Dear Prof Waters, I wish to apply for the PhD project in Genome Stability, cell senescence and the

cell cycle as advertised on Cardiff University website. This an ideal PhD project for me given my enthusiasm in the cell cycle process and my relevant qualifications and practical experiences. I find cell cycle very fascinating topic because of its complexity, range of proteins that are involved in regulating the process that depend on the precise duplication of chromosomal DNA in each cell and the expression of different cyclins and range proteins at each stages of the cell cycle. The aspects of cell cycle that I find interesting are the signals that give the cell license to proliferate, the signals involved in inducing the cell to enter cell senescence and how shortening of the telomerase forms a barrier to unlimited cell division and how it eventually leads to cell death. My interest in cell cycle was stimulated when we covered cell cycle and cell senescence in relation to cancer in Advanced Medical Biochemistry module. I have also covered cell cycle in my previous degree in Biochemistry. From this PhD I would like to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the cell cycle and cell senescence process involved and techniques and methodologies used to identify and study the cell cycle. This PhD studentship will allow me to develop transferable and professional skills appropriate to the career path as a scientist. I am a full-time student at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff doing an MSc in Biomedical Sciences (Medical Biochemistry). I received an honours degree in Biochemistry at the University of York in 2005. As you can see from my C.V I have acquired knowledge and practical skills in a range of techniques, which are relevant to this project. Working as a summer student in my lecturer’s lab for 2 months gave me an opportunity to improve my laboratory skills and the ability to work independently. I consider myself an enthusiastic, self motivated and a determined individual and I look forward to academic and social challenges posed by this PhD programme. I am aware of the demands of the PhD programme but my commitment and dedication will allow me to accomplish any goals. I have attached my C.V for your perusal and please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Geetha
