Title of Presentation: Relationship between Crude Properties and Demulsifier Performance

Authors (please list all): Amrit Kaur

Abstract:
Emulsion is highly undesired and it poses a major challenge in upstream petroleum industry. The
undesirable well head water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions drastically increase the viscosity of oil and
dramatically increase the pumping cost, enhance corrosion, reduce throughput and can lead to
equipment failure. Water in crude oil reduces efficiency of vessels due to limited space besides
reducing the oil recovery which leads to environmental concern as oil content will be present in
effluent water. The API gravity gets affected and due to the salt content present, the market value
of crude reduces. Chemical demulsification method is employed due to the low operational cost
and space required. Due to the vast range of different types of crude oils and the EOR process
conditions, the development and selection of effective demulsifiers for regional crude oils has
been time consuming and a tedious process. This experimental study is proposed to define
relationship between crude characteristics of wax, asphaltene and crude API with RSN and cloud
point properties of demulsifiers with its performances accordingly. 16 different types of
demulsifiers with RSN ranges from eleven (11) to twenty one (21) were tested using demulsifier
bottle test. The demulsifiers comprises of resin alkoxylate, modified polyol and polyimine
derivative.Synthetic crude is used throughout the study with API of 27,34,37 and 40. The wax
and asphaltene contents of each crude API is varied. The study used 2% NaCl water representing
average salinity of the produced water in Malaysian offshore fields. Demulsification test
conducted using 50:50 ratio in term of the crude and brine volume.100ppm demulsifier dosed
into emulsion mixture and the separation is monitores and recorded after 5 minutes time. The
demulsifier bottle test is performed at 60 degree celcius which is similar to the operating
temperature of demulsifier injection in Malaysian offshore field. Based on the results obtained,
resin alkoxylate showed the best performance while polyimine derivative based demulsifier had
the poorest performance. Based on the three chemistry groups, demulsifier with high RSN which
is from 19 to 21 work best in resolving the emulsion compared to the low RSN demulsifiers.

Keywords: emulsion ; wax content ; crude API; demulsifier chemistry; demulsifier performance
