Sprint Acquires Nextel in $35 Billion Deal
12.15.2004, 10:15 AM Telecommunications giant Sprint Corp. is acquiring Nextel Communications Inc. in a $35 billion deal that would create the nation's third largest wireless telephone service provider. The widely rumored transaction, announced Wednesday, would create a company called Sprint Nextel with about $40 billion in combined yearly revenue and more than 35 million wireless subscribers, trailing only Cingular Wireless and Verizon Wireless. Sprint would get access to Nextel's 15.3 million subscribers, many of whom are business customers, and Nextel would avoid a costly upgrade of its own network. The companies estimated the merger would save them $12 billion in operating costs and network upgrades. MORE

II. Spiritual Word of the Month

“The Gift Of Family”
Read: Exodus 20:1-20 Honor your father and your mother. —Exodus 20:12 Bible In One Year: Amos 4-6; Revelation 7

Through her books and lectures, Edith Schaeffer has become much appreciated for her insights into the value of life's ordinary days. When she and her husband Francis were first married, both sets of parents lived nearby. The newlyweds divided each Sunday afternoon and evening between the Schaeffers and the Sevilles. After a few years, Edith and Francis moved to Switzerland, where they could talk with their parents only once a year in a brief phone conversation. Looking back half a century later, Edith wrote of being glad for the way they had used those Sunday afternoons. She noted that "proximity of loved ones is not an endless situation." She concluded that a package labeled "time to care for parents and exhibit love" doesn't just arrive someday. We must show love while we can. The fifth of the Ten Commandments says: "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you" (Exodus 20:12). The command to love and respect our parents applies equally to children living at home, newly independent young couples, and empty-nesters. Seize each moment you have to love and honor your family. The opportunity won't last forever. —David McCasland Putting It Into Action • Plan a regular time to call a family member. • Help an aged relative with a project or housework. • Write a letter to someone you love but cannot visit. Time is one of the greatest gifts we can give each other.

On the lower right of your computer screen you have you clock. To the left of that are many icons that make up the system tray. In there you will have icons that deal with your antivirus program, speaker volume, instant messenger software, and 3rd party software items that keep you up to date with their status. Along with those, Microsoft also has system notifications for you to adhere to if you have service pack 2 installed. Take a look at the screen shots below. If you see this circled symbol in your system tray,

At last, Real-time protection against "Pfishing" scams! We have come across a FREE toolbar plug-in for Internet Explorer that can help protect you against the increasing threat of "Pfishing" scams. Here is how it works: The toolbar resolves the actual name of the site you are on, so if you click on an email from your Bank, PayPal, or vendor, it will let you know if you are REALLY there, or on a "spoof" site. We tried this with an email we received last week:

Display when on a "Pfishing" site.

Display when on the real PayPal site.

As you can see, the toolbar correctly identified the REAL PayPal site, as well as the phony one, which was operating with just an IP address. You can download this toolbar free at:
