First Time Setup for Microsoft Outlook Express


This document describes how to set up Microsoft Outlook Express to access your mail . To use it, you will need:

● A e-mail account with password


● A PC computer with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Outlook Express
● A working Internet connection

First-time Setup

1. Open Microsoft Outlook Express.

2. Go to the Tools menu on your menu bar and select Accounts.

3. A new window will appear. Click the Add button and choose Mail.

4. The next screen asks for your name. Enter your full name in the Display name field. Click Next.

5. The next screen asks for your e-mail address. Enter your email address into the E-mail address field. Click Next.

6. The next screen asks for your mail servers.

● Select POP3 as your incoming mail server from the drop down menu.
● In the Incoming mail server field type: mail.yourdomainname
● In the Outgoing mail server field type: mail.yourdomainname

When you are finished, click Next.

7. The next screen asks for your logon information, for your Rice username and password in their respective fields.

● Enter your username into the Account Name field (the first part of your e-mail address without @yourdomainname).
● Enter your password into the Password field.
● You may activate or deactivate the Remember Password check box based on your preference. If choose to leave the
Remember Password box unchecked, Outlook will prompt you for your e-mail password each time you start Outlook. If
you check the box, Outlook will remember your password even if you quit Outlook.
● DO NOT activate Secure Password Authentication as it may cause problems with your mail.

When you are finished, click Next.

8. Click Finish.

9. Go back to the Tools menu on your menu bar and select Accounts.

10. Click on the account entry labeled yourdomainname and then click the Properties button.

11. Select the second tab, Servers. Click the checkbox My server requires authentication. Then click on the Settings button.

12. Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server and click OK.

13. Select the tab Advanced. There are two check boxes asking if This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).
Make sure that both boxes are checked. There are also two fields for numbers indicating the server port numbers.

● In the Incoming Server (IMAP) port number box, type: 993.


● In the Outgoing Server (SMTP) port number box, type: 465.
