PRIME & COMPOSITE NUMBERS

SUBJECT TEACHER GRADE DATE

MATH MS. FAITAU 4th Grade 10/02/2020

OBJECTIVE
- Students will be able to find factor pairs for the whole numbers and determine if
they’re prime or composite numbers.

CONCEPT
- STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO FIND THE PRIME FACTOR NUMBERS
- WRITE THE PRIME FACTORS OF A GIVEN NUMBER CORRECTLY
- PARTICIPATE IN THE ACTIVITIES

SKILL
- Finding the prime factors of a number

MATHMATICAL CONCEPT
- Prime numbers are WHOLE numbers GREATER than 1, that have only two factors. (1
and the number itself). Prime numbers are divisible only by the number 1 or itself.

GENERAL GOAL
- Active participation and being able to comprehend a little each day
- How well do they respond to the drill exercise?

REQUIRED MATERIALS
- Factor Tree for group work
- Computer/ipads to access worksheets
- Scratch paper if needed

KEY TERMS
- Prime
- Factors
- Composite

GENERAL VIEW
- Show the teaching component at the top of the Rainbow worksheet. Have the students
turn and talk to their groups on how to compete the rainbow worksheet.
- Choose a student to share their answers
- When defining factors; numbers that we can multiply together in order to ger another
number.
- Ask the students to shout out which numbers they think is whether prime or composite
REVIEW
- Ask students to consider some patterns they can think about when classifying factors
as composite or prime. For example, even numbers expect for the number 2 as well as
numbers that end in 5 will always be composite
- Break off into groups again and tell a partner your thoughts on noticing patterns when
it comes to finding the difference between prime and composite numbers

ACCOMADATIONS
- My student has ADHD and struggles extremely in math. I have decided to create
his/her own spreadsheet to work on that would look similar to the rest of the class so
they do not feel left out.
- I will allow for them to have extra time on assignments as well as test
- Provide frequent checkup to see how well they are doing
- Keep math samples of that lesson on the board at all times for them to look back on
as well as making sure they have it written down in notebooks.

WHITEBOARD ACTIVITY:

Objective: There is a list of numbers scattered out and in no particular order. Students

are to come up to the board in groups of four and determine the numbers that are prime

or composite. For Example, we know that 13 is a prime number so we will put the

number 13 into the “PRIME” circle. Each group will have 1 minuet to try and get the

most numbers in the correct spot. Whichever ever team wins will receive a “Homework

pass”.
