Statement of Purpose MSC Quantity Surveying

Since childhood, I am fascinated by the well-architecture buildings and structures. As I grew

up, I had developed an interest in not just buildings, but also in the process of the
constructions. My desire to learn about the architecture and constructions naturally became
more and more prominent as I attended to the adulthood and eventually, I have decided to
become a real-estate businessman. To fulfil my dream and get some theoretical knowledge
about the business world, I have successfully completed Bachelor of Business Administration
(BBA) from North South University, Bangladesh. Now I am actively involving in a property
development business currently as a Manager at Zayrah Real Estate. I have successfully
completed my under-graduation in Business that included 40 courses like Business Law,
Marketing, Managements, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Environmental science,
statistics, International Business etc. I believe that these wide range of courses and my work
experiences are compatible with the Quantity Surveying programme.

The reason behind choosing Quantity surveying course is its excellent course content and
practical knowledge that will enable me to learn about the possible challenges during
construction, sustainable construction, cost management and quantification. Moreover,
university arranged workshops will help me to build networking with the experts. The
additional advantage of this course is that, it is recognized by the Royal Institute of Chartered
Surveyors (RICS). The attraction and passion towards construction & building have lead me
to choose this subject (Quantity Surveying). This subject (Quantity surveying) consists of all
the courses which are closely related to my passionate and professional life. After completing
my under graduation programme, I started working in a contraction projects named Zayrah’s
Villa under Zayrah Real Estate. I worked intensively with the ground level of workers and
learned practical knowledge of construction of building. From soil testing, the process of
piling, Backfilling, base casting, beam and floor concrete casting, brick works, electrical
works, plumbing and sanitation works, tiles fittings, door and window works and so on. After
completing this vital project I started working in main branch of Zayrah Real Estate
(Property Development Business) as a full time employee, which allowed me to learn
practical knowledge along with creating a huge network in this field.
During my work, I had to learn thoroughly “The Building Construction Act, 1952 (E.B. Act II
of 1953), Bangladesh’ which covered the law of construction of this course. My finance
background and practical knowledge of project costing cover most of the part of cost
management and I eagerly want to learn in depth of this section, which is also part of this
course. I want acquire more knowledge about Sustainable construction, advanced
quantification and integrated project delivery method, which will help me to take decision on
the dot in my professional life.

I am very much prompt at my work. My educational background and work experience have
pushed me to become a better version of myself. Our company honoured me with ‘Just in
time’ award in 2019 for delivering the project before assigned time frame. The Skill of
costing, project valuation and forecasting in an effective way will help me to get in to this
Quantity Surveying programme. As a student of Business school I always had a thirst for the
best output at minimum cost which has driven me to come up with an idea to make a different
type of Unbaked Brick. This brick can be made using local soil, sand, certain percentage of
cement, limestone powder and plaster and most interestingly fire and heat resistant. After
successfully making this brick we have tested the strength of this and get the result of same as
the strength of normal brick. After seeing this innovation our company’s higher management
apprised me with a crest and some monetary benefits. Not only that they helped me to apply
my idea to build few number of houses for the people who live in the slum. Furthermore,
with the help of our company’s workforces we were able to teach the process of making this
brick to our nearest unprivileged people of the slum. Surprisingly, this brick is
environmentally friendly which require low cost of making and can be made by the
community themselves.

Internship is one of the major parts of our BBA programme. I completed my internship in a
Mutual Trust Bank Ltd. In that time my supervisor asked me to check data of few loan
proposal of well known companies. By analysing those proposal, I have learned how to
forecast viability of an endeavour, how to make a proposal for a loan to omit initial financial
crisis of a project and how to make a precise costing of different wings of a full project.
Furthermore, two years of working in construction sector helped me to build a convincing
connection with different sector of people in construction area. After completing an
assignment successfully of building six storied house, I joined as a Executive officer of a well
Reputed Real Estate company (Zayrah Real Estate). After working 4 (Four) years
successfully, the company has promoted me as a manager. This company obliges me to join
lots of seminar, meeting of expertise and pursue courses regarding law of construction, cost
management, project management and sustainable development.

In the pursuit of an appropriate university which would offer my selected programmes, I have
chosen the Birmingham City University after having gone through a lot of university
curriculums both at home and abroad. Unfortunately, universities in Bangladesh do not offer
any such courses yet, and that is why I have chosen to pursue my Master Degree in the UK.
Since I have already visited the campus of Birmingham City University during the period of
my visit in the UK and I am quite familiar with their local culture and humbleness of people.
Moreover, Birmingham is one of the most coveted cities with great living standards and one
of the safest cities in the world.

I have completed my BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) degree in medium of

English. In addition, I have scored overall 6 (Six) in IELTS exam which will help me to
pursue my higher education in medium of English. By enrolling in this course, would be an
excellent opportunity to assemble enough knowledge and skills to make my plan/wish into
the reality.
I have chosen this course to study in the UK because there is no institution in Bangladesh,
which provides this kind of course with exact curriculum, apart from this the educational
standard in the UK is extraordinary compared to any other countries in the world. In addition,
the Birmingham City University is renowned university in the heart of Birmingham and it has
incredible reputation in education. Most importantly I have visited Birmingham in 2012 and
also visit the campus which was very fascinating. All these reasons made me interested to
apply.

In short, my dream to venture in the sector of real-estate Business in Bangladesh and reside
with my beloved parents, family members and friends, as my family is here and I see myself
living a life with all of them nearby. This way, I too shall be able to take care of my loving
family, aligning with my professional milestones. Apart from professional life my hobbies are
reading, traveling, gardening and watching movies. I believe reading books and articles open
the door to all aspects of wisdom. I have to do a certain amount of reading as part of my job.
For relaxation I go through architectural magazines which cover interior and exterior of
building. I have visited seven countries so far (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Malaysia,
Singapore, Thailand and United Kingdom). Each country has different architectural
establishment. Travelling helped me a lot to understand the taste and the difference between
the modern and historical architectural structures. After seeing this establishment few
questions arise in my mind that how much cost involve to do this types of establishment, how
much time require to complete it and types of technologies involvement. Another hobby is
gardening. I reckon environmental friendly modern architecture is the epicentre of sustainable
constructions.
Watching movie is another source of gather knowledge of historical, contemporary and
futuristic establishment.

Lastly I would like to request to get admitted on Birmingham City University to do my MSC
in Quantity Surveying.
