre on your machine.

Release Notes Licensing Parameters
Switch Description
-java_version version_number indicates the desired version of Java. For example: -java_version 1.6
-user_dir pathname points to your private user directory.
-lm licence_manager the name of your SSILM licence manager – See: Licencing
Parameters.
-class classname the class of your Minex licence – See Licencing Parameters
-Xmx buffer_size Specify the maximum size, in bytes, of the Java memory
allocation pool
This value must be a multiple of 1024 greater than 2MB.
Append the letter k or K to indicate kilobytes, m or M to indicate
megabytes.
The default value is 64MB. Example: -Xmx 128m
Release Notes
These bug fixes and enhancements are divided into their respective releases. If more information is
required on specific bug fixes or enhancements, please contact the Minex support desk via email support
or by phone on your nearest Gemcom office
The release notes can be found in <minex install directory>\releaseNotes\MinexReleaseNotes.pdf.
