RESEARCH IN DAILY LIFE 2 ABM-RESEARCH II

LEARNING ACTIVITY PLAN 1
Nature of Inquiry and
Research
1.1 What is Quantitative
Research?
1.2 The Characteristics of
Quantitative Research
AT THE END OF THE LEARNING EXPERIENCES, THE
LEARNER WILL BE ABLE TO:

Define quantitative research;

Describe the uses of quantitative research design;
Articulate the quantitative research works;
Provide examples of when quantitative research
methodology should be used
DISCUSSION
Once you’ve learned about Research, you’ll find out a lot of things.
Research is everywhere and continuously improving. During your Grade 11,
Research focuses on the Qualitative aspect. Now that in this pace primarily
you will be focusing and enlightening yourself about the value of Quantitative
Research. Having research is quite challenging but once you distinguish and
value the aspect of Quantitative you will explicitly love and give much
importance in creating a Quantitative type of research. Thus, the question now
is: Are you ready to gain knowledge about quantitative research?
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH IS A SYSTEMATIC
INVESTIGATION OF OBSERVABLE PHENOMENA WHERE
THE RESEARCHER GATHERS QUANTITATIVE OR NUMERICAL
DATA AND SUBJECTS THEM TO STATISTICAL METHODS.
QUANTITATIVE METHODS

are used to examine the relationship between

variables with the primary goal being to analyze
and represent that relationship mathematically
through statistical analysis. This is the type of
research approach most commonly used in scientific
research problems.
MAIN GOALS OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
are to test hypotheses, explore causal
relationships, make predictions, and generalize the
findings within a population.
Generalizability refers to the extent to which the
findings not only represent the samples but also the
population at large.
FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF CHARACTERISTICS
AND ADVANTAGES OF USING QUANTITATIVE
METHODS:
A. The data collected is numeric, allowing for collection of data
from a large sample size.
B. Statistical analysis allows for greater objectivity when
reviewing results and therefore, results are independent of the
researcher.
C. Numerical results can be displayed in graphs, charts, tables,
and other formats that allow for better interpretation.
D. Data analysis is less time-consuming and can often be done
using statistical software.
E. Results can be generalized if the data are based on random
samples and the sample size was sufficient.
F. Data collection methods can be relatively quick, depending
on the type of data being collected.
G. Numerical quantitative data may be viewed as more
credible and reliable, especially to policymakers, decision-makers,
and administrators.
There are a variety of quantitative methods and sampling
techniques that will be discussed in detail in the other modules in
this unit. However, following are examples of research questions
where quantitative methods may be appropriately applied:
HOW QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH WORKS:

Step one:
Observing and explaining occurrences.
This can be presented in the form
of a question. Hypotheses, explanation
Should be made whether to
prove or disproved.
Step two:
The collection information
in quantitative research.
Focused specifically on
numerical information, also
known as “data.”
Step three: Using
Mathematics.
Done with the use of
statistics, analyze the data
collected.
FOLLOWING ARE EXAMPLES OF RESEARCH
QUESTIONS WHERE QUANTITATIVE METHODS
MAY BE APPROPRIATELY APPLIED:
1. How often do college students between the ages of 20-24 access Facebook?
2. What is the difference in the number of calories consumed between male and female
high school students?
3. What percentage of married couples seek couples counseling?
4. What are the top 5 factors that influence a student’s choice of college or university?
5. How many organized sports activities has the average 10-year-old child competed in?
The collection of numerical data through quantitative research methods lends itself well to
large variety of research questions.
