Rabbi Louis and Saretta Lazovsky were born
and raised in Chicago. They have been
associated with B.H.H. Kesser Maariv A.L. since
1984, when Rabbi Lazovsky was appointed to
succeed Rabbi Zev Wein as spiritual leader of
Kesser Maariv.

Rabbi Lazovsky attended Akiba Jewish Day

School, Ida Crown, Roosevelt University and
The Harris School of Public Policy Studies of
The University of Chicago. He attended Brisk
Rabbinical College, receiving Semicha from
Harav Hagaon Ahron Soloveichik zt”l in 1977.
For over four decades, Rabbi Lazovsky has
involved himself in helping those in need –
including immigrants, the indigent and the
Jewish Day Schools in Chicago. He has held
numerous positions in education as a high
school teacher, Mashgiach in Yeshivah and
college administrator. Since 1987 he has held
positions of increasing responsibility at the
Jewish United Fund in the campaign
department, as Assistant Director - Budget &
Planning, and currently serves as a Vice
President - HR, Rabbi Lazovsky is a past
Chairman of the Board of the Midwest Business
Group on health.

He has been an officer of both the Merkaz

Harabbonim of Chicago and the Chicago
Rabbinical Council, and has chaired
committees and led projects and activities on
behalf of the Chicago Jewish community.

Rebbetzin Saretta attended Hillel Torah North

Suburban Day School, Ida Crown, the
University of Illinois at Chicago, and National-
Louis University. She has served as a Special
Education teacher at area Day Schools, and also
worked with young adults with special needs at
Keshet and the PACE Program of N.L.U. Saretta
also spent almost a decade as a Hebrew School
Teacher at the Consolidated Hebrew School in
Lincolnwood. A co-president of the Adele
Goldblum Women’s Council of Kesser Maariv,
the Rebbetzin has been involved in many
community activities and has received
numerous awards.
The Lazovskys built our community from
scratch. In 1993, with a handful of neighbors,
they started minyanim and programs, and
built the Shul building we have today. Their
house, and our Shul, is truly open to everyone
and everyone feels like they belong. They have
helped countless of our fellow Jewish friends
not only to survive, but also to thrive.
Literally, people who have no one and no
resources are cared for by the Lazovsky family.

While some may think that this is the “job” of

a Rabbi and Rebbetzin, the Lazovskys have
always gone above and beyond and, perhaps
most importantly, include their special,
personal touch and friendship.

The Rabbi and Rebbetzin take much pride in

their children (who grew up involved in Shul
events) and their grandchilren.

Message From the Rabbi

Shabbat, July 14, 1984, 14 Tammuz 5744, Parshat

Pinchas, was the first time that I was to make the 45
minute walk to Kesser Maariv at 6418 N. Greenview in
Chicago’s East Rogers Park neighborhood. It was a hot
and sunny summer day. Rabbi Zev Wein, o.b.m., had
just retired. As I walked into the sanctuary with over
250 seats, there were fewer than ten people there. I
walked up to the bimah and introduced myself to the
only man sitting there, Bernie Robbins, o.b.m., the
President, and took a seat near the back. I noticed not
only how few people were in shul but that for the most
part, they were all retired. About twenty minutes
later someone arrived in shul, approached me and told
me that I was sitting in his seat. I quickly excused
myself and moved. When the time for kriyat HaTorah
came there was no one there yet to read the Torah.
Mr. Robbins asked me if I would read the Torah and
even though I was not prepared, I agreed. After my
speech, Musaf and Kiddush I thanked everyone and
walked home. That evening I received a call to come
back to the shul the next morning to meet with the
Board. I was told that I was “their kind of man” in
that I could read the Torah and doven, and would I
consent to become the last Rabbi of Kesser Maariv
before the shul was to be closed. Tillie Newman,
o.b.m., the wife of Sam Newman, o.b.m., a past
President and current Treasurer had passed away and
Sam had six weeks left of Kaddish. As I recall, I was to
receive thirty-five dollars if I came to shul and
forty-five or fifty dollars if I also had to read the
Torah. Six weeks quickly past. Bernie and Allan
Goodkind, o.b.m. (Chairman of the Board), asked if I
would like to stay on through the high holidays that
was only a few weeks away. They were very clear that
I would serve only until then, no longer.

This past May, our family was to have been honored

for thirty-six years of service to the Congregation.
The event was to have been held in our beautiful one
acre campus, that was built thanks to the tireless
efforts of our past President Rick Katz, located at 4341
West Gold Road in Skokie, but Hashem had other
plans. COVID-19 struck in March and turned the
world we once knew upside down. While the event
was cancelled, the Congregation decided to
commemorate the anniversary with the publication of
an ad journal.

