Patrick Dyer Mr.

Pirkle FYS 1000-02 19 October 2010 CHAPEL SERVICE

Today, Dr. Werner spoke in Chapel about whether or not homosexuality is morally wrong. He mentioned beforehand that he had many copies of his pamphlet ³Is Homosexuality Morally Wrong.´ He generally stated that homosexuality is a sin but that we must not condemn homosexuals for their behavior because it is not Christ-like. Werner talked about his brother-inlaw who was gay but married a woman anyway. He later confessed his same-sex attractions and divorced his wife and lost his family. Werner says that if he had confessed his same-sex attractions and had gotten help, this whole crisis would have been avoided. Personally, as an advocate for gay rights, I found this sermon to be misled. Dr. Werner had good intentions by saying that we should not condemn homosexuals but I thought that what he said about how they are sinners and should be purified by God was not appropriate. Even if homosexuals are sinners, but so is everyone else in the world. If you have done anything that falls into the category of sin (lying, cheating, sexual sin, murder, etc.) then we all deserve to die as punishment. But the message of Christ was that He loved everyone, regardless of race, religion, cultural background, and even sexual orientation. Who are we to make statements such as ³Homosexuals are sinners and should be purified´ or ³God does not approve of their lifestyle´? Matthew 7:1 says ³Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and the measure you use, it will be used to measure you´

¶´ ~Matthew 22:37-40 NIV~ . And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. Besides. He makes every single person in the world different in order to teach us to love each other regardless of those differences. it is not. Is this an easy task? No. He would have made everyone straight. Because of this unconditional love. That is what the Lord wants from us above all else. This is the first and greatest commandment. I should care about a person enough to respect who they are and not try to change them in any way. Does this mean that I have never judged anyone? Of course not. I do not believe in trying to change a person¶s sexual orientation. if God wanted everyone to be straight. we should try and live our lives as best as we can while loving each other unconditionally. we¶re all guilty of that at least. µLove the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.(NIV). But it is something that we should strive for. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these commandments. ³And Jesus replied. But instead of trying to ³purify´ the homosexual community.
