Supplementary Reading Project

For the next ten weeks, you will be required to read a novel (beyond the novels assigned in class) on your own and complete assigned projects to demonstrate your understanding of it. Every Tuesday and Thursday you will have 20 to 25 minutes of class time to read your novel. The rest of the reading must be done on your own, on your own time. All projects will be due by Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Mark Breakdown:

1) Read and Record Accurately:     Read and record the information on your Supplementary Reading If you read at home, have your reading log confirmed by a member of your household (preferably a parent/guardian) When you read in class, have a classmate sign your reading sheet In-school reading will be between 40 and 50 minutes a week. This will equal a grade of 5. If you would like to increase your mark, read at home! • • • • • 20 to 90 minutes at home and your mark is raised to a 6 91 to 149 minutes at home = 7 150 to 249 minutes at home = 8 250 to 399 minutes at home = 9 400+ minutes at home = 10

2) Composition of Book Letter:    You are asked to create a book response in the form of a letter. Your book letter should be two pages double spaced. This letter should include: • • • • • • The titles and authors of any materials you have read A brief plot summary (no more than 3 sentences) Identifies and supports with evidence your feelings and reactions about what you have read Explains the connections you have made to what you have read Shows that you have a clear understanding of the themes in your readings Gives evidence of some of the writing techniques and styles you have encountered in your novels

3) Presentation of Book:    You are asked to give a book talk about your book You may only use 50 words (no more, no less) to describe your book You may arrange your words in either a sentence form, or a string of descriptive words that convey an impression of the book Your presentation will be memorized

4) Composition of a Poem:  You are asked to compose a short poem indicating exactly what mark (%) you think you deserve for your Supplementary Reading efforts this term Any questions about forms and conventions of poetry can be asked of Ms. Lenihan
