Multi Terrain Loaders
Introduction
Work tools have earned skid steer loaders and multi terrain loaders
their reputation for versatility. Cat Work Tools are designed with
an interface that matches the machine’s universal mechanical and
hydraulic quick coupler system for fast, secure work tool changes.
Caterpillar® Skid Steer Loader and Multi Terrain Loader Work Tools
are categorized three ways: 1) fabricated, 2) simple hydraulic, and
3) complex hydraulic. Fabricated work tools are produced from
formed steel plate and special steel sections. Examples include
buckets, forks and material handling arm. These work tools require
no auxiliary hydraulics to operate and are compatible with all
machine models. Simple hydraulic work tools incorporate hydraulic
cylinders for added flexibility when opening and closing a bucket
or grapple, or angling a blade. These include multi purpose buckets,
grapple buckets and forks and angle blades. Simple hydraulic
work tools require a “standard flow” auxiliary hydraulic system
to operate and are compatible with all Caterpillar machine models.
Complex hydraulic work tools are specialized work tools that
incorporate a hydraulic motor, and in some cases hydraulic cylinders
for doing specialized, high-production jobs. Examples include
augers, cold planers, tillers, trenchers, brooms, etc. Complex
hydraulic work tools are available in “standard flow” and “high
flow” configurations. “Standard flow” versions are compatible
with all machine models; “high flow” versions are compatible only
with the skid steer loader “high flow” machines.

Introduction
Ease of Operation
Caterpillar Work Tools are designed with the operator in mind.
Hook-up is easily accomplished for quick, secure work tool
changes with a coupler interface that matches the machine’s
mechanical and hydraulic quick coupler system. Hose routing,
hose length and quick disconnects have been optimized to ensure
proper guiding, protection and fit-up. Steps, produced from slip-
resistant tread material, are conveniently located on each work tool
to facilitate operator entry and exit. Operation of Cat Work Tools
is easy with Cat’s joystick design ... virtually everything is at
your fingertips.
Serviceability
Caterpillar Work Tools use proven components, such as Caterpillar
hydraulic hose, couplings, o-ring face seals, hardware and Ground
Engaging Tools (G.E.T.). Each of these components is easily
replaceable to extend work tool life, simplify servicing and
reduce downtime.
Customer Support
Whether it is matching the right tool to the right job, adding more
work tools to your line-up, or obtaining knowledgeable assistance,
Caterpillar offers total customer support unmatched in the industry.

Multi Terrain Loaders
Introduction
Work tools are vital to the versatility of Compact Construction Work Tool Compatibility
Equipment. Due to the multitude of available AEM and OEM Statement
work tools and compact machines, compatibility questions might
arise. Compatibility is more than proper coupler engagement —
it is the efficient integration and operation of all elements in a
system. Improper compatibility can adversely affect the function
of the work tool and operator safety.
Determining Compatibility
Caterpillar does not recommend the use of Cat Work Tools on non-
Cat machines, nor non-Cat work tools on Caterpillar machines,
unless specifically approved in Caterpillar documentation.
Approved compatibility charts for Cat Work Tools machine-
matched to Caterpillar Compact Machines can be found in the
machine’s Operation and Maintenance Manual and Owner’s
Manual. For additional compatibility issues, please contact
Caterpillar for assistance.

Multi Terrain Loaders
Introduction
• When the machine and work tool are coupled together, can three
points of contact (two hands/one foot or two feet/one hand) be
maintained at entry and exit points?
• Is the work tool structurally matched to the machine? Will the
power or size of one damage the structural integrity of the other?
• For hydraulically actuated work tools, are the hydraulic lines
protected from damage?
• For hydraulically actuated work tools, are the hydraulic lines
wrapped or guarded such that the operator is protected from a
possible hose burst?
• For hydraulically actuated work tools, will the machine’s
auxiliary hydraulic output provide necessary flow and pressure
to optimally perform?
• For hydraulically actuated work tools, will the machine’s
auxiliary hydraulic output exceed the hydraulic capability of the
work tool?
• For hydraulically actuated work tools with electrical requirements,
does the intended machine have a work tool electrical control
package and if so, is it compatible with the work tool?
• When the work tool is coupled to the machine and is in the
transport position, is the weight distribution at least 20 percent
on the rear wheels?
• Is the machine/work tool system stable at all linkage positions or
does the work tool exceed the machine’s rated operating capacity
and require a lift restriction to prevent machine tipping?
• Are all hazards such as crushing, cutting, electrocution,
entanglement and flying objects guarded against where
possible? If not, is a proper warning film in place showing
potential hazards and how to avoid them?
• Are the manufacturer’s operating instructions for both the
machine and work tool available to the operator?
• Are all hydraulic systems clean and free of harmful
contamination?
• Considering all of the prior questions, does the machine/work
tool system provide a safe combination when used by a qualified
operator in accordance with the manufacturer’s operating
instructions?