There are so many recollections, thoughts, feelings

and emotions that make up thirty-six years of
affiliation with an institution. Our personal outlook
and perspectives have certainly changed as we
physically moved from the days of our youth to our
golden years. There are feelings of joy, of weddings,
births, Brit Millahs, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs as well as
deep feelings of sorrow and loss of family members,
too many congregants and other loved ones who are
no longer with us, many taken before their time. We
hope that my father-in-law, Helman Allswang o.b.m.,
my parents, Sam and Florence Lazovsky o.b.m. and
many other loved ones from our families are all
looking down on us with pride and joy for what we
have attempted to achieve.

Today we recognize our dear Rebbetzin Saretta, who

is the true heart and soul of Kesser Maariv.
Synagogues, as people and as institutions, have a
unique character that are reflections of their
leadership. Some are made up of many distinct
families who often drift apart. Boruch Hashem, Kesser
Maariv is blessed to be one large family, a direct result
of the Aishes Chayil we have to teach us the true
meaning of Torat Eemecha – the Torah of our
mothers, the Torah of loving kindness. Only a
remarkable young woman would give up her home for
years and allow it to serve as a synagogue, give up
family time and vacations, be willing to be on call day
and night, be willing to host people who she doesn’t
know from around the world, to run to hospitals and
nursing homes, to counsel and teach, to make
kiddushes, cater simchas, and until COVID-19 struck,
to get up and make the shul’s cholent at 4:30 early
Friday morning. We could say dayenu after any one of
these but we must add being a devoted, loving
wonderful wife who has always advised me to go in a
proper path, a loving mother who raised beautiful
children that are devoted to Torah, Avodah and
Gemilut Chasadim. These would be significant
accomplishments for anyone, but Saretta has achieved
all this while earning a graduate degree in special
education and serving as an accomplished teacher of
children from the former Soviet Union, afternoon
school teacher in synagogues, job coach, teacher of
vulnerable, at-risk children at a therapeutic day
school, as a special education teacher at Keshet and
now at Hillel Torah. Kesser Maariv is a true reflection
of your neshama. May the Shechina repay you for all
your efforts ahd bias goel tzedek.

Our children have also been indispensable to the life

of the shul and are deserving honorees. Even as
infants, their very being infused light to those in the
twilight of their lives. When Tehilla was born, how
much pride the congregants took in “their” baby. I
remember so vividly the last Simchat Torah in East
Rogers Park and how difficult it was to get a minyan
and soon thereafter, having the boys walk with me
through every room in the shul to look for mezuzahs
and books that may have been left as they helped close
the shul in East Rogers Park looking forward to a
future that was yet unknown. In my mind’s eye I also
remember them with Grandpa Allswang o.b.m., as he
helped affix the mezuzah when we moved to the farm
house in Skokie. The little boys have grown up and
have received smicha from a gadol. They are scholars,
true Rabanim, talmidei chachamim and baalei chesed
on their way, with Hashem's help, to becoming
gedolim in Israel. They are well versed in the many
aspects of Torah, in teaching, in performing acts of
chesed and in all aspects of shul life such as reading
Torah and davening but more importantly they strive
to understand and share the essence of Torah.

Rabbi Ben Zion has been the shul’s Associate Rabbi and
administrator. He is responsible for serving as
publisher of the Kesser Maariv Press and the two
books we published, as chief librarian, responsible for
the acquisition of the shul's collection of sefarim,
writing the bulletins, paying the bills, issuing receipts,
running Zoom meetings, recording the shiuriim of
Harav Hagaon Moshe Soloveichik, even turning on the
bulbs in the Yahrzheit plaques. He taught weekly
Mishnah classes to the young boys of Kesser Maariv,
who have since grown up, Talmud classes, annual
Selichot drashas and has delivered lectures of great
depth and sweep. He married our beloved Channah,
who along with Chemda Bracha brings light and joy to
the shul.

Rabbi Eliyahu Dov, our Chief Chesed Officer, is very

involved with interactions with our congregants and
the minyonaires, and recently he used his graduate
degree in public health to safely set up the synagogue
for week day and high holiday services. He is
responsible for distribution of funds and providing
assistance to the needy, for giving shiurim and is also
involved in the Kesser Maariv Press. He achieves so
much for so many while still focusing on his
responsibilities as a single parent of two children.
Along with his brother, he has prepared many
children for Bar Mitzvah and helped parents with
speeches for simchas.

Tehilla married our beloved Rabbi Noam Ben-Ari and

moved to New York, but not before she left her mark
- running Shabbat programs for the shul’s children for
many years and as a teacher of her women-only class
on prayer, “Tefilla with Tehilla.” They, along with
their four children, have returned for the holidays to
help add ruach to our services. Tehilla is an
accomplished master teacher and Noam uses his
graduate degree in speech to help children learn how
to doven. Tehilla and Rabbi Noam moved to West
Hempstead a number of years ago, to help start a shul
in the community where he serves as Gabay. It is a
shul that started in a basement, moved to a small
facility and will soon be moving to a large spacious
location as their shul continues to grow. May our
children continue to merit spreading the light of G-d's
Holy Torah to all of Klal Yisroel. We pray that Hashem
blesses them and their families for all of their
activities on behalf of the shul and Klal Yisroel until
the coming of Moshiach.

