Anti-Racism & Marginalized Persons Equity Petition
to the Lewiston School District, Lewiston, Idaho
As parents and allies of students of racial and ethnic minorities and otherwise marginalized populations,
we present the following outcome expectations for the Lewiston School District, specifically the school
board and administration, in order to meet the goal of emotional and physical safety in the educational
environment for all students regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, and disability.
Outcome Expectations
Outcome #1: Develop and release a district wide anti-racism and racial equity statement that addresses
the needs of marginalized populations. This statement should inform policy and direction and be posted
publicly online and in district buildings.
Completion Date: August 2020 (prior to the Fall 2020 start date).

Outcome #2: Ban hate speech and symbols as described by the Anti-Defamation League, including, but
not limited to the Confederate flag, swastikas, Nazi symbols, use of the ‘N-word,’ and publish specific
and appropriate disciplinary procedures for offenses.
Completion Date: August 2020 (prior to the Fall 2020 semester start date).
Outcome #3: Develop an anti-discrimination policy that specifically addresses racial harassment and
discrimination, including appropriate disciplinary procedures for offenses. Provide an electronic process
through which students, staff, and parents can anonymously report bullying, harassment, and racial,
gender, and other issues regarding otherwise marginalized students.
Completion Date: January 2021 (prior to the Spring 2021 semester start date).
Outcome #4: Mandatory yearly training in anti-racism, implicit bias, cultural competency, and inclusive
practices for all district employees.
Utilize resources from the Southern Poverty Law Center, National Education Association, Center
for Racial Justice in Education, Anti-Defamation League, or other nationally recognized
organizations who are doing this training.
Completion Date: January 2021 (prior to the spring 2021 semester start date) & ongoing.
Outcome #5: Implement a full independent review of district-wide curriculum for cultural
responsiveness, historical accuracy, representation, and implicit bias. Make improvements to curriculum
as recommended.
Completion Date: Implemented or planned by June 2021; Completed prior to fall 2022.
Outcome #6: Assign or hire a qualified & trained district employee who is responsible for racial equity
and cultural responsiveness.
Completion Date: June 2021.
Should these expectations not be implemented within the timeframes indicated, we will continue seeking
guidance from the Idaho American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the U.S. Department of Education
under the Idaho State Department of Education Civil Rights Division, the United States Department of
Justice, and the local NAACP chapter to ensure that the district has specific policies and procedures in
place that address the needs of all students.
