Finally at about 4 in the morning it all came together as it so often does for me. I have been working on this concept for some time. I came up with a formula too: Creativity + Cooperation + Collaboration + Intuition = Heart Directed Marketing. So let's start with the first C – Creativity. I have one of those wrist watch PDAs that allow me to keep information with me to read like while visiting the throne. One of my favorites is from the classic little book by Wallace Wattles entitled The Science of Getting Rich. In that book Wattles says: “...I must pass from the competitive to the creative mind; otherwise I can't be in harmony with the Formless Intelligence, which is ALWAYS (my emphasis) creative and NEVER (my emphasis) competitive in spirit.” We are taught from an early age that competitive spirit that says that we can only get ahead if we compete in the game. I was taught that very same philosophy and only recently after a great deal of reading and soul searching have I come to the conclusion that being CREATIVE is the key! Even our physicists have come to the conclusion that Creativity is the key to the Universe. As I study the Bible more I note that God taught about Creativity more than competitiveness. If it works for God and science then it has to work for me. Carefully look at what Wattles wrote: “...otherwise I can't be in HARMONY (my emphasis) with the Formless Intelligence” or God for me. Many of the writers including my friend Bob Proctor say that we must be vibrating on the same wave length to create abundance. When we work from Creativity instead of competitiveness we are on the same wave length with God, the Master Creator! When do I get my most creative ideas? During dreams when I'm not being influenced by the physical world! I will give you an example that came totally from a dream. It is called ShowTheWorldYourURL (http://www.showtheworldyoururl.com) where people are given the opportunity to submit to us a 90 second or less creative video that tells the world about their business or passion. We have created a directory where people can select for FREE one area to place their video. If they want one of the Top 5 slots then they agree to pay an annual fee. That all came from a dream including the url name! God was sending me a GIFT that during waking hours I might have missed! History validates this with a look at the number of discoveries and inventions that came during dreams. The second part of the Heart Directed Marketing is Cooperation. I must say I have a history of being a lone wolf entrepreneur. I will never forget an experience that I had during a training called Mastery in Manifesting taught by one of my favorite teachers Marshal Thurber, creator also of Money & You and the Berklin School of Entrepreneurship, where one of his star pupils went one to create the incredible company Celestial Seasonings. The experience is called The Blocks Game. You might have heard of it or even played it. There were a group of 5-7 at our table and we were given a bunch of wooden blocks and told to create something from them. I looked at the assortment of blocks and saw nothing that could
be created from this whatsoever which I immediately announced to the group. These were my “know-it-all” days! One of the rules was that whatever we created we had to all agree on it. So we began a LONG night of hackling, arguing and sending people into tears over these blocks! And I'm sure that you can figure out who was the bad guy in the group! As the night wore on other groups in the room were told they had solved the challenge and could go home. I'm sure that you can imagine what was going through my mind: “If these idiots in my group would let me run things we would be going home too!” I finally told my group that I had enough and wanted to go home. Remember we had to ALL agree to solve the problem. If I went home then our group had to disband. Of course, as you might have imagined we were also the LAST group in the room! As far as I was concerned we were NEVER going to solve the problem the way it was suppose to be solved. Yes, there was supposedly only one solution and we were constantly being told that we had not solved it! I had so disrupted the group that the monitor in the room went to get Marshal. He again explained to me in a very calm manner what were the rules we had agreed to in the beginning. Finally all my frustrations of being a loner came gushing out and tears rolled down my face. I apologized to my group and said that I was ready to COOPERATE. I guess you have figured out there was NEVER one solution to The Blocks Game. After working another 20 minutes or so we were told that we had solved it! We were elated, hugging each other and hi fiving! The REAL Blocks were not on the table but were OURSELVES not COOPERATING! I learned that if I had not been so damn antagonistic we would have been out of there hours ago. Might find this a great game to play with your business partners. The third C is Collaboration. I have studied and written extensively on this subject including the program I presented to The American Community Gardening Association. Every generation we create new “buzz” words. Previous ones that come to mind are “team building,” “communication,” and the big one - “coaching.” I like Collaboration. Of course, collaboration is not a new phenomena. In the past we have also associated collaboration with the arts and especially science. We only have to look at the Beatles with Lennon and McCartney in music; T.S. Elliot and Ezra Pound in literature and in science with Nobel Prize winners Watson and Crick. Also as we look to nature we see an excellent example of collaboration in our ecosystem. In order for our ecosystem to function at its highest and most complex level collaboration must take place. So what makes collaboration different from “team building”? According to the Wall Street Journal columnist and author, Michael Schrage “collaboration is a purposive relationship for solving a problem, or creating something or discovering something.” The goal of this conference on Community Gardening is to learn and share how gardening can play a role in developing relationships among individuals in the community. One of the first things we must do in collaboration is create “value” with others in the community. In order to find that “value” we should conduct what I call an “abilities and talents” audit of the
