Actinomycetes are microorganisms that share characteristics of both fungi and bacteria. They are classified as prokaryotes due to their close affinity with Mycobacteria and the coryneforms. Extremophiles are micro organisms which thrive under extremes of temperature, pH and pressure. These micro organisms have developed numerous special adaptations to survive such extreme habitats. Nanotechnology can be defined as a research for the design, synthesis and manipulation of particles with dimension smaller than 100 nm. Nanobiotechnology represents an economic alternative for chemical and physical methods of nanoparticles formation, hence the biosynthesis of nanoparticles is an exciting recent addition of nanoparticle synthesis methods. The aim of this study is to isolate the Actinomycetes from alkaline soil and to screen the isolates for the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles. Nine different soil samples were collected in and around Vellore, serially diluted, plated on starch casein agar with pH 9 and incubated for 7 days at 27 c. Colonies were identified on the basis of their colony morphology. This study includes the synthesis of silver nano particle by using the extracellular extracts (secondary metabolites) which will act as a bioreduction agent for the synthesis of silver nano particles from silver nitrate which shows color changes from white to yellowish brown which shows the synthesis of nanoparticle, as silver reduction shows color change. The synthesized nanoparticles are characterized by using UV-Spectrophotometer, particle size analyzer, FTIR. The result shows the synthesis of silver nanoparticle was good, stable and non toxic. With the advancement of silver nanoparticle with wide range of application like drug delivery, dental encapsulation, and antimicrobial drug, this method is reliable and rapid process for the synthesis of nanosized materials.
