STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
CONDUCTING A FUNCTIONAL TEST and
WEIGHT VERIFICATION OF BALANCES UP TO 150KG

1. PURPOSE.

To ensure that the equipment used to measure parameters of product identified in the
inspection and process procedures is accurate to the required level of uncertainty.

2. SCOPE

This procedure applies to routine functional check or weight verification of all balances as per
the attached Calibration Plan.

3. REFERENCES

devices.

4. RESPONSIBILITIES.

- It is the responsibility of the departmental head to ensure that the following procedures are
adhered to and understood by all relevant personnel.
- The departmental head has to check the daily balance functional and verification report.
- Deviations reported on the daily functional and verification report must be addressed
immediately.

5. DOCUMENTS & RECORDS

Calibration Plan and Individual balance functional and verification records.

6. SAFETY AND HEALTH - none

7. WORK INSTRUCTIONS

7.1 Calibration Procedures

External sub-contractors must comply with the following requirements in order to calibrate all
balances and weights as per the Calibration Plan:

1. External contractor must be certified and SANAS accredited.
2. All equipment is calibrated according to documented procedures.
3. All personnel are trained.
4. All equipment used is traceable to a national standard.
5. The equipment is calibrated over its operation range.
6. The equipment is calibrated to the required accuracy.
7. A calibration or verification certificate must be supplied with each calibration.

Check the overall cleanliness of the work area. 6. Check the level of the balance with the help of the spirit level. Calibration and validation certificates must display the testing laboratory’s SANAS accreditation. 7. Check that the visual display is working and readable. 2. Complete the applicable record for the identified balance.3 Weight Verification Accuracy Test 1. serial number and company asset number is still clear on the specific balance. Important: If a balance has not been calibrated within the prescribed period. Check the accuracy of the balance by using 3 standard certified weights. Place the standard certified weights one by one in ascending order (smallest to largest) in the centre of the weighing platform. NUTRI FEEDS-LAB-SOP-16 . Ensure that balance is clean and levelled prior to weight verification. Acceptance Criteria: Standard weight ± 4% Prepared by: Authorized by: Signature / Date: Senior Technical Officer Quality Manager Revision 01 DOC. 3. Remove the platform and ensure that there are not obstructions in or around the load cell area.NO. Check that the platform and exposed parts of the balance are clean and dry. 7. Accuracy test should be performed on all listed balances daily. An accredited external contractor must calibrate the equipment listed on the Calibration Plan at least once each year. Record the weight observations in the balance functional and verification record.

precision and corner test results to the QC Manager and Senior Technical Officer immediately.5 kg 7. Send a copy of the accuracy. Precision Test 1. place a red tag on the balance signifying “Not Fit For Use” 9. NUTRI FEEDS-LAB-SOP-16 . Acceptance Criteria: Average of 5 measurements for both a) and b) should not deviate from certified standard weigh by more than: 100g ± 5g 500g ± 25g 1 kg ± 50g 5 kg ± 250g 20 g ± 500g 20 kg ± 1 kg 30 kg ± 1. If the precision test and corner test fails then the balance must be removed from operations. Using the above weights for a) and b) of specific balance’s capacity. 10. NUTRI FEEDS STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE CONDUCTING A FUNCTIONAL TEST and WEIGHT VERIFICATION OF BALANCES UP TO 150KG 7. Check that the balance is levelled and clean. 3. Precision test should be performed on all listed balances monthly. If the precision test fails then a corner test must be performed. 6. precision and corner test results to the QC Manager and Senior Technical Officer immediately. place a red tag on the balance signifying “Not Fit For Use” 8. if any of the three tests does not pass the balance must be sent to an accredited body for re-calibration and certification. if any of the three tests does not pass the balance must be sent to an accredited body for re-calibration and certification. Check the precision of the balance by using a standard certified weight equivalent to the following table  3 kg capacity a = 100g b = 1 kg  6 kg capacity a = 500g b = 5 kg  30 kg capacity a = 1 kg b = 10 kg  150 kg capacity a = 5 kg b = 10 kg + 20 kg 4. 2. An internal calibration wil be performed by either of them after which all three tests must pass. If the accuracy test fails on more than 2 of the weights then a precision and corner test must be performed immediately. or when the accuracy test failed on two of the check weights. Calculate the average of the 5 readings per weight. 5. if the corner test fails as well then the balance must be removed from operations. 8. repeat the weighing 5 times for each a) and then b) and record the readings. Send a copy of the accuracy.NO. An internal calibration wil be performed by either of them after which all three tests must pass.