community. This audit takes into consideration the various abilities and talents that build synergy in a community. This audit can only be as successful as the TRUST level we build in collaboration. Success will not be built by gossiping, finger pointing and back stabbing. We must be willing to share our resources, ideas, and especially our contacts. Where do we find contacts? By developing a good network from ALL walks of life in order to become a good collaborator. We must then NUTURE our contacts through continual communication. Another important aspect of collaboration is SHARED goals and visions. The aforementioned artists, writers and scientists were always sharing their latest ideas and concepts on a CONTINUOUS basis. At their time they did not have the incredible world of communication we have today with email, video conferencing, cell phones, text messaging, etc. It's initially your vision but through collaboration it becomes OUR shared vision. We become co-creators of a LARGER purpose connected to each other. We then want to enroll more people in our vision but we must remember to do this through commitment and not compliance. Another important aspect of collaboration is SHARED SPACES. The room we are now sharing is a wonderful opportunity for collaboration. In this space we must have CONTINUOUS but not necessarily CONTINUAL communication. Also collaboration can be in both formal and informal environments. Your neighborhood discussions in your communities can take place on porches or more importantly while gardening. The creators we have used as examples knew the importance of DIALOGUE as opposed to DISCUSSION. With dialog we leave our egos at the door! We learn the art of listening with dialog. You must demonstrate RESPONSIBILITY but there is no need for restrictive boundaries. Decisions don't have to be by consensus. Finally with collaboration it must come to an end unlike relationships. Collaboration has TIME limits that can be created due to death like with John Lennon. Most of the time collaboration ends when the goals and objectives for the project have been completed like with Watson and Crick and their DNA work. So is collaboration good for other areas besides community gardening. You bet it is and here is a list that I would like to share with you: Brainstorming or as I like to say HeartFunFlowing New client meetings Project management meetings Interdepartmental product design efforts Marketing and advertising campaigns
Technical reviews Strategic planning sessions Sales presentations Contract negotiations Arbitration hearings Budget reviews Quality circle meetings Cross cultural discussions Documentation production sessions So hopefully you will be able to take away some ideas on collaboration from this above presentation. Finally we come to Intuition. There have been so much written on this subject that I certainly do not have to elaborate on it. I would only say that even Fortune 100 company CEOs like Ted Turner admit the importance of Intuition in their decision making. You might want to read best selling author Laura Day's Practical Intuition for Success which is based on her workshops with business executives, scientists, celebrities, etc. Now that we have our formula you might want to know what I consider Heart Directed Marketing. This form of marketing is based on my research into HeartMath as taught by Doc Childre and Howard Martin of Institute of HeartMath. A great book for learning more would be their The HeartMath Solution which deals with their years of research in this fascinating field. Here is what bestselling author of The Seat of the Soul, Gary Zukav, said: “A celebration of the intelligence of the heart and a practical guide to living it.” Let me share with you some research from Doc Childre and his team about the heart. First, are you aware that the heart has its own brain? Yes, there is an independent nervous system where there are at least 40,000 neurons in the heart. This “heart” brain has the ability to reduce activity of the sympathetic nervous system that speeds up the heart rate. What are we looking for when we meditate or center ourself? A slow downed heart rate. Then this “heart” brain increases the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system relaxing the body's inner systems increasing its effectiveness. Conclusions of extensive research at the Institute have further demonstrated that both intelligence and INTUITION are heightened when we listen to our heart! Are we not using both intelligence and intuition when we are “brainstorming” which I now call HeartFunFlowing? Doc Childre likes to call the COLLABORATION between the heart and the brain the Ultimate Partnership. Research from the Institute and other centers of brain/heart research have been presented in
