The Case:

A recent survey in a suburban community projects an influx of new

citizens into the area. Several computer industries will be

relocating to the area, and they are expected to employ 25,000

persons at all levels of the organizations. Also, one of these

computer companies will locate its corporate headquarters here,

with an additional 500 executives arriving soon.

The local hotel association has contacted Professor Catherine

Vicente of the HRI program at City College for assistance in

determining the impact these new residents will have on their

hotels with regard to occupancy and use of facilities.

If you were Professor Vicente, what action would you undertake?

Justify your responses with regard to hotel operations and

development. If you lived in these community, how would these

developments affect your career in the hotel industry?

CASE STUDY ANALYSIS:

If you were Professor Vicente, what action would you undertake?

The relocation of the computer industries and influx of new

citizens will create new challenges for the area and local

institutions. It will contribute to the area’s economic vitality.

On the other hand, influx of new citizens means increase in

population which can be the root of environmental pollution,

hunger, and habitat loss.

If I were Professor Vicente, I will analyze and study the long-

term impacts of the said relocation activity, both positive and

negative. I will call for a meeting with the hotel owners within

the area to discuss the effects and how to execute proper operation

despite of the possible high accommodation demand and to ensure

their quality service and maintenance of the facilities. Moreover,

I need to talk with the computer companies that will be relocating,

they must ensure also that they must take responsibility with the

impact that they will cause such as; population and pollution. The

said relocation will give more exposure to the hotels in the

suburban area and with this, an increase in revenue is expected.

In contrast, hotel owners, managers, and staffs must ensure that

they can maintain their facilities in the highest quality possible.

For the hotel owners, it is good news because these computer

industries can help them in technological advancement which can

make them into the curve. Personally, it is a great opportunity to

gain a profit from the several computer industries that are

relocating to the area.

If you lived in these community, how would these developments

affect your career in the hotel industry?

There is limited time to plan because the executives are arriving

soon, but all the staffs must be ready for high occupancy at the

hotel. The new clients need a place to stay, to hold business

meetings, and to have an advertising partner in the area. Jobs

might be opened to new employees expanding the hotel industry’s

career choices in the area. Placing all the new businessmen in the

clean and quality room at the hotel, not only shows the value of

the hotel, but also these men could possibly become repeat

customers. The hotel should have a welcoming feel, a home away

from home. The businessmen are away from their families and looking

for a place to stay temporarily until they find a house to call

their own. This expectation for high occupancy will drive me to

give more quality hospitality service as it challenges my skills

and capabilities is managing an operation, serving the guests, and

maintaining a clean facility.
