New SEZs to come up in Gujarat
The Government of Gujarat is planning to build two Special Economic Zones to enhance investment possibilities in the state. The Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation in its pre-feasibility study has identified Dahej for SEZ at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore. A proposal has already been moved for clearance to the Union commerce ministry. This was informed by GIDC Managing Director Hasmukh Adhia. The SEZ at Dahej on 1,700 hectares of land is likely to be constructed with the help of private participation. The area already has majors like IPCL, Gujarat Alkalies and Gujarat Chemical Port Terminal Company Ltd, and Petronet is likely to join the bandwagon. But for the other SEZ at Hazira, the minimum requirement of 1,000 hectares of land is yet to be acquired and because of this hindrance, the SEZ project has not taken any shape. "But we are in the process of a breakthrough," Adhia confidently said. Hazira is the hub of many business entities and an SEZ here will be a booster to the new entrants as well. If these two SEZs come into existence, it will join the already existing two SEZs in the state, Sachin in Surat and Kandla in Kachchh, which are already functional. The privately run Mundra SEZ is likely to be cleared by the state government shortly.