prestigious professional journals like the International Journal of Psychophysiology, Scientific American, Biological Psychology, Clinical Investigator, Life Sciences, Journal of American College of Cardiology, etc. Here are some of the fascinating findings: *Information coming from the heart to the brain can have profound effects on the higher brain centers. *Our emotional states are reflected in our heart rhythms, which effect our brain's ability to process information, make decisions, solve problems, and experience and express CREATIVITY! Does that not sound like the “heart” has way more to do with “brainstorming” than we previously thought? Are we not wanting to solve problems through creativity when we use HeartFunFlowing? Could we not develop better marketing campaigns through Heart Directed Marketing? *Due to the heart being the strongest biological oscillator in our body this causes all of our other body systems to be pulled into entrainment with the heart's rhythms. Now what does that mean in layman's terms? First we need to see the definition of “oscillator” in the Merriam Webster Dictionary: “a device that causes something to fluctuate or swing backward and forward like a pendulum”. So we see that the heart is acting as a pendulum. You have probably seen a pendulum in an old fashion windup grandfather clock. Now what do we mean by entrainment? Well this goes back to the inventor of the pendulum clock, Christian Huygens, who one day noted that all the pendulums of his clocks were swinging in unison even though he knew that they had not been started at the same time. He immediately decided to stop the pendulums and then start them swinging in different directions at different times. To his amazement within a short period of time all the pendulums were swinging in unison again. Every time he tried this experiment the clocks would eventually begin to swing in unison. Christian never did discover the mystery of what would be called “entrainment” but later scientific research found the answer: it seems that the largest pendulum will eventually pull the surrounding pendulums into unison because it has the strongest rhythm. So what body part has the strongest rhythm? The heart. Therefore it is able to cause the brain to entrain with it which at its optimum level occurs as the heart rhythms complete one cycle every 10 seconds – the heart/brain connection that can lead to deep love or appreciation. *Doc Childre and his researchers have developed an incredible exercise that takes only a few minutes called Freeze Framing. Well using human research subjects it was found that when subject's heart and brain waves entrain at 0.1Hz through Freeze Framing and other HeartMath techniques like Cut-Thru and Heart Lock-In, there is reported a heightened state of well being and INTUITIVE clarity. *Positive feelings like appreciation, love, joy, etc. also were found to increase order and balance in the autonomic nervous system which led to enhanced immunity, improved hormonal balance and more efficient brain function. Are we not looking for more efficient brain function with HeartFunFlowing?
*Freeze Framing also has been found to facilitate higher brain function because this process changes the information flow from the heart to the brain. As promised here is information about Freeze Framing and how to do it. However I think that you should know what Freeze Framing refers to. Let's use an analogy that you should be able to identify with if you are 50 years or older. If you are younger ask your Mom or Dad or even grand parents. Remember when you were at the old movie theater and you would be watching the film and it would all of sudden “freeze” on the screen? There would be no further movement on the screen. That last scene of the movie would be imprinted in your mind until the projectionist got the film fixed and the movie scenes moved on. That last image would be what is called a Freeze Frame. Now when you perform Freeze Framing I want you to remember one incident when you were frustrated, angry, stressed out, any negative emotional scene. Please stop the movie running in your mind right now and Freeze Frame it. What do you see? Hold that scene in your mind. Now I want you to concentrate on your heart area. It might even help if you place your hand over your heart area so that you can feel the heart beating. What might amaze you is that your heart beat speeds up above its normal rate. Why? Because even if you were calm and peaceful before I asked you to remember the incident above, your brain and heart and all the rest of your body organs are being effected by the scene you are reliving negatively! A Harvard Medical School study showed that when a group of 1,623 heart attack survivors dealt with an episode of anger conflict negatively, their risk for a subsequent heart attack was more than double those who remained calm. A Duke University study in 1997 showed that common every day occurrences of tension, frustration and sadness caused a more than double chance of myocardial ischemia, which can be a precursor to a heart attack. Now as you look at these scientific research findings do you begin to see why you should begin to eliminate as much negative emotional patterns from your life? More importantly why you should STOP reliving those scenes from your life that are full of hurt, anger and rage. Your heart does NOT know the difference between a past event and a current one just like you have been told over and over by every self help guru about your subconscious. How many say the same as related to your heart brain/consciousness? I have not read any thing about this area of research until I became a student of the Institute of HeartMath. I want you to focus on the heart for at least 10 seconds. Let's return to Freeze Framing. You have begun to concentrate on your heart area and even placed your hand over your heart. Now I want you to do what for me was one of the most difficult steps of Freeze Framing.
