JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: LGBTQ Field Organizer – Western PA Supervisor: Delta Foundation- Advocacy Chair Location: Pittsburgh
PA/ Western PA Background: There has long been a need to increase constituent participation in the legislative process by issue advocacy throughout Western Pennsylvania. We frequently hear from legislators that on matters important to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community: they do not hear from supporters about these issues. Three factors influence increasing advocacy of this type: finding individuals who are interested in engaging with their elected official, providing adequate training on how to be effective at issue advocacy, and providing adequate follow up and support to individuals who become engaged in advocacy efforts. In addition, the development of a strong and effective network of organizations and individuals through out Western PA needs to be developed, so that groups may work cooperatively, and individuals can feel connected to a larger effort, especially those in a rural area who may feel isolated. In the past, a state-wide approach has been attempted to meet these needs, but has proven to be unsuccessful. Our goal is to focus efforts within a limited geographic area to meet these four specific needs. Through this project we aim to: • Develop a strong and effective network of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and supportive ally organizations and individuals throughout Western PA. • Identify individuals throughout the 23 counties that make up Western PA who have an interest and can become engaged in issue advocacy. • Provide training and resources to individuals and organizations on methods of issue advocacy. • Provide follow-up and support to individuals and organizations so that they can apply these methods of issue advocacy so that there is an increase in constituent engagement.
