STUDY COURSES - HOW DO THEY WORK?
PGL Study Courses give you and your group a stimulating combination of adventurous activities and hands-on study in Maths, Science or ICT. Each day is divided into four sessions and you choose how much study and how much activity you do. These courses help you to fulfil academic needs which don’t always fit easily into the classroom environment and offer pupils a programme of study they will enjoy so much they won’t even realise it’s work! Courses take place at PGL centres which are ideally equipped with study facilities and ICT suites. Please refer to pages 12 and 13 for full details of accommodation at our centres.

ADVENTURE
Appropriate outdoor activity sessions fit around and feed into your study sessions. These include team and individual challenges, led by trained staff to help your pupils develop personally and socially, as well as developing skills and knowledge in the chosen subject area.

ENTERTAINMENT
You will be glad you chose PGL when evening comes! Our friendly staff offer your group a full entertainment programme, tailored to suit their needs – join in or take the chance to watch and relax!

STUDY
Choose the study units within the subject you want to cover (Maths, Science or ICT), which reflect the curriculum areas that meet your needs. The courses are integrated with the activity sessions – pupils are surrounded by outdoor activities where there is a wealth of scientific, mathematical and ICT information just waiting to be explored!

Following inspection by the Adventure Activities Industry Advisory Committee (AAIAC) all PGL centres have been approved and awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge. The award was designed to establish a benchmark of quality in the industry and is awarded to providers who not only pledge to engage in high quality learning outside the classroom, but who can demonstrate its fulfillment in practice. ICT KEY STAGE 3 / S1 - S3
WHAT’S DIFFERENT WITH PGL?
PGL ICT courses incorporate practical activities which are linked directly to the ICT work you do back in the classroom. Whether pupils are creatively interpreting their stay at PGL or analysing data collected from on-site weather stations, all our ICT modules are fully integrated into the whole PGL experience.

KEY THEMES
● National Curriculum (England): Finding Information, Developing Ideas, Communicating Ideas, Evaluating Information ● National Curriculum for Wales: Finding and Analysing Information, Using ICT to Analyse and Interpret Data, Using a Range of ICT Resources and Equipment Independently and Collaboratively ● Curriculum for Excellence (Scotland): Problem Solving in Design, Energy Transfer, Control Technology, Communicating Ideas and Information

UNITS OF STUDY
Animation
Pupils explore a variety of animation techniques before using stop-frame and digital animation to create a short film clip featuring an imaginary character. They plan, design and create all aspects of their character’s movement and make it run, jump or even fly across a digital landscape.

Design
Using their experiences of PGL adventure activities, pupils conceive and design a new activity base. They produce a questionnaire for staff and pupils in order to ascertain current favourites and benefits to inform their ideas. They consider possible locations, explore building costs, time factors and how many people could use the new base. All information is entered onto a database and each group produces a report to include plans, photos and recommendations

Control
Through a range of challenges, pupils develop their computer control skills using a variety of software packages and programmable robots. They consider the key principles of computer control and how they affect each challenge. Each challenge is designed to demonstrate these concepts in a slightly different format, allowing pupils to develop a broad understanding.

Digital Effects
Pupils are given the opportunity to create either a news and weather report, or a superhero-themed movie with digital instructors, using ‘green screen’ filming techniques or professional animation software, as appropriate. They add sound tracks and special effects to their finished product, taking a short movie back to school which is ‘ready to view’.

Data Logging and Handling
Pupils use a range of mobile equipment to measure parameters such as heart rate, acceleration and body temperature whilst participating in a wide range of adventure activities. Real and understandable data make the work relevant and important to your group. They can also use the internet to access data from other experiences and to compare their results with professional recommendations or suggested targets.

Forecasting
Pupils record weather forecasts for each day they are on centre, using a variety of sources such as physical measurements, TV, the internet and coastguard reports. They evaluate the various presentation methods used and then present the daily forecast to other guests and staff on-site, considering the needs of different audiences. They use poster displays, PowerPoint presentations or even PGL’s own website and then evaluate the

level of their own accuracy and consider reasons for any discrepancies. This unit can be one or two sessions long as preferred.

Pupils use their PGL residential experience to create a brochure about the centre aimed at pupils back at school who may be thinking about visiting PGL next year. The brochure will contain news, advice, information and interesting facts. Pupils consider the information they will require then source and select appropriate resources and develop a document to suit their target audience.

A chance for their ‘fifteen minutes of fame’. In this unit pupils create a music video with sound and special effects, working in small teams. They then work as a group to link all the separate music videos into a music orientated TV show, which is filmed, edited and ‘ready to view’. Participants have the opportunity to take a range of roles within the filming and production process.
