SARATOGA ARTS ANNOUNCES: BUS TRIP TO PHILADELPHIA FLOWER SHOW AND THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART March 5 and 6, 2011. The group will visit the Chagall exhibit
at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, “Paris through the Window: Marc Chagall and His Circle.” The Philadelphia Flower Show’s theme is “Springtime in Paris,” is a tip of the beret to the world’s most
popular tourist destination. “From the Moulin Rouge to the Musee d’Orsay, Paris intrigues and entertains like no other city,” said Show Designer Sam Lemheney. Featured displays will draw from the
Louvre; the Musee d’Orsay; artists such as Renoir, Monet, and van Gogh; modern art collections of the Georges Pompidou National Center for Art and Culture; and the beloved Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise.
Saturday night the group will stay at the highly comfortable Hilton Garden Inn and enjoy a full American breakfast buffet early on Sunday. The hotel is located literally steps away from the Philadelphia
Flower Show The trip package price is $377 per person based on double occupancy and includes motor-coach transportation, overnight accommodation, full breakfast, entrance fees to the Museum and

BATTENKILL CHORALE SIXTEENTH ANNIVERSARY SEASON. The Battenkill Chorale,

Janet McGhee Artistic Director, opens its sixteenth anniversary season with Franz Joseph
Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass January 29th and 30th, both at 3pm, at St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church, 35 Hill Street, Greenwich, NY. The 110-voice Chorale and professional orchestra will be
joined by soloists Gene Marie Callahan, Susan Hermance Fedak, Andy Truex, and Keith Kibler.
Also on the program is a cappella music by Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, and Sergei
Rachmaninoff. Tickets for this concert are $15 and can be reserved by calling (518) 692-8093 or
emailing judith.kleinberg@yahoo.com. Due to circumstances beyond our control, St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church is not handicap accessible in winter.
The Battenkill Chorale’s Spring concerts May 7th and 8th will feature Jewish and American
music in preparation for a summer choral tour to Prague and Vienna. The Chorale has been given
special permission to give a memorial recital at Terezin concentration camp as well as a concert at
one of the Josefov synagogues in Prague. Haydn Lord Nelson Mass soprano soloist Gene Marie
Callahan made her operatic debut at Chicago Lyric Opera and an international debut in Graz,
Austria. She has sung leading roles with some of the world’s finest conductors including James
Levine and sung in performance with artists including Renata Scotto and Sherrill Milnes. Born
in Glens Falls, Ms. Callahan trained in New York City, Chicago, and France. She teaches voice at
Skidmore College and the Emma Willard School and maintains a private voice and piano studio.
Alto Susan Hermance Fedak has appeared with the Berkshire Lyric Theatre, the Glens Falls
Symphony, and the Lake George Opera Company, and been soloist with many of the Capital
District’s choral ensembles. A resident of Albany, Ms. Fedak is a voice instructor at The College
of St. Rose and is Associate Minister of Music and Arts at Westminster Presbyterian Church,
Director of the Saratoga Children’s Chorus, and Assistant Conductor of the Burnt Hills Oratorio
Society.
Tenor Andy Truex has made numerous opera and solo concert appearances in Colorado and
Indiana in addition to his solo work in the Capital District. He has appeared with with the
Colorado and Aurora Symphony Orchestras, Colorado Light Opera, Indianapolis Opera, and
recipient of the Joel Doven Vocal Award from the Albany mendelssohn Club. Mr. Truex is also
a voce instructor at Williams College and Outreach Coordinator for Resonanz, an Albany festival
for singers.
Bass-baritone Keith Kibler made his national debuts at the age of twenty-four with the Opera
Theatre of St. Louis and the Boston Symphony under Seiji Ozawa. He has sung leading opera
roles and appeared in concert internationally with artists including Jon Humphrey and Elly
Ameling. Twice a Fellow of the Tanglewood Music Center, Keith Kibler’s doctorate was earned
at Yale University and the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Kibler teaches in the music department
of Williams College and also lectures frequently at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

HOW SHOULD WASHINGTON COUNTY HANDLE ‘WASTE’ GENERATED IN THE COUNTY?

Public Input Meetings on January 18 and 20 Will Help the County Decide.
In 2008, New Yorkers sent 4.1 pounds of municipal solid waste per person per day to disposal facilities. Through planning,
NYS hopes to reduce this disposal number to 0.6 pounds per person per day by 2030. All planning units within the State
such as Washington County are expected to develop their own baseline and progressive disposal reduction plan that is
called the Local Solid Waste Management Plan (LSWMP). All County plans are required to incorporate NY State goals of
preventing waste generation, increasing reuse and recycling, composting and other organic material recycling while embodying
sound principles of solid waste management, natural resources conservation, energy production, and employment creating
opportunities. The local plan must answer numerous questions, including: what role and actions Washington County
should take in regard to solid waste disposal, recycling, composting, household hazardous waste etc.
The State plan is called Beyond Waste and was finalized in December 2010. Washington County’s first and only Local
Solid Waste Management Plan, was done jointly with Warren County and dates back to 1991.
The County Board of Supervisors are using this state planning requirement as an opportunity to take a look at how ‘trash’
has been, is and will be handled in the county. Thus the Washington County Board of Supervisors selected the Recycling
Advisory Board (RAB), an advisory group that was appointed in 2009, to draft the County’s Local Solid Waste Management
Plan. Since taking on this solid waste plan assignment, the RAB has conducted surveys and analyzed data and programs,
especially those in other rural New York counties. The group is still weighing the recommendations it will make to the
Board ofSupervisors.
The RAB will hold two public meetings to get input from residents, businesses, and other stakeholders on the County’s
best course of action in dealing with its solid waste. Anyone who generates waste, or provides services related to solid
waste, recyclables, organics, construction and demolition waste, hazardous waste, etc., qualifies as a stakeholder. This
input will assist the Recycling Advisory Board in developing a stronger Local Solid Waste Management Plan. These public
meetings will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 18 in the Granville High School Auditorium and on Thursday, Jan. 20 in the
Greenwich High School Cafeteria. Both meetings will be from 6 to 8 p.m. The Recycling Advisory Board encourages all
citizens to attend and share their concerns, make recommendations and pose questions.
Current members of the Recycling Advisory Board include: supervisors Alan Brown (Jackson), Dana Haff (Hartford), Sara
Idleman (Greenwich), and Bob Henke (Argyle); citizens Andrew Pate (Cambridge), Robbie McIntosh (Cambridge), Jayme
Wood (Easton), and Geoffrey Ovington (Jackson); and county public works superintendent Dick Wilson.
