How to Write Notes that Boost Memory Retention
My apologies for the absence in my usual weekly emails. Things have been to say the least very crazy at my end. Between juggling my last semester at university, exams, preparing students for the HSC, and preparation for an overseas holiday for the end of the year, time has been very short. So, while I procrastinate for my last ever university exam I thought I would deal with a topic that has been relevant both to myself and high school students over the last couple of weeks. Recently, I have been madly constructing notes for my final exams. This process has made me think more closely about the structure of notes, and this recently also resonated in a number of student s questions in classes. How should you make notes? As the Year 12 semester is underway and assessments on the horizon, it is absolutely necessary to begin constructing notes for subjects. Notes, as I have written in previous articles are the foundation of your knowledge. Their purpose is to improve memory retention via repetition in the creation process, and to serve as a resource, which, through their design, and succinct format, aid in memory retention and recollection. To cut straight to the point, they are a vital part in helping you understand more, learn more, and importantly remember more come assessment time. So, with this in mind, how should you be constructing notes? Notes need to fulfil the following two objectives: 1. Provide clear, succinct information that relates to syllabus 2. Structure in a format which aid memory retention and recollection

With the QEC method. cut your notes down to the vital information + also get valuable practice/exposure to past exam questions.Normally would be inclined to write every single thing down that the teacher says/copy it from the notes/textbook you read. Often I have found that the key issue with students who have made notes is that while they know the material in the notes very well. but also a symbol of Peter s own isolation in the presence.