Begin to visualize but most importantly FEEL one of the most joyful, happiest events of your life. Pick one right now. Visualize it. And most importantly feel it! This might be difficult for you like it was for me. Why? Because we have spent most of our lives 24/7/365 remembering NEGATIVE events in our past life! I can't remember the exact amount of times but it is astronomical where a child hears the word NO before he is five years old. I think it was like 4 to 1 – 4 Nos to 1 Yes. Today with more child abuse, exposure to drugs, latch key kids, angry dangerous parents, etc. is it any wonder a child has a difficult time recalling a joyous happy occasion? However I experienced none of the above in my childhood. Still it took me quite a few times to finally find a scene that filled me with joy and happiness that I could use for this process. It occurred one wonderful Christmas morning when my neighbors Sally and Bob Taux brought over their gift for me. As I unwrapped the fairly large box (remember when you were a kid you thought that the bigger the box the better the gift) I noted that it was a cool car and that it was from West Germany and even had German words on it. As I carefully opened the colorful box and pulled out the car I could hardly believe my eyes. It was an exact replica of a very popular German convertible in the 1950s. I think it was a Mercedes now that I am visualizing it. I was told by her husband, Bob, that it used batteries which they had already placed in the compartment. Bob showed me how to start the car and more importantly how to drive it! I remember you took the long steel cord that had a suction cup on one end that fitted over the steering wheel of the car. The Germans were even demonstrating their ingenuity back then with toys! At the other end of the cord were controls that allowed you to control the steering wheel. Furthermore I just remembered that the cord at the end with the suction cup branched off to enable the stick shift to be controlled for making the car go forward or backwards. Also it had headlights and even rear lights that worked. I was in seventh heaven and as I think about it would love to have that little car right now! Of all the toys and gifts I got from my parents and friends that little German car stands out and has become my Freeze Framing scene! So have you found your scene yet? Don't worry. It might take you a while like it did me to find the one you want to use. So as you visualize and more importantly feel this scene and focus on your heart, ask yourself this question: “What would be a more efficient response to the situation (the negative one you Freeze Framed), one that would minimize future stress?” Amazing research subjects and thousands of people from all walks of life have reported that as they practiced Freeze Framing more often they began to have their INTUITION and common sense kick in quicker than ever before. Solutions will come quicker with little or no stress involved as you practice this technique. Finally, and this is one of the most important steps of Freeze Framing: listen to what answer
your heart is sharing with you! Please, don't think this is some New Age touchie-feelie process. This is a scientifically researched process that works only when you begin to listen to your heart as opposed to your head! That's it! And I promise you that the more you practice Freeze Framing the quicker will come solutions to your problems. So will my HeartFunFlowing increase with Freeze Framing? You bet it will! Instead of Freeze Framing a negative event just Freeze Frame one of the problems that you need to solve. Then concentrate and focus on your heart area. Remember in the past when you solved a problem you thought was impossible. Visualize that event and feel how you felt. When the light bulb went off and you had the “Eureka” moment how did you feel? Did you feel lighter? More joyous? More relieved and less stressed? Higher self esteem? More powerful and self confident? Again ask the question this time saying: “What are some of the most creative, fun filled flowing ways I could solve this problem/situation that is win/win for all involved?” Then most importantly LISTEN to your HEART! I think that you can see how using Freeze Framing and HeartFunFlowing could lead to Heart Directed Marketing based on Creativity, Cooperation, Collaboration and Intuition!
