Changing lives since 1955
How one man’s vision changed the lives of over a million students
The Bell story began over half a century ago when a young British army officer – Lieutenant Frank Bell – was captured as a prisoner of war. Confronting the daily hardship and boredom of prison life, Frank began teaching his fellow prisoners Spanish and French, a simple act of defiance that quickly led to the creation of a secret university right there in the harsh conditions of the prison camp. After the war, Frank Bell returned to England where, reflecting on his experiences, he became convinced that the route to international co-operation and understanding lay in learning. This led him, in 1955, to open his first language school in Cambridge which still operates today. Although Frank might be a little surprised at the size of the Bell organisation today – over 37 teaching centres in 16 countries, teaching over 100,000 students from more than 120 countries each year – he would certainly recognise the quality philosophy which has been at the heart of what we do for over 55 years. That is because at Bell our goal remains a simple one: to change lives around the world by offering people learning experiences that will remain with them forever. As we face increasing change in the world today, it remains as true as ever that investing in your education will bring priceless and lifelong rewards. Whatever your language goals – in life, work or education – in Bell you have a partner committed to help you achieve them. We look forward to welcoming you to a Bell centre in 2011.

How has Bell changed your life?

First Bell class, 1955

Did your experience at Bell change your life? Did you secure a top job, a place at university or form lifelong friendships with fellow students? If so, we would love to hear from you. Tell us your story at www.bell-centres.com

“I want to study History and English so I’d like to feel comfortable with the language – reading, writing and speaking. The teachers have different ways of motivating and teaching you. My study experience
Young Goo, 39, from Korea
“I work in insurance, which is a global industry, so business English skills are very important. Presentations, negotiating, making a contract, handling complaints – for these kinds of tasks you have to use a different language and vocabulary. I particularly want to upgrade my listening skills, so my 1 to 1 teacher is helping me focus on that. I can ask him lots of questions and he helps me correct my mistakes.”

Working with your own personal teacher, you will identify the specific language areas and skills that you wish to improve and together create a weekly programme to help you achieve your language goals. Other 1 to 1 course lengths can be arranged. 2 to 1 courses can also be arranged.

Adelia, trainee pilot (far left in right picture, with colleagues)
“We enrich our vocabulary by learning military language, for example, through studying each part of the aircraft in English. I’ve also really improved my listening.”