Backhoes
The Cat Backhoe offers great productivity with its in-cab operator
design. The unique cab-operated control panel allows for effortless
control of the stick, boom and bucket functions. Operators can dig,
excavate, side-shift, and even reposition the machine and backhoe
without ever leaving the seat, which reduces repositioning time
compared with traditional skid steer loader-mounted backhoes.
The machine cab offers safety, comfort and cover from extreme
temperatures or inclement weather conditions, allowing operators
to work for extended periods of time with little fatigue. The arm
bar on the machine provides additional comfort when operating
the backhoe controls.

Backhoes
The center of gravity is set close to the machine’s mounting plate Operator Controls
for superior stability, establishing a secure working platform for
smooth work tool operation. Vertical stabilizers are independently
controlled from the fold-in control panel. Independent adjustment
of the left and right stabilizer allows for proper adjustment of the
work platform.
Control Pattern
The fold-down control with backhoe loader-style controls operates
the boom, stick, buckets, hammers, stabilizers, side-shift lock and

Brooms — Pickup
Both units operate on the Caterpillar Skid Steer and Multi Terrain
Loader’s “standard flow” hydraulics for maximum performance.
The hopper bucket opens wide from the broom for fast, efficient
dumping. When emptying the hopper bucket, simply raise the
broom and dump the bucket. This is accomplished with a dual
chain/loader arm bracket system that holds the brush housing
in the horizontal position. Chains and loader arm brackets are
required to properly empty the hopper bucket.
Cat Pickup Brooms include a drop core design that allows for
quick bristle replacement without requiring hydraulic hoses to be
removed. Standard polypropylene/wire convoluted brushes provide
optimum results for all-purpose sweeping. Optional all-polypropylene
and all-steel wire convoluted brushes are available for specialty
applications. Convoluted brush sections are available through the
Parts system in half-kits for easy maintenance and quick
replacement via parts system.

The BU115 and BU118 are ready to accept optional gutter brush kits
and water sprinkler kits when conditions or regulations require them.
Cat Utility Brooms do not have chain brackets fitted for emptying
debris, so they can be easily moved from one machine to another.
When emptying the bucket hopper, lift and tilt the broom forward
which will allow the debris to fall out of the bucket hopper and
around the brush core. Turning the brush core in the opposite
direction allows debris to be ejected from the bucket hopper.
Cat Utility Brooms include a drop core design that allows for
quick bristle replacement without requiring hydraulic hoses to

Cold Planers
Application Cat Cold Planers are designed for small to medium size paving
jobs in residential and commercial applications. Cold planers are
used to economically restore asphalt and concrete paved surfaces
to a specified grade or level. They are ideal for milling bumps or
imperfections in expanded pavements, removing cracked or
deteriorated pavement, removing traffic lane stripes and working
on jobs where weight restrictions limit the use of dedicated planers.
“Standard flow” cold planers are primarily used for “utility planing”.
They are typically operated at a maximum cutting depth of about
1.5 to 2 in (38 to 51 mm) for asphalt and 0.25 to 0.38 in (6 to 10 mm)
for concrete with the standard drum width; deeper cuts require
multiple passes.

Multi Terrain Loaders
Cold Planers
Caterpillar offers five sizes of cold planers — two “standard flow” Features
models and drum widths — PC203 — 350 mm (14 in) and
PC204 — 450 mm (18 in); and three “high flow” models and drum
widths — PC205 — 450 mm (18 in), PC206 — 600 mm (24 in)
and PC210 — 1000 mm (40 in).
Both the PC203 and PC204 “standard flow” cold planers incorporate
a direct drive system with a variable speed, uni-directional, gerotor-
style hydraulic motor that delivers the right mix of bit speed and
drum torque for efficient cutting performance. The motor mounts
directly to the planer housing. The tapered motor shaft is keyed
to a tapered ductile iron hub, which attaches directly to the drum.
Opposite the motor is a support shaft and roller bearing. The design
allows for quick, easy removal and replacement of the drum
without removing the unit from the machine.
Cat PC205, PC206 and PC210 “high flow” cold planers feature
a planetary drive system with a variable speed, uni-directional,
axial piston style hydraulic motor that mounts directly to a double
reduction gearbox for optimal cutting bit speed and maximum
drum torque for maximum milling performance. The planetary
gearbox is mounted inside the planer drum, enabling the inertia
generated by the drum to dampen load spikes for smoother cutting
operation. Opposite the motor is a support shaft and roller bearing.

Cat Cold Planers are equipped with proven Caterpillar XT-3 ES hose
on the primary flow and return circuits and two braid medium
pressure hose on the side-shift circuit. Cat couplings and o-ring
face seals are utilized throughout the design for superior leak-free
performance and reliability in the toughest conditions. Hose length
and routing have been matched to the machine to ensure proper
protection, guiding and fit-up. Special nylon Cordura sleeving is
standard on all hydraulic hose for additional operator protection.
Hydraulic lines quickly couple to the machine’s “standard flow”
auxiliary hydraulic system with 5/8 in (15.8 mm) flat face
hydraulic quick disconnects.

