BÌLL: An email from "Melanie" tells us she's 5'5" and weighs 284 pounds. "Drunks and
drug addicts,¨ she writes, ¨have the consolation that people understand their affliction is
beyond simple will power. But tell people you're addicted to food? They just laugh at you.¨
Dave, maybe you'll have to mark me down as one of those laughers. Ìf a meth addict
can't get her drug of choice, she'll go for pot, speed or booze. Anything "mood-altering"
will do. But people like Melanie are never addicted to broccoli or raw carrots, are they?
DR. DAVE: Well, a lot of scientists are on your side. John Banzhaf, of George Washington
University Law School in Washington DC, masterminded the anti-Big Tobacco crusade.
Ìn 2003, when he turned his attention to a parallel ¨scientific¨ war on Big Fat, many
addiction researchers said he had outrun the facts.
BÌLL: Ì remember lawsuits of that era against McDonalds, with a federal judge ultimately
tossing those Big Mac attackers out of court due to a lack of verifiable research on the
addictive properties of fast food.
DR. DAVE: One University of Wisconsin researcher summed it up very ably: "Addiction is
kind of a vague term, and we obviously can't say that we've proven that you can become
addicted to food," he told the Obesity Policy Report.
BÌLL: To be fair, let me quote another authority. ¨Most of society thinks that if you're
overweight, it's a matter of not being disciplined, of not being able to push away from the
table,¨ says Mary Jo Rapini, a licensed professional counselor and psychotherapist at
the Methodist Weight Management Center, who does believe that people can be addicted
to foods. Rapini says most of her clients are weight-loss surgery patients, but surgery
will not ¨cure¨ them of any food addiction.
DR. DAVE: Rather than argue about labels, Bill, perhaps it would be more useful to talk
about how overeaters can understand their problem and take steps to stop. That self-
awareness begins with identifying food that addicts binge on - foods that cause cravings
- that disrupt the cellular receptor sites in the body.
BÌLL: And if you do try to stop, cause withdrawal and control problems too?
DR. DAVE: There are three identified groups: refined carbohydrates and sugars, foods
that taste sweet (even sugar substitutes like saccharine) and saturated fats. Those are
the core addictive foods.
BÌLL: Just as there are drinks and then there are ¨Drinks¨. Ìn other words, broccoli is to
cake as Perrier water is to Kentucky Bourbon. Ì have to say that makes some sense,
though Ì've never heard food addiction specialists talk about receptor sites like drug
addiction counselors do.

DR. DAVE: Ìronically, the term ¨receptor sites¨ was named by early researchers in food
addiction. They identified parallels in diabetics and drug abusers by tracking glucose
paths to receptors after carbohydrate binges, much in the same way they saw abusable
drugs effect opiate and dopamine flows to receptors.
BÌLL: When an over-eating reader wrote us for help last year, you recommended she pick
up a copy of Kay Sheppard೦a>೦೦s book, "Food Addiction: The Body Knows." Ìs that
still your recommendation?
DR. DAVE: Ìt certainly is. Along with a standard recommendation Ì make for most quick
health references on the Ìnternet - go online to WebMD. They have the uncanny ability to
put all the useful information on one simple page, like this section on Food Addiction.
BÌLL: For me, WebMD zeroed right into what Ì'd call the Big Five of addictive food
behavior:
1. Have Ì tried but failed to control my eating?
2. Do Ì find myself hiding food or secretly bingeing?
3. Do Ì have feelings of guilt or remorse after eating?
4. Do Ì eat because of emotions?
5. Ìs my weight affecting my way of life?
DR. DAVE: Ì like their advice for starting food detoxification too, but it also should be clear
from your Big Five that a reader could work with their primary care physician and an
established addiction agency to break the compulsion and begin to incorporate a
different pattern of food intake.
BÌLL: With a healthy dose of weekly Overeaters Anonymous meetings, too.
