Freak the Mighty Essay: Character Sketch

For the essay portion of your Unit Test, you will be allowed to
bring notes, a rough draft or even your final copy of the essay
(your choice) to class on the day of the test to hand in. This will
save you time during the test, and improve the quality of your
essay response.

Your will be writing a CHARACTER SKETCH about either Kevin


(Freak) or Max. The Character Sketch will NOT be a summary of
the story, but rather include as much information as possible
about one specific character.

You will use your study guide questions, the chart in your
notebook, and your knowledge of story to write the essay. When
describing the character, it is important to use PROOF and
DETAILS from the novel.

What you should consider about your character and INCLUDE IN


YOUR ESSAY:

• Gender, age, name, nicknames


• Appearance (physical description)
• Physical and personal strengths and
weaknesses
• Likes and dislikes
• Feelings and behaviors toward other
characters
• Feelings of other characters toward your
character
• Feelings of the character toward himself
• Personality and values at the beginning of the novel
• Changes in personality and values as the story progresses
• Your personal opinion about the character
USE THE CHECKLIST AND EXAMPLE ON THE BACK OF THIS
SHEET AS A GUIDE WHILE CONSTRUCTING YOUR ESSAY.

For extra credit toward your test, you may also bring in a DRAWN character
sketch to supplement your written character sketch.
