Unjustified Texts - Perspectives On Typography

Editions B42 2020 ISBN 9782490077182 Acqn 29990
Pb 13x21cm 392pp col ills £33

Somewhere in the borderlands between academia and journalism, Robin Kinross has made a
case for typography as a matter of fine detail and subtle judgement, whose products concern all
of us, every day. This selection of his shorter writings from the past 25 years, including a number
of previously unpublished essays, brings his major themes into focus: the unsung virtues of
editorial and information design, the fate of modernism in the 20th century, the work of dissident
and critical modernist designers, the contributions of emigre designers from Europe, and the
virtues of a socially oriented design approach. The selection forms an unusual and powerful
contribution to typography.

Marti Guixe - Transition Menu

Corraini Editore 2020 ISBN 9788875703929 Acqn 30893
Pb 21x27cm 80pp col ills £30

In Transition Menu, Marti Guixe shows us the transition from the art of cooking to Food Design. It
expands Guixe's research on food design, the project is based on some of Marti's personal
theories, thoughts and notes. These take shape in an essay and a layout of models that
represent an unbalanced transition menu, where old and modern both appear. Added to
traditional examples is a pinch of what is to come after haute cuisine, and a touch of Food
Design.

Alexandra Hopf - Becoming Siren (September 1940 - May 1941)

Vexer Verlag 2020 ISBN 9783907112342 Acqn 30979
Pb 21x27cm 104pp col ills £45

With 'Becoming Siren', Alexandra Hopf links the cultural history of the mythological Sirens with
the story of the siren suit, a one-piece garment for the whole body which can easily be put on or
taken off. Worn by women in England for comfort and modesty, but also popular among men and
children, the suit was designed for use during air raids in World War II. Wearing these overalls,
the dancers of the performance group The Sirens would entertain inside bunkers and London
Underground shelters. The historical source material and reconstructed dance scenes reveal the
diversity of the siren, in turn opening up space to dissolve gender polarities and class differences.

Swords Of Japan
Tokyo Bijutsu 2020 ISBN 9784808710712 Acqn 30922
Pb 13x18cm 132pp col ills £30

The sword is a widely recognised cultural symbol of Japan. Japanese swords are fundamentally
weapons, and yet the high level of skill involved in the production of a beautiful and effective
sword greatly increases its value, making them both sacred objects and symbols of authority. The
way in which a particular sword is manufactured reflects the period in which it was made. By
examining the finely polished surface steel and various patterns of the hardened edge, one can
determine the province, school, and even maker. This illustrated handbook offers an educative
look at the history, evolution, production, fittings and mountings, and appraisal of these elegant
blades.

Yuusoku - The Patterns Of Imperial Design

Mitsumura Suiko Shoin 2016 ISBN 9784838105359 Acqn 30953
Pb 13x16cm 318pp col ills £29.95
Text in Japanese

'Yuusoku' are traditional Japanese motifs based on designs from Heian courtly decoration, a
repertoire which originated from Tang Chinese influence in the 8th and 9th centuries. Gradually
these motifs came to be transformed into designs for decorating imperial or state clothing and
objects according to family status or court rank. Today 'yuusoku' is used to distinguish all of the
motifs and patterns traditionally used by the imperial family on objects of both public and private
function and in a variety materials. This volume shows myriad examples of such motifs,
specifically as they appear on textiles and ceramics. These include abstract, often geometrised
images from nature.
