SAFETY AND HEALTH It is the individual s responsibility to practice the following general safety guidelines at all times: 3.1 3.2 3.3 3.4 3.5 3.6 Always know the hazards associated with the materials that are being utilized in the lab. Always wear appropriate protective clothing. Confine long hair and loose clothing. Do not wear high-heeled shoes, open-toed shoes, sandals, or shoes made of woven material. Always wash hands and arms with soap and water before leaving the work area. Never perform unauthorized work, preparations or experiments. Be familiar with the location of emergency equipment fire alarm, fire extinguisher, emergency eye wash and safety shower. Known the appropriate emergency response procedure.
THEORY The ordinary impact machine has a swinging pendulum of fixed weight which is raised to a standard height depending upon the type of specimen tested. At that height, with reference to the vise, the pendulum has a definite amount of potential energy. When the pendulum is released this energy is converted to kinetic energy until it strikes the specimen. The charpy specimen will be hit behind the V notch, while the Izod specimen, placed with the V notch facing the pendulum, will be hit above the V notch. The energy for the pendulum is 120 J and the velocity of the hit is 3.5 meter per second. The Izod test piece is clamped vertically in Izod support anvils, fitted on the base of the machine. The support is provided with a machined vertical groove to suit the test piece size. The front clamp piece &allen screw enable clamping of the test piece in correct height with the help of Izod setting gauge supplied.
