Product Handling Guide

Glacial Acetic Acid
CAS No. 64-19-7
Description Glacial acetic acid is a common ingredient for the manufacturing of a wide range of chemicals and products. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent, vinegar-like odor. Glacial acetic acid is extremely corrosive and flammable and, as such, requires special storage and handling considerations. Glacial acetic acid causes severe chemical burns to eyes and skin. Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling the product. Train all personnel on the hazards of glacial acetic acid prior to handling. • • • • • Use product only in areas with appropriate ventilation. Keep product vapor away from heat, flame and ignition sources. Use proper electrical grounding when loading, unloading and transferring product. Wear personal protective equipment to prevent contact with skin and eyes as well as inhalation of product vapors. Glacial acetic acid freezes at 62°F (16.7°C). Use extreme care when applying heat to thaw out product to prevent personal injury, spill and equipment damage.

Safety and Handling

More detail safety and disposal information on our products is contained in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). All users of our products are urged to retain and use the MSDS. You may request a copy by going to our web site: www.lyondellbasell.com. You can also obtain an MSDS through our MSDS Hotline at (800) 700-0946 (toll-free – U.S. and Canada) or (713) 309-7513 (all other regions). Storage • • • • • Keep product containers tightly closed and stored in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. To avoid ignition of vapors by static electricity discharge, all metal parts of the equipment must be grounded. In the USA, refer to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) #77 “Static Electricity” for proper electrical grounding procedures. Isolate from oxidizers, caustics and alkalis, chemicals capable of spontaneous heating, ignition sources and explosives. Dry nitrogen blanketing of storage tanks is highly recommended to prevent contamination of product. Electrical installations should be in accordance with local applicable laws and regulations. In the USA, refer to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) #30 “Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code” and consult with qualified specialists to determine specific storage tank requirements. Store glacial acetic acid above 65oF (18.3°C) to protect from freezing. Use engineering controls to minimize product vapor releases from storage tanks. A water scrubbing system is an effective method to remove glacial acetic acid vapors. Install containment around storage tank to prevent release of product to environment in cases of uncontrolled spills and tank failure.
