Station One: Boyle

B1. “Pneumatical engine”

Carefully slide the glass dome off the stage. Put a “Peep” onto the stage (but not
over the hole) and put the dome back over it. Turn on the pump and observe.
When finished, release pressure by removing the stopper in the glass dome and
throw your Peep away.

violated our lab rules!) P1V1 = P2V2

B2. Vinegar & ground coral

Take a small pea-sized scoop of ground coral and place in test tube; pipette out
5.00 mL of vinegar and release into test tube with ground coral; observe

L1. “Burning” metal
Light Bunsen burner as demonstrated by your instructor; burn magnesium;
observe through cobalt blue glass.

L2. Breakdown metal oxide

Place a pea-sized scoop of lead(IV) oxide carefully into a test tube (wash hands
if you get it on them); light Bunsen burner as demonstrated by your instructor;
heat test tube as demonstrated by your instructor until you observe changes;
place hot test tube in glass beaker.

into molecules of oxygen gas.
Station Three: Davy

D2. Decomposing water with electricity

Observe - do not touch

D5. Discovering iodine: sublimation

Place a few iodine crystals in the warm beaker; place watch glass over beaker
and put a few pieces of ice in it; observe; remove beaker from hot plate and set
aside; place another beaker on hot plate for next group.

S3. Distillation

Observe - do not touch. Distillation is a method of separating mixtures based

on differences in their volatilities in a boiling liquid mixture.