The hydraulic roller features pure carbide teeth for long life.
The roller’s blunt shaped teeth create a dimpled subsurface to
ensure the best possible seedbed sub-base fracture pattern for
superior moisture retention, and they hold the seed and soil in
place. Slim profile frame bearing ends allow full-depth and
first-pass teeth penetration.

Stump Grinders
Features Caterpillar offers two stump grinders — the SG16B and SG18B —
matched specifically to the machine’s auxiliary hydraulic circuit
and horsepower capabilities for maximum system performance and
reliability. The SG16B is designed to work with “standard flow”
machine auxiliary hydraulics and is ideal for light- to moderate-duty
applications. The SG18B is specifically designed for machines
with “high flow” auxiliary hydraulics and is ideal for moderate- to
heavy-duty applications due to its higher cutting head speed and
drive shaft torque output.
The SG16B and SG18B incorporate a durable direct drive system that
generates high torque output — approximately 218 lb•ft (295 N•m)
of torque at a maximum operating pressure of 3336 psi (230 bar)
on the SG16B, and 346 lb•ft (469 N•m) of torque at an operating
pressure of 4206 psi (290 bar) on the SG18B. A variable speed,
uni-directional high torque, gerotor-style motor is matched to the
machine’s auxiliary hydraulic output — “standard flow” for the SG16B
and “high flow” for the SG18B — for maximum system performance.

The SG16B has two hydraulic lines — and uses proven Cat XT-3 ES
hose on the primary flow and return circuit, and two-braid medium
pressure hose on the swing and extension circuits. Hydraulic lines
quickly couple to the machines’ auxiliary hydraulic system with
5/8 in (15.8 mm) flat face hydraulic quick disconnects.
The SG18B has five hydraulic lines — two for the primary flow
and return circuit, one for the case drain pressure relief, and two
for the multi-function hydraulic circuit — and uses Cat XT-6 ES
hose on the primary flow and return circuits, and two-braid medium
pressure hose on the swing, depth, extension and case drain circuits.
Hydraulic lines quickly couple to the machines’ auxiliary hydraulic
system with 1 in (25.4 mm) flat face hydraulic quick disconnects
on the primary flow and return circuit (“high flow”), and 5/8 in
(15.8 mm) on the multi-function circuit (“standard flow”). On the
“high flow” circuit, hydraulic lines couple to the case drain line
with 1/2 in (12.7 mm) flat face hydraulic quick disconnects.

Trenchers
Application Trenchers are designed for cutting narrow, straight trenches in soil
prior to laying electrical, telephone and cable lines or water and
gas pipe. Machine mounted trenchers are ideal for residential,
commercial, agricultural, building construction, lawn care and
golf course maintenance applications.
Features Caterpillar offers three trenchers — the T6B and T9B with 6, 8,
10 and 12 in (152, 203, 254 and 305 mm) cutting widths and the
T15B with 6, 8, 10 and 12 in (152, 203, 254 and 305 mm) cutting
widths. Cat Trenchers are matched specifically to the machine’s
auxiliary hydraulic circuit and horsepower capabilities for maximum
system performance and reliability. The T6B and T9B are designed
to work with “standard flow” machine auxiliary hydraulics and are
best suited for general trenching in moderate soils. The T15B is
specifically designed for machines with “high flow” auxiliary
hydraulics and is making it ideal for trenching in soils with higher
digging resistance.

Trenchers
The T6B, T9B and T15B incorporate a durable direct drive system
that generates high torque output — approximately 1068 lb•ft
(1447 N•m) of torque at a maximum operating pressure of 3300 psi
(227 bar) on the T6B and T9B, and 2144 lb•ft (2905 N•m) of
torque at a maximum operating pressure of 4500 psi (310 bar)
on the T15B. A variable speed, bi-directional high torque, gerotor-
style motor, matched to the machine’s auxiliary hydraulic output,
delivers optimal chain speed, chain pull and torque for maximum
trenching performance in a broad range of soil types.
Caterpillar Trenchers are available with the chain installed from the
factory in twenty-one different chain type and width configurations
to meet specific digging applications. See “Chain Configurations”
for more information. One of the most popular chain configurations
is the standard cup which incorporates hardfaced, tungsten carbide
steel cupped teeth which provide long life in many soil conditions.
Teeth are arranged in single standard pattern spacing to provide
optimum digging performance in most soil types. All base chains
are durable double standard anti-back flex type, which eliminates
chain backlash and ensures cutting teeth are positioned at the most
efficient angle for smooth cutting and longer tooth life in all soil types.
The T6B and T9B have two hydraulic lines — and uses proven
Cat XT-3 hose on the primary flow and return circuit, and if
equipped, two-braid medium pressure hose on the side-shift circuit.
Hydraulic lines quickly couple to the machines’ auxiliary hydraulic
system with 5/8 in (15.8 mm) flat face hydraulic quick disconnects.

All Caterpillar chain configurations are comprised of a 2 in (51 mm)
pitch anti-back flex (ABF) chain specifically designed to eliminate
chain backlash with the cutting tooth positioned at the most efficient
angle for smooth cutting and extended tooth life. Caterpillar
Replacement Tooth Groups and Chain Assemblies are available