We wish to express our deep gratitude to the many

people that have enabled us to reach this day and for
their many efforts on behalf of the shul over the years
starting with HaRav HaGaon HaRav Aharon and
Rebbetzin Ella Soloveichik z”tl and yibadail l’chaim
HaRav HaGaon Rav Moshe Soloveichik S”hlita. We
pray that the Ribono Shel Olam blesses him, his wife
Deborah, his family and students with His every
blessing. We express our appreciation to our dear
mother, Gilda Allswang and thank her for her ongoing
help, guidance, constant support and blessing. We
thank the past Board Chairman, all of the past
Presidents, board members and congregants that we
have been privileged to work with over the years and
our current hard working President, Steve Goldrich,
Board of Directors and Adele Goldblum Women's
Council. Our appreciation must also go to the Jewish
Federation and Jewish United Fund of Chicago whom
I have also served with dedication since December 7,
1987. We thank the many honorees, donors and
members who have sustained Kesser Maariv over the
years enabling us to become the oldest Orthodox
Congregation in the Midwest and to those who will do
the same in the future. Acharon acharon chaviv,
thanks to each and every one of you, members of our
extended family, for the honor you have bestowed
upon us and for the many prayers, contributions and
acts of chesed on behalf of our family these past
thirty-six years. We pray that this pandemic will soon
end and that all who need a refuah shelaimah will
receive one immediately as a result of your efforts.

We thank G d for our shul's continued growth and for

the good name that we enjoy in the community. We
pray that our shul will continue to constantly inspire
us and ennoble our lives. We pray that it continues to
be a bastion of Torah, gemilut chesed and tefillah for
our Kehilla and the entire Jewish community as well as
a fitting home for the Shechina until the time of the
ultimate geulah, may it come speedily in our days.

Jews count. We count in order to master time. We

count to commemorate our heroic past and in
anticipation of an even more glorious future in Eretz
Yisrael. This past May we celebrated the
seventy-second anniversary of the founding of Israel,
the first fruit of the promised redemption. We can
only stand in wonder of Hashem's kindness starting
with the relocation of the Embassy of the United
States of America to Jerusalem and for the many peace
treaties and miracles that have taken place this past
year. We look forward to even greater miracles in the
near future. Our family has learned to adapt to ever
changing circumstances and hope that our family’s
works have counted for you and your families these
past thirty-six years and have made this world a better
place. With G-d's help and your support, we look
forward to even greater achievements in the coming
years. As for me, I am thankful to have been able to
serve as a keeper of G-d’s house and mentor to His
people. We longingly await the day when in the not so
distant future, the Bait Hamikdash will be rebuilt and
the glory of G-d will rest upon us and all mankind.

Finally, I once again confer my personal blessing upon

our Mikdash mi'aat, the same one bestowed upon the
Mishkan and the Jewish people by Moshe Rabeinu:

"May it be your will that Your Divine presence rests

upon the work of our hands. May the pleasantness of
My Lord, our G d, be upon us. Our handiwork, may
He establish for us; our handiwork may He establish.

In Memory of

Michael BenEzra
Dearest Parents,
May G-d grant upon you all of the blessings delineated in
the following prayer we recite on Shabbos morning.
He who blessed our forefathers Avraham, Yitzchak
and Yaakov, may He bless: this entire congregation
along with all the holy congregations; them, their
wives, sons and daughters and all they have; and
those who dedicate synagogues in which to pray, and
those who come to pray, and those who give candles
for light, wine for Kiddush and Havdala, bread for
guests, charity for the poor, and all who work
faithfully for the community - May the Holy One mete
out their reward, and remove from them all illness,
and heal their bodies, and forgive their transgres-
sions, and send blessing and success in all of their
handiwork, together with all of Israel, their brethren.
As we see from the text of the blessing, anyone who
faithfully toils on behalf of the community, that all of the
listed blessings should be granted upon them along
"with all of Israel their brethren" - including their
beloved congregants.
Few couples have jointly toiled so faithfully for
the needs of any community as they have for theirs. G-d
should continue to "mete our their reward, and remove
from them all illness, and heal their bodies, and forgive
their transgressions, and send blessing and success in all
of their handiwork, together with all of Israel, their
brethren."
With gratitude for blazing a Torah inspired path.

We, too, have been recipients of the
Lazovsky kindness. Before that, I
knew Saretta as a hard-working caller
for Chevra Kadisha / J.S.S. Their
involvement in the Chicago
community is praiseworthy. Wishing
them and their children the best of
health, success and good Mazel.
